Employment of CIS citizens in Germany in 2021: vacancies, conditions, salaries

In an effort to improve their lives as best as possible, many migrants choose countries with a stable economic and political situation, a high standard of living and social security. It is for this reason that working in Germany for CIS citizens in 2021 is not just a way to make good money, but also an opportunity to settle here for a long time. At the same time, many of them forget that in the German labor market they will have to face high competition due to tougher legislation against the backdrop of an aggravated migration crisis.

Why do foreigners choose Germany to work?

The flow of citizens from abroad who want to find work and stay in Germany, if not forever, then for a long time, is not decreasing. Top-category specialists, workers, service personnel, and even those who hope for casual income come here. Of course, those whose resumes attract interest from leading companies, as well as foreigners who are not afraid of “menial” work, have a greater chance of getting hired.

But why Germany? The following factors speak in favor of choosing this country:

  • one of the highest standards of living in the world community;
  • provision of citizens with social protection from the state;
  • high wages;
  • the opportunity to obtain resident status after 5 years of legal residence in the country;
  • for businessmen – investment attractiveness provided by a stable economy;
  • absence of corruption component;
  • large selection of vacancies;
  • proximity to other European countries.

However, migrant workers should not ignore the many difficulties that come with legal work. This includes the need to learn German, high taxes, and significant competition. As for the latter, Germany is an attractive country not only for Russians, Moldovans, Belarusians and other citizens of the CIS, but also for Poles, Turks and representatives of many other nationalities.

Employment process for residents of CIS countries

Employment in Germany for residents of the CIS countries consists of successive steps. The process looks something like this:

  1. Search for a vacancy.
  2. Sending a resume, contacting an employer.
  3. Clarification of all the nuances.
  4. Confirmation of employment.
  5. Signing of the contract (Arbeitsvertrag).
  6. Collection of documents and their submission for a work visa D.
  7. Obtaining a visa.
  8. Moving to Germany and actually going to work.
  9. Obtaining a residence permit based on employment.

It is possible to move to another country! Now it is easy to obtain a residence permit, permanent residence and even citizenship of another state. Any migration issues can be resolved with international law lawyers. There are those who deal with migration issues. Their consultation is free!

To work, a national visa type D is required. To obtain it, you must provide the following documents to the German consulate:

  • application form filled out in German (2 copies);
  • civil and international passport;
  • employment contract (if any);
  • diploma or other educational documents translated into German and endorsed by a notary;
  • work book;
  • medical insurance (at least 14 days of stay in Germany);
  • payment of the visa fee;
  • photo 35x45 mm (3 pieces).

The package must consist of original copies (2 pieces of each document). A work visa is valid for 3 months. During this period, it is necessary to request a residence permit, valid for the entire period of the contract. For an open-ended contract, the visa is issued for 2 years and then extended.

Working in Germany on a tourist or visitor visa is considered an illegal activity. The same rule applies to employment with a biometric passport, which allows you to enter the country without a visa. In the absence of a D visa, foreigners are deported from the Schengen zone and are prohibited from entering for 5 years.

A foreigner can also apply for a Blue Card if he meets the following requirements:

  • has a confirmed diploma;
  • entered into an employment contract with a German employer;
  • annual salary is more than €56,800;
  • The vacancy fully corresponds to the acquired specialty.

The Blue Card is valid for 4 years and allows you to issue travel documents for all family members.

In the case where there are no options from the employer, immigrants from the CIS can apply for a visa intended to search for work in Germany. Then the consulate is provided with:

  • application form filled out in German;
  • civil and international passport;
  • a free letter justifying the job search;
  • educational documents;
  • summary;
  • health insurance;
  • financial confirmation (bank certificate or letter from the sponsor).

This type of visa is valid for 18 months.

What kind of work can CIS citizens expect?

For hardworking residents of Russia, citizens of Tajikistan and other once fraternal republics who have work experience and appropriate education behind them, a job will be found in Germany at any time. Reviews from those who have already walked this path indicate that if you have the desire, the right goal and perseverance, you can get a very good offer.

The highest chances of successfully finding employment are among technical specialists, such as engineers, designers and other so-called techies. Almost unclaimed in their countries, they are of great interest to German industrial enterprises.

However, the most popular vacancies on the German labor market today are:

  • in the field of medicine: nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists, junior paramedics, specialized specialists;
  • in transport: mechanics, truckers, drivers;
  • in construction: plumbers, laborers, masons, electricians;
  • in the service sector: nannies, housekeepers, caregivers (this category has the opportunity to get a place with accommodation);
  • HORECA: cleaners, dishwashers, maids, waiters, cooks, administrators.

As for IT specialists, it should be kept in mind that Germany is not the easiest option for them. Only truly talented programmers are valued here, and to find a company that needs such a worker, you will have to make serious efforts.

