How to properly photograph a child on his/her international passport in 2021

When do you need to take a photo of a child for a passport?

It all depends on what kind of passport you need - a 10-year biometric one or a regular one, valid for 5 years. Are there any advantages to a biometric passport? I wrote here.

5 year passport

Suppose you decide to make a regular passport (here, by the way, are detailed instructions). To do this, you do not need to photograph the child at the Federal Migration Service, only in a regular photo studio.

Not all photo studios will take a photo of a child for a foreign passport; it is better to find out in advance that this is possible, and only then go there with the child.

In a photo studio it is easy to photograph any child, even the smallest, even one who cannot yet hold his head. The baby will be photographed directly in your arms, then the necessary background will be made in Photoshop, and the “unnecessary”, that is, your hands, will be “cut off”.

In fact, you don’t have to carry the child anywhere at all if you have a normal quality photograph where the child is looking more or less straight. We did this for a Schengen visa, we simply brought our photograph to a photo studio, where they changed the background for us and took a photo of the required size and proportions.

For a regular passport, a photo from the studio will be enough. They are used for both the application form and the passport.

. This means that the child does not need to be brought with him to the Federal Migration Service; the application is submitted by the parent as a legal representative.

Biometric passport

If you are making a biometric passport (all the details of the process are described in this article), then you need to photograph the baby twice. At the photo studio for the application form for the international passport and at the FMS for the international passport itself.

Photo of a child for a foreign passport in 2021 - general requirements and recommendations

Many Russians today go on vacation with small children, which raises the question of the need to prepare international passports for them. Let's look at the features of a child's passport photo. From the presented material you will learn about the requirements for the image, where to go and whether it is possible to do it yourself.

At what age does a child need a passport?

The legislation does not contain the concept of a foreign document for a minor. Russians are divided into three groups, for which different rules for photographing apply:

  • up to 14 years old;
  • from 14 to adulthood;
  • over 18.

To the question of how many years a foreign passport is issued in Russia, the answer is as follows: from the moment the birth certificate is issued. Parents prefer to include a minor in the old format document. This is convenient because small children change quickly and there may be inconsistencies with the face in the photograph, which will create problems at customs. The negative point is that the child will not be able to travel without being accompanied by his mother or father, whose foreign document contains information about him. However, in a biometric passport there is no opportunity to make an entry about a child.

Usually, for minor Russians, parents prefer to draw up a document in the old format for 5 years. This is due to a change in appearance. No one will recognize a five-year-old toddler in a ten-year-old child, and at the age of 14, you will still have to change your passport. In addition, such a document is cheaper than a biometric one.

General photo requirements

One of the items on the list of papers required to obtain any identity card is a photograph of the applicant. Since it will identify a citizen, it is important that it complies with the basic rules. Let's list the requirements that apply in 2021 to a child's photo for an old-style international passport:

  • the picture is taken on a white, blue or beige background;
  • the face occupies 70-80% of the total image area;
  • the presence of a hat, scarf, or sunglasses is excluded;
  • if corrective optical aids are prescribed to a minor, the photograph is taken with glasses;
  • passport photo size for a child under 14 years old – 35 x 45 mm;
  • Only clear images in color or black and white are accepted.
  • 4 photos are provided.

All of the above requirements are well known to the employees of the studio where you can photograph a child for a foreign passport. When shooting on your own, follow the guidelines below.

What is unacceptable

Many parents are interested in what to do if the child in the passport photo does not look like himself? This is a completely common situation, since during the validity of the document of the old format, which is 5 years, the face of the minor undergoes significant changes. Border guards have special knowledge and are able to identify a person based on anthropological characteristics:

  • skull shape;
  • ears;
  • moles, eyebrows, scars;
  • shape of the nose, cheekbones.

However, this takes a long time, sometimes you have to wait hours for the result. In order not to be afraid every time you travel abroad, when the child’s photo in the international passport is out of date, it is better to replace this document in a timely manner.

Recommendations for self-shooting

Often parents prefer to take pictures without the participation of specialists, this allows them to save money. This is only allowed if you have a high-resolution camera. It is important to organize a light, even background, for which you can use a sheet of whatman paper. Lighting should be natural, as a lamp from the side or above will create a shadow on the face.

