Ways to check the correct translation of the first and last name in a foreign passport into English
Responsibility for incorrect translation of personal data in accordance with the current standards of Russian and international legislation lies entirely with FMS employees. They are required to check the information from the application form for obtaining a foreign passport with information from the internal identity card. If there is an error, the questionnaire should not be accepted.
A common cause of filling errors is human error.
Therefore, the future passport holder is recommended to take the following steps:
- checking the correctness of the data in the application (questionnaire), checking with the information in the internal passport;
- control of the content of preliminary documents provided by the Federal Migration Service;
- reconcile the information in the international passport; if an error is found, immediately inform the service employees.
It should be remembered that incorrectly entered first and last names will not affect the ability to cross the border.
But if they do not coincide with information from other documents, a bank statement, a power of attorney for a child, etc. – the customs service will be able to prohibit departure.
In this case, you will have to apply again for a new passport. To avoid such situations, it is recommended to follow all the steps described above. Additionally, you can use transliteration services from independent sources.
Free online services
Currently, you can find many specialized resources on the Internet that offer free transliteration from Russian to Latin. Their main drawback is the inability to check the algorithm. It is important that they function in accordance with the current standards described in Order No. 211.
The procedure for translating Russian words, first and last names using such services is simple. They work online, no need to fill out special request forms. Usually these are two active windows, in one of which words in Cyrillic are entered, after pressing the button labeled “transliteration” or similar, the same word appears in the other window, but written in Latin.
To check the relevance of the working algorithm of the module, you can do the following:
- Fill in the field with words containing “control” letters – E, Y, Yu, C and Ъ. accordingly, the program must translate them as E, Y, IU, TS and IE.
- On the site page it is usually attributed that the algorithm of the module’s actions complies with the norms of Order No. 211 of the FMS.
- Make several control transliterations on various services.
- If you have a foreign passport received after 2015, the data from it can be used as verification.
It is important to remember that such services are not responsible for the results obtained.
They are informational; data from them is not used as reference. They are necessary only for additional verification of the correctness of the transliteration.
Most often, they are used not to control information in a foreign passport, but when drawing up other documents in a foreign language. But even in this case, it is recommended to use the services of several sites to obtain an accurate result.
Free during a visit to the FMS
Unlike independent services and websites, there is no transliteration service on the official website of the Federal Migration Service. This makes it difficult to buy airline tickets or book a hotel room if you haven't already received your foreign ID. A difference of even one letter can cause denial of boarding or check-in.
The only possible option for an accurate verification is to ask the Service employee to indicate the exact translation of the first and last name when submitting the package of documents . It should be remembered that this is not part of his direct job responsibilities.
But, in essence, the employee must do the following.
- Check that the form is filled out correctly.
- Take your full name from it and check it with your internal passport.
- Enter information into the program.
- Dictate or print the result.
This will not take much time, but at the same time the applicant will have the opportunity to correctly complete all other documents without waiting to receive a foreign passport.
Important - when replacing an identity card for traveling outside the Russian Federation, the new spelling of the full name may differ from the old one. This must be taken into account not only when performing subsequent actions (booking an air ticket, hotel room, car rental), but also taking into account the content of previous documents.

Replacing a passport: how to leave the old spelling
To save information about your first and last name from old documents, you must contact the FMS office. This must be done when submitting a package for a new foreign passport. Otherwise, your full name will be entered according to the new rules.
The desire to leave the transliteration unchanged must be justified. This is a legal right, the implementation of which is possible on the basis of an application. It is compiled in free form. A photocopy of your old ID is required when traveling abroad.
The basis for maintaining the old transliteration may be one of the following documents:
- birth certificate from another country;
- passport of another country;
- documents confirming a residence permit in another country;
- certificate of marriage outside Russia;
- educational diploma obtained abroad;
- copy of the visa.
In the future, employees of the Federal Migration Service are required to make transliteration according to the information received. If this does not happen, the applicant has the right to file a complaint and petition to change the data according to the primary information.
To avoid misunderstandings, it is recommended that at the stage of submitting the package of documents, you make a photocopy of the application and the basis attached to it. The civil servant must put his resolution on familiarization. In the future, this will help resolve possible conflict situations.