Ways to find a job

Foreign applicants can get a job legally or illegally. The first method is more complicated, but it provides the migrant with a position almost equivalent to a resident of the country. In this case, you can enjoy most of the benefits, receive a decent salary and live in peace without fear of deportation.

There are several ways to find such a job. However, it is impossible to say exactly which one will work. Sometimes the desired result is achieved with a combined approach to solving this issue. So each migrant has to go through his own thorny path.

Independent search

Finding a job yourself is a completely feasible task for Kazakhs, Russians, and Ukrainians. The first thing you need to do is look at the website of the German Employment Center - jobboerse.arbeitsagentur.de. A big bonus for applicants is the availability of Russian and English versions of the portal. Here you can find vacancies both by industry and in specific companies.

Websites that specialize in this issue will also require daily viewing:

  • experteer.de – suitable for job seekers who want to get a highly qualified job with a salary of 60 thousand euros per year.
  • jobleads.de – more than 30 thousand employers post their offers here. On the site you can find jobs with salaries ranging from 50 to 250 thousand euros per year.
  • de.dice.com is a portal for those looking for jobs in IT specialties.
  • studentjob.de – help in finding employment for students.

Groups on social networks can be a good option for finding a job without intermediaries. Here you can get thousands of practical tips regarding employment in the state you are interested in. It will not be in vain to send information about yourself to potential employers, as well as study advertisements in newspapers, including electronic ones.

Finding a job through intermediaries

The majority of job seekers prefer to delegate the resolution of issues related to the search for a vacant position to recruitment agencies. This method can be considered effective, but only in combination with those listed above. Preference should be given to the following companies:

  • Premium Job, GmbH – located in Hannover. Works with the largest employers in Germany and EU countries. Provides employment assistance to citizens of different countries, including the CIS;
  • UnionWorkUGFurth – city of Nuremberg. Helps find unskilled vacancies. Those interested in shift work should take a look here.
  • Agentur für Arbeit – located in Berlin. Helps to find vacancies in all areas.

When contacting such bureaus, you should take into account that their services are paid for both Poles and Russians or Kyrgyzstanis.

How to find work in Germany from direct employers?

By direct employer we will mean legal entities in Germany with whom the foreigner will enter into an employment contract. That is, we will not consider options for outsourcing, working in Germany on a Van der Elst visa, etc.

There can be many ways to find a job in Germany, including combined ones, but several of them can be considered the main ones.

"Quick check"

This method can hardly be called a direct search for a specific vacancy, but the method is convenient for those who are just starting to look for options.

The method is provided by the Federal Government. The point is in a few steps:

  1. Visit the Make it in Germany website.
  2. Find the "Quick-Check" section.
  3. Click "Start Quick Control".
  4. Select a language (en, de, fr, es).
  5. Select the appropriate options and you will be redirected to the next ones. For example, “work - other countries - education, etc.”
  6. Upon completion of data entry, the system will offer possible employment options.
  7. Click on the links of the options you like.

Unfortunately, the site design does not look very clear on some devices. But the functionality remains the same on all devices we tested: desktop, tablet, smartphone.

Websites of employers (companies)

The method is convenient when searching for a specific industry. Through any search engine you can find websites of specialized organizations, and in the vacancies section you can select the position you are interested in.

Next, contact with a potential employer is carried out, details are clarified and documents are prepared for issuing a visa.

Advantages:

  • Direct communication with the employer, which will allow you to discuss all the details in advance.
  • Accurate information about the location and specifics of the work.
  • Opportunity to preview the contract, colleagues and other details.

Flaws:

  • It is not always indicated that a vacancy is suitable for a foreigner.
  • Obtaining confirmation from the Employment Agency that a foreigner can work (if the employer did not do this knowingly or the profession is not on the Ministry’s White List).

Our advice : if the employment of foreigners is not indicated immediately, this issue should be clarified at the first contact with a potential employer, so as not to waste time on unsuitable vacancies.

Federal Labor Exchange

Applicants for professions on the White List can conveniently use the Bundesagentur für Arbeit website. This is the Federal Labor Exchange from the Employment Agency we already know.

Approximate sequence of actions:

  1. Go to this site.
  2. Enter or select options in German:
      Sie suchen – area of activity (managers, specialists, assistants, etc.).
  3. Suchbegriff(e) – search keyword(s). You can enter a profession, and up to 3 at the same time.
  4. Arbeitsort – place of work (geography). You can leave the field blank.
  5. Click "Suchen".
  6. A list of vacancies will open.
  7. Each is a link to a full description.

Next is the standard procedure for obtaining contacts, contacting the employer and completing the necessary documents.

Disadvantages of the method:

  • The list is limited to positions from Positivliste.
  • Not all employers and not all states participate in the job exchange.