In order for the image to meet the requirements, the camera should be mounted on a tripod at a distance of 2-3 meters from the child’s head. The resulting image must be transferred to a computer, where, using the appropriate program, the background, size, and sharpness of the image can be edited. Then print it out on special paper. Citizens are especially interested in how newborns are photographed for their international passports. More on this below.

How to take a baby photo

If the MFC or migration structure has the technical capabilities, the procedure can be carried out directly there. It is necessary to have special devices with which the head is fixed in a certain position. However, the problem arises: how to take a photo of a baby for a foreign passport, when there are dozens of nervous citizens outside the door waiting for their turn?

Therefore, it is more convenient to carry out the procedure in a photo salon. But even there it is not always possible to find a professional who has the skills to work with newborns. The most difficult thing is to catch the moment when the baby is looking straight ahead and at the same time you need to support his head. It is important that the hand or other parts of the mother or father’s body are not included in the frame. Therefore, before going to the salon, it is better to call there in advance and find out if they have specialists and equipment for photographing infants.

Many parents wonder if it is possible to take a photo at home? If you follow all the described rules and requirements for the image, this is not prohibited. But you will almost certainly not be able to take into account all the conditions and take a high-quality photo; this will only delay the process of obtaining a foreign document.

Biometric passport photo

When submitting an application for this type of identity card directly to the migration structure of the Main Directorate for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or through a multifunctional center, you do not need to take a photo first. When receiving a set of papers, an authorized person will perform this procedure directly on site using special equipment.

If the application is submitted through State Services, then the requirements for the downloaded file are as follows:

  • use JPEG format;
  • image resolution of at least 450 dpi;
  • depth – 24 bits for color, 8 bits – for black and white photos;
  • volume up to 30 KB.

When scanning the finished image, you will need a clear, high-quality photograph in passport format 3.5 x 4.5 cm in color or black and white.

Many parents are interested in whether it is necessary to paste a photo of the child into the foreign passport of the mother or father? There is no such option in a biometric document; it is quick and easy to do with an old-format ID.

For a regular passport

The requirements for images of children are identical to those for images of adults described earlier. The size of the photo for an old-style international passport for a child under 14 years of age is the same as for citizens of a different age category - 35 x 45 mm. Prepare 4 high quality photographs. There should be no bends, stains or abrasions on them. To prevent clothes from blending into a light background, choose dark colors.

You can paste a photo of the child into the parent documents of the old format, then there is no need to issue a foreign passport for the minor. You cannot make changes yourself. Submit an application to the Main Department of Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at your place of residence, confirm payment of the state fee, attach two photographs and the child’s birth certificate.

Is it possible to take a photo online

On the Internet today it is easy to find many services with a similar function. The ability to take a photo is available using a webcam or other equipment connected to a computer. To do this, you will need to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.

But images taken in this way do not always come out of the required quality. On mid-priced laptops, the built-in webcams do not allow you to take a suitable photo. Therefore, receiving an image online is only available to those users who have an external device with high resolution.

If you fit this description and have received an image on the screen, the question arises: “How to crop a photo for a foreign passport?” To do this, you can use any of the free online editors. Select the cropping tool and enter the parameters for width – 35 mm and height – 45 mm. In addition, you can remove the “red eye” effect, increase clarity and saturation. Save the corrected photo in a JPEG file.

Results

Parents can issue a foreign identity card for a child from the moment they receive the paper from the registry office confirming the birth of the baby. A photograph is required for such a document. Since the appearance of children is constantly undergoing changes, an old-style ID card is ordered for them, valid for 5 years. The requirements for photographs of minors are no different from those for photographs of adults.

You can paste an image of a child under 14 years old into the document of the mother or father if the passport is of an old format. Many citizens are interested in whether grandparents have the right to this? The answer will be negative, since the law allows to paste photos of children into the foreign passports of parents and official guardians. The presence of minors at this procedure is not required.

How to take a photograph of an infant for a passport at the Federal Migration Service

An inspector at the FMS is an important and scary person. He has a responsible job and has no time

.
And he doesn’t care who is in front of him - a two-month-old girl or a fifty-year-old man
. But the FMS does not have special equipment to photograph children.

So the instructions sound something like this:

“We take a stool out of the booth, you, dad, lie down on the floor, instead of a stool, so that you are not visible and hold the child, and you, mom, make sure that the child looks directly at the camera.”

“The child must keep his head straight! Don't let it tip over! You have to look straight into the camera!”

“What if she’s two months old and doesn’t hold her head yet?”

So, you already understand what the problem is.

First, everyone is in a hurry. The queue is breathing down your neck and everyone is nervous

. In our case, it happened in the summer, the door to the office was open, and therefore we had about 30 spectators.

Second, the child is photographed using the same equipment as everyone else. This is a booth, you need to look at a clearly marked point, keep your head straight, don’t tilt it anywhere, etc.

If you take a photo of a child for a passport at the Federal Migration Service, please note that the booth is small and it can be very stuffy in it. This may cause discomfort for the child.

And don’t forget to close the door in front of curious spectators if it suddenly opens. Focus, don't worry, try once, and try again, everything will work out.

Blow on the child, wave a newspaper - in our case it helped. And also, when we realized that we had finally managed to hold our head up and the child seemed to be looking in the right direction, we had to heart-rendingly shout to the inspector: “Come on, hurry up, take pictures faster,” because she decided that it was already possible to relax, because nothing was wrong does not work.

That is, you need to mobilize the forces of everyone: yours, the child and the inspector. And then you will get the result - first, a photo of the child for a foreign passport, and then the long-awaited document itself:

It is clear that the older the child, the easier it is. Does he hold his head? Already good. Maybe sit? Generally excellent

. The chances of quick success increase many times over.

And also, even if you are used to usually dealing with your baby alone, still ask someone to go with you to the Federal Migration Service and help.

What to do if you can’t take a photo

In the event that suddenly it doesn’t work at all, although I have no doubt about the resourcefulness of people who plan to travel with a baby, you can make a regular passport, not a biometric one (instructions). There are enough photos from the studio.

Sometimes the FMS posts notices that they don’t have old passport forms. Never mind. We also saw such an ad.

And when it seemed that it wouldn’t work out at all, the inspector said to go to their boss so that they could give him such a form. That is, you understand, as long as 5-year passports are issued, such an opportunity will exist.

What to do if it doesn’t work out

In the event that a photo card cannot be produced in specialized authorities, the easiest way would be to think about issuing a classic foreign passport. For him, a photograph can be taken at home without any problems.

It is important to remember that quite often the FMS departments post a notice about the absence of forms for the production of the old sample. Most likely this is not the case.

Quite often, authorized inspectors refer interested citizens to higher authorities to obtain a passport form.

The head of the territorial department of the FMS will definitely be able to take care of obtaining such a document. That is why, until the legal force of passports is actually removed at the legislative level, the possibility of obtaining old certificates, the validity of which is only 5 years, remains.

To get a passport for a child under 14 years old, you will need to take a photo of him. This task is not as simple as it seems at first glance.

How to take a photo of a child so that it fits a foreign passport, meets all the specified requirements and does not have to be redone later is a very important question. After all, sometimes there is little time to complete documents, and if the deadlines are missed, your trip risks being disrupted.

What should a child's photo be like for a passport?

Main settings

The requirements for children's photos are no less strict than for photos of adults. Here are the main ones:

  • dimensions – 45x35 mm, distance from the top line of the head to the edge – no more than 5 mm, the face should occupy from 30 to 35 mm;
  • matte paper;
  • plain clothes (not necessary, but desirable);
  • the child must look at the camera.

You can also add that oval shading is only needed if you need to paste a photo of the child into your own document - it is not needed for an independent child’s passport.

If everything is more or less clear with the first points of the requirements, then the last one causes serious difficulties, especially if we are talking about a very small child.

How to take a photo of an infant for a foreign passport without him fidgeting and looking away is the question that first arises for parents who are planning to take their baby on a trip abroad.

How to photograph a baby?

First of all, you should call the photo studio closest to your home and find out if they take photos of the child for a foreign passport. It is very important that you do not have to travel too far - if the baby is tired and cranky, it will be much more difficult for you to attract his attention so that he looks directly at the camera.