Advantages:

  • Operational search.
  • Wide range of professions.
  • Vacancies provided for foreigners do not require additional approval from the Bundesagentur für Arbeit.

For a more comprehensive search, you can use private labor exchanges and/or job search sites in Germany. Let's move on to them.

Job search sites

Here the selection technologies are standard: search conditions are set and vacancies are selected. We will not dwell on this in detail, but will focus on the diversity of the resources themselves.

Let's review job search sites in Germany in the form of a table:

Please note that some resources may not open from IPs of CIS countries. To enter them, use anonymizers, VPN services or similar methods.

All of the listed resources are labor exchanges, i.e. They allow you not only to view available vacancies, but also to post your own resume. There are also “one-way” service sites (vacancy aggregators), i.e. They only allow you to view job offers, but they also collect information from several different sources:

  • adzuna.de;
  • careerjet.de;
  • jobworld.de;
  • jobscanner.de;
  • jobanzeigen.de.

What do you need to get a job?

For a citizen of Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Russia or another former Soviet republic, the key to successfully finding an interesting vacancy will be having an education. But in order for a German company to hire you, you need to confirm your diploma. You can check whether your diploma is valid in Germany on a special portal - anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html.

The site's database contains information about all educational institutions in the world and indicates whether the diplomas they issue correspond to German ones. In the event of a discrepancy due to differences in the education systems of different countries, many specialists will have to undergo additional training and pass an exam. Only after this they will be able to begin work.

Another component of success is knowledge of German or, in extreme cases, English. A polyglot's chances of getting an interesting position with good pay increase several times.

Proof of proficiency in German at the proper level is a certificate of passing the exam. Without knowledge of the language, you can only count on unqualified vacancies.

However, finding a job is only half the battle. It is also important to obtain a visa that will allow you to cross the German border and stay in the country for an extended period. For these purposes, a national visa (category D) is requested at the consulate, or rather, one of its varieties is a work visa. To receive the latter, you must provide an invitation from your employer.

If a job has not yet been found, you are allowed to enter the country with a special permit, which allows you to live in Germany for six months and search for a vacant position. An important document for obtaining such a permit is confirmation of the financial ability to stay in Germany for the permitted time.

Whatever your planned employment - contract work (seasonal) or long-term contract - you must provide confirmation of your relationship with the German company to the consulate along with other documents. Based on these documents, a decision will be made to grant you the right to stay in the country.

Initially, the visa is issued for a period of 3 months. Immediately upon arrival in Germany, the employee can apply for a residence permit until the end of the employment contract. If the relationship with the employer is not limited by time, then a two-year visa will be issued. It should be borne in mind that the migrant will not be able to change his place of work for three years. After 5 years, you can apply for permanent residence.

The situation is different for Blue Card holders. They have the opportunity to change employers, and they can receive permanent residence in 2 years. This document is issued to specialists of the highest category. At the same time, their relatives have the opportunity to legalize together with them according to a simplified scheme.

Didn't find a job? Special visa for job search

This is an interesting tool for Ukrainians, Russians and Belarusians. If you have certain skills/education, you can obtain a visa for the purpose of employment (job search).

It is issued for several months (usually from 3 to 6) and does not allow you to work . However, if an employer is found and the employment is properly formalized, the foreigner has the right to apply with documents to the Ausländeramt to obtain a residence permit with the right to work .

Payroll and taxes

Official work is a guarantee of salary for the employee and tax payments for the country. Germany occupies a leading position in the ranking of citizens' incomes. The official minimum wage here is fixed at 8.5 euros per hour. For a working day of 8 hours, the employee receives 68 euros per day and 1,360 euros per month (minimum salary).

The average wage in Germany is not regulated at the legislative level. It depends on the industry, the region in which the enterprise is located and its capabilities. For this reason, before sending a letter of motivation, it is necessary to monitor salaries in federal states and cities.

Today, the average salary in the country is 3,500 euros per month. At the same time, the highest rates are in the banking sector, medicine and the automotive industry.

However, it should be borne in mind that the indicated amount is salary before taxes, the total of which can reach 30% of income. This means that the employee will receive about 2,500 euros in net form.

Cost of living in Germany

The attractiveness of the German state is ensured by the government's tireless concern for the well-being of citizens, who, in turn, consider it their duty to comply with laws and maintain order in society. This explains the rather low crime rate and the almost complete absence of corruption.

The main issue that concerns most visitors is housing. It’s worth noting right away that real estate here is quite expensive. At the same time, the highest rents were recorded in Stuttgart, Munich and Frankfurt: 800-900 euros per month for a one-room studio apartment. To this amount you also need to add the cost of utility bills - approximately 90-200 euros (depending on the area).

An unprepared foreigner may also be shocked by food prices. However, do not forget that in Germany there are supermarkets that stock cheap domestic brands, so a basket of essential food will cost an order of magnitude cheaper than in other European countries. The cost of some product items is given in the table:

ProductPrice in euros
Drinking water 1.5 l0,4
Milk 1 l0,69
Cheese 1 kg7,35
Eggs 10 pieces1,60
Sugar 1 kg0,90
Pasta 1 kg0,65

In general, food costs per person about 300 euros per month. If you add here another 70 euros for travel on public transport, 26 euros for the Internet and 30 euros for paying for] mobile operators[/anchor], then together with the cost of renting housing you will get approximately 1500-1600 euros per month.

Salary level in 2021

In Germany, as in most developed countries, the minimum wage is set by law. In 2021 it was 9.19 euros per hour or 1470.4 euros per month (160 working hours). Some sectors of the economy have higher rates. Thus, for qualified builders, the minimum wage is 1.5 times higher.

Average salary in Germany (file photo)

Average salary in Germany in 2021 by profession (euros per month):

  • 5800 doctors;
  • 4200 teachers;
  • 4200 professional workers (electricians, welders);
  • 3900 construction workers;
  • 3000 junior medical personnel;
  • 2500 drivers;
  • 2500 sellers;
  • 2000 cooks;
  • 1800 waitresses, maids.

The amount of remuneration depends greatly on the region and the size of the company.

The figures given reflect gross salaries, that is, before taxes. How much net remains depends on the size of the salary. Germany has a progressive income tax rate: from 14 to 45%. The higher the salary, the greater the percentage you will have to pay. In addition to income tax, contributions for health insurance, etc. are deducted.

Is it possible to get a job in Germany with a Polish visa?

Knowing firsthand about the overly strict rules and employees of German consulates, many foreigners try to get to work in Germany through other countries, for example through Poland. This is especially true for Ukrainians who in 2021 received a visa-free entry permit, and with it the opportunity to work in Poland with a biometric passport for a period of three months.

European legislation establishes that a migrant worker does not have the right to work in other EU countries with a national visa, say, Poland. But even this rule has a loophole: a Polish employer can send its employee on a business trip to Germany for a period of three months, provided that the latter has been working in the company for at least 1 year.

The diagram looks like this:

  1. The Polish manager formalizes the foreign employee.
  2. He is given a travel document.
  3. The German consulate issues a permit for three months of work in Germany - this document is called Van der Elst Visa.
  4. The applicant is sent to work for a German company.

If the candidate has already received a voivodeship visa in Poland, then he will be able to work on German territory for 6 months.

Jobs for students in Germany 2021 for Belarusians

Students in Germany can primarily count on participating in volunteer programs. But such sets of events are suitable for people who want to spend their summer holidays usefully. For helping German families or organizations, young people are given 250-400 euros a month “for pocket money.”

Volunteers may have different tasks. Some families hire helpers who must go to stores, clean homes, iron, do laundry, sweep yards, and do other simple work for no more than 4 hours a day. Large organizations recruit people to participate in large shows. Sometimes, under the guise of recruiting volunteers, farms hire employees for seasonal work in agriculture (picking berries, preparing feed for livestock).

Students who study in Germany can apply for a work permit no earlier than six months after the start of their studies. Until this period passes, it is believed that a person should be completely focused on the educational process.

Summarizing

In the ranking of countries most popular among labor migrants, Germany occupies a leading position. This is due to the stable political and economic situation, as well as the care of local authorities about their citizens.

The highest chances of successfully getting a job in Germany have specialists of the highest category, with appropriate education, work experience and knowledge of the German language. They also willingly accept those who are willing to do unskilled work - general workers, cleaners, service personnel in hotels and restaurants.

In order to travel to Germany to look for work, you will have to apply for a national visa, confirm your diploma and pass an exam on proficiency in the state language. And although the salary level in Germany is higher than in other European countries, it should still be remembered that living expenses will also make up a significant part of the budget.

Law on immigration of specialists to Germany

On December 19, 2021, the German Federal Government proposed amendments to labor legislation.

On June 7, 2021, the Bundestag passed the bill in the third reading, but the final order and its formalization by the Federal President are still pending.

The Skills Immigration Act creates the basis for the immigration of qualified specialists with good knowledge of the German language (B1) from third countries to Germany, who can obtain a work permit lasting six months.

Qualified workers are considered to be both graduates of vocational colleges and workers with qualified vocational education. Attention: recognition of qualifications is a prerequisite. There is an exception only for IT specialists who have at least three years of work experience and currently earn a salary of at least 4,020 euros per month.

The law does not make the hiring process easier for unskilled or low-skilled third-country nationals.

It is also possible to enter Germany to look for work. But this requires knowledge of the German language and a means of livelihood in Germany.

The bill comes into force on January 1, 2021. It is also reported that the law will be in force until June 2022.