It is especially difficult if the child has not yet learned to hold his head up - the requirements for documents do not provide discounts for infants. Some studios have special equipment that allows you to photograph a newborn for a passport without any problems.

The atelier also provides retouching services for amateur photographs - if you have a good quality full-face photograph of a child, you can simply change the background on it and “cut off” everything unnecessary. This greatly simplifies the task - you don’t have to drag the little one anywhere.

Examples of a child's passport photo

But edited photos are only suitable for a regular passport, valid for five years. If you are going to get a biometric (ten-year) passport, the requirements change - for the application form you can take a photo of the child in the studio, but the photo for the passport itself must be taken at the Federal Migration Service

. And here certain difficulties arise.

Requirements for the design of photographs for an old-style international passport

Registration of an old-style international passport costs less than a biometric one. To receive it, you need to print and fill out 2 copies of the application, attach a receipt for payment of the state fee, a package of documents and photographs.

The instructions require a photo with the following parameters:

  • color or black and white image;
  • white or light gray uniform background;
  • the face is strictly frontal;
  • sharp image;
  • lack of headdress;
  • proportions: head 2.5-3.5 cm in height, the field above it is no wider than 5-6 mm;
  • From below, the image is shaded in the shape of a semi-oval (photos without a shaded semi-oval are now suitable);
  • Printed on matte photo paper.

Head tilting is not allowed; the face in the 5-year passport photo must be evenly illuminated.

What awaits you at FMS

Firstly, a child at the Federal Migration Service is photographed in the same booth as adults, that is, there are no devices in it so that you can hold him without getting caught in the camera.

Secondly, in this booth the baby may feel stuffy and scared, and if the child is unhappy, it is unlikely to be able to persuade him to sit still for at least a few seconds, while looking straight ahead.

Thirdly, in general, there is no time for persuasion - there are usually a lot of people at the FMS, that is, you will be rushed by both the citizens waiting for their turn and the inspector. The situation is quite tense.

However, there are no problems without solutions. Try to first consult with friends who have already gone through this and can explain to you how to photograph your child for documents without creating a jam and without fraying the nerves of yourself, the child and those around you. Remember what you usually do to attract your child’s attention and make him look at a certain point

. There can be many options:

  • talk to your child;
  • blow or wave at it - sometimes it helps;
  • use your favorite toy that sounds better - a squeaker, rattle, etc.

The main thing is to behave calmly, do not raise your voice under any circumstances, do not get irritated or fall into despair. The fact that children pick up on our moods very easily, especially in unfamiliar and frightening environments, needs no proof.

It goes without saying that carrying out all these maneuvers implies the presence of both parents - one holds the child, the second performs the duties of a “mass entertainer”.

What if you didn’t manage to take a photo?

If all these recommendations did not help, you still shouldn’t despair - you should just get a regular passport. The FMS should have forms of these passports

. If you are told that there are no forms, it makes sense to contact the management.

It is clear that with older children all the problems described above will not arise - when the child is of a conscious age, it is easier to explain to him how to sit and where to look.

And lastly, in any case, it is wiser to prepare ahead of time not one photo of the child for a foreign passport, but two or even three. Even when receiving a regular passport, if the photo turns out to be inappropriate, it would be better to submit a spare one rather than running around at the last moment in search of a studio.

Number of shots

When applying in person for an old-style passport, a minor will need 4 photographs (how to apply for an old-style or new-style international passport for a child is described here). When applying in person to the department of the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to obtain a new type of international passport, you do not need to provide a photograph, because

. because it is done directly in the department by a trained specialist.

When sending an application electronically for any type of foreign passport, you will need to upload 1 photo of the child in electronic format (or a scanned paper photo).

When to take photos

Photos for a foreign passport are required for both adult citizens and children. If a minor requires his own document, he will be photographed. The old version of a foreign passport provides for pasting photographs of the owner’s children. A biometric passport does not provide this opportunity. When visiting the migration department of the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, you should clarify the list of documents for obtaining a foreign passport and the size of the photo for an old-style international passport for a child under 14 years old, if necessary.

Old style international passport

An old sample of a foreign passport allows its owner to enter information about his own children into it. You will need a photograph of the minor. This photo is taken in a photo studio. In this case, you should clarify in advance the list of studios that provide such services. You can take a photograph yourself, subject to the requirements for it.

You can add your child to your passport by pasting his photo and writing down the data. In addition, 2 photos will be needed to paste into the application form for traveling abroad. The presence of the child himself during the procedure for obtaining a foreign certificate is not necessary. The questionnaire is submitted by the legal representative of the minor. An individual foreigner also requires the submission of a separate photograph. In total, 4 photographs must be submitted to obtain a child’s foreign passport.

Biometric

Before taking a photo of your child for a passport, it is important to find out the entire list of requirements. Many migration offices do not require photographs to be included in the biometric passport. They have equipment with which the required photographs are taken on site.

You are allowed to bring a separate photo for the application form. If the photograph is taken at the department, it is printed for the application form. If documents for a child’s passport are submitted online, it is important to submit photographs in advance for the application form. The requirements are indicated on the State Services portal.

A photograph for a biometric document must meet generally accepted European standards. This is an additional way to check for accuracy. In each image, the distance between the pupils is read. This approach allows you to avoid mistakes and violations. A person will not be able to use the foreign passport of another citizen similar to him.

The photo is applied to a new international passport using a laser. A paper sample is pasted onto the form. To apply, you must submit 2 photographs of the minor.

The photo size for the biometric option remains 35*45mm. The child must be calm. The background of the photograph should be light. Black and white and color images are accepted. The face should be pointed directly at the camera. The child should not have any foreign objects. There should be no third parties in the photo. Hats and tinted glasses are also not allowed.

Children's passport: Video

Format, size

  • Photo width – 35 mm, height – 45 mm.
  • The baby's head should occupy between 29 mm and 34 mm in the image.
  • The distance from the top edge to the head should be 3 - 5 mm. Circumcision of the crown of the head is not permitted.
  • An oval shading for a child's photo is needed only if it is pasted into the parent's passport. It is not included in the independent children's foreign document.
  • When uploading a photo to the site, the following formats are allowed: JPEG; JPG; PNG; BMP.
  • The photo size should not exceed 5 MB, but not less than 10 KB.
  • The resolution of the uploaded image must not be less than 300 dpi (dots per inch).

Photo requirements

The size of the picture is 3.5 by 4.5 cm. The difficulty of photographing children is that a calm child must be photographed. Achieving such an effect is problematic. Therefore, you will need to prepare. It is better to visit a photo studio with an assistant who will distract the minor. The photo is taken against a light background. You cannot turn your gaze to the side. You need to look straight into the camera. There should be no foreign objects or third parties in the frame.

Are common

The requirements for a passport photo for a child are similar to the standards that a photo of an adult must meet. Rules are established in order to simplify citizen identification.

NormExplanation
BackgroundShould be light. Typically used beige, white or blue.
Number of shots2-4. Depends on the type of passport being produced.
Presence of accessoriesSunglasses, scarves, headscarves, etc. are not permitted. The exception is hats worn for religious reasons. If a minor wears glasses for vision correction, the photo will be taken with them on.
Size3.5 by 4.5 cm.
Photo colorColor or b/w images are acceptable.
Face sizeIt should occupy about 70% of the total area of the image.

Number of shots

The number of photos depends on the type of passport required. The old type ID card will require 4 photographs. For a biometric passport, 2 photos are enough. However, the child will have to undergo additional filming at the migration service. This is done at the time of application. Online applications require uploading 1 electronic photo. Scanning a paper photograph is acceptable.

Format, size

The standard photo size for new and old passport samples is 3.5x4.5 cm. However, requirements are also imposed on the image itself. Thus, the size of a minor’s head should occupy about 2.9-3.4 cm of the total area. The image of the person being photographed must not touch the top edge of the photograph. You need to retreat 3-5 mm. Circumcision of the crown of the head is unacceptable.

If you need to paste a photo of a child into a passport, oval shading is acceptable. When a snapshot is taken for an individual document, her presence is not allowed. Requirements are also established for the photo uploaded to the online resource for submitting an application. The system will accept an image made in one of the following formats:

  • JPEG;
  • JPG;
  • PNG;
  • BMP.

The image weight ranges from 10 KB to 5 MB. The sides of the image should not be less than 300 pixels.

What is unacceptable for a photo?

No other persons should be present in the photograph. The presence of toys, hats, and dark glasses is prohibited. The shooting is carried out without outer clothing. If a parent picks up a child for a photograph, it should not be noticeable. Putting another person in the frame will render the photo unusable.

General requirements

There are general rules for taking pictures that should be followed:

  1. When choosing clothes for a child to be photographed in, you should give preference to plain everyday clothes that the child (teenager) will feel comfortable in.
  2. Since the background is recommended to use light shades (white, light gray, light blue), the clothes should not blend together.
  3. Nothing extraneous should be included in the frame (neither parents supporting the child, nor toys).
  4. The child must look straight into the camera lens.
  5. The head should be level, not thrown back, not tilted.
  6. The lips are closed and the eyes are open.
  7. The hair is pulled back so as not to hide the features and oval of the face. Taking pictures with your hair down is not prohibited if it meets the requirements above.
  8. Hats are removed. A photo with a headdress is permissible only for religious reasons, when a person’s faith does not allow him to be without a covered head.
  9. If your child always wears glasses, you can leave them on when taking photographs. Then you need to make sure that the frame does not hide the outlines of the eyes, and the glass of the glasses does not give glare.
  10. Hair color, eye color and skin tone must match the real ones.

Important! It is necessary to check the colors of the frames received during printing. Red eye is strictly prohibited.

What should the pictures be like?

There are requirements for image proportions:

  • The height of the photo is 4.5 cm.
  • Photo width – 3.5 cm.
  • Color or black and white printing.
  • Matte paper.
  • Natural colors, no photo filters.
  • Minimum 2mm from the top edge of the photo to the top of the head.
  • The face occupies at least 2.9 cm of the entire photograph.

It is also important how exactly the newborn is captured in the picture:

  1. The head and shoulders are level. Without bending, in a full-face position.
  2. Eyes open.
  3. The mouth is closed, lips are closed.
  4. Minimum ruffles and frills on clothes.
  5. No hat or bonnet.
  6. No shadows on the face.
  7. The oval of the face and ears are clearly captured.
  8. There is no red-eye effect.
  9. Only one child is photographed.
  10. There are no foreign objects in the background.
  11. The background is light and monochromatic.

How to get good pictures of children?

For an old-style foreign document, it is enough to have a good quality photograph of the child, where he is more or less directly looking at the camera. In a photo studio (or independently), the background will be replaced with white (gray).

The parent can also dress in white clothes and hold the baby in their arms. And then carry out the same manipulation in the editor - replace the background.

For photographing a new type of passport, replacing the background is not relevant , since the process takes place in real time

. Therefore, if the child already knows how to sit independently, then the parent can stand behind the photographer and attract the child’s attention with a rattle, then the pictures will come out quite successfully. The baby looks straight into the frame.

If the child does not yet know how to sit (hold his head), then it is better for the parents to go together to the department of the Main Department of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs: father or mother holds the baby in his arms (supports him) so that he himself is not visible in the frame, and the second parent blows on the baby or waving a rattle. The main thing is that the child looks into the frame and does not cry.

Sometimes a photo may not be taken at the Main Department of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Then it’s easier to give your child an old-style international passport.

With preschool children, it is better to discuss the upcoming procedure in advance . You can play “Photo Studio” at home, perhaps give your child a real camera and show your example how to behave, how not to behave, and why.

Attention! Children are most afraid of the unknown. If the baby knows why and where he is going, then his calm behavior is more likely.

It is much easier to come to an agreement with school-age and teenage children - as a rule, the trip abroad itself is an incentive for all manipulations.

Practical recommendations for parents

Let’s look at the main points that allow parents of an infant to take good photos for their child’s foreign document:

  1. Place the baby on a white diaper and attract his attention with a bright toy or rattle.

  2. You can blow into the child’s face so that he “freezes” for a while and opens his eyes.

Parents can enter their newborn child into their old-style international passport. But for this you need to paste a photo of the baby. Or you can prepare a full-fledged document for your child. With this option, you also need to prepare photographs of the baby.

  2. if a biometric document is produced, the photograph is taken by a specialist from the migration service right when submitting the application.
