Required papers depending on the type of visa requested

To apply for different visas you will need a slightly different list of additional documents.

Tourism

If a person wishes to obtain a tourist visa, he must additionally submit:

  • A document confirming that a person has already booked tickets for any type of transport for a certain date.

If a person intends to cross the Dutch border by car, then instead of tickets he is given:

  1. Technical passport of transport.
  2. Driver license.
  3. Insurance policy.
  • A document confirming the availability of reserved accommodation in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
  • A document confirming a person’s financial security. This document can be an extract from a financial institution where a person has a current account. It is worth remembering that deposit accounts are not accepted for consideration.

Sample bank statement

Requirements:

  1. A person’s current account must have an amount of 50 euros for every day of stay in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
  2. The statement must be issued on the official letterhead of the financial institution.
  3. The extract must be signed by the supervisor.
  • Document from the place of employment. This paper must indicate the person’s position, his salary, and the date of his enrollment in the workforce. And also, the document must indicate that during the person’s absence, his workplace is retained (a sample certificate of employment in Russian can be downloaded here, in English here).

If a citizen does not work, then he can replace this certificate with a pension certificate, student card or a set of papers for private entrepreneurs.

If a visa to the Netherlands is issued by a private entrepreneur, then he must additionally submit:

  • A document confirming the registration of an individual entrepreneur, issued by the tax service at the place of registration.

  • Photocopy of TIN (if available).

  • Tax return in form 3-NDFL. This declaration is submitted in order to prove that the person does not have any tax debts.

To obtain a visa, students submit a student ID and a certificate from the educational institution confirming the availability of vacations during the trip to Holland.

Non-working persons cannot submit a document from their place of employment. In this case, an extract from a banking institution confirming a sufficient amount of money in the current account becomes a mandatory document for them. But it is worth remembering that according to the requirements, a non-working person must have at least 90 euros in his account for every day he is in the Netherlands, instead of the required 50 euros.

If a non-working person cannot submit an extract from a financial institution, then he should present a sponsorship letter to the consulate. This is a document confirming that a person has a person willing to act as a sponsor and pay all expenses associated with a trip to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Sample sponsorship letter

The sponsor must attach a photocopy of his internal passport and a document from the place of employment indicating his monthly salary to the sponsorship letter. If the sponsoring person is one of the applicant’s relatives, then additional documents confirming the relationship between them are also attached.

Business visit

If a person opens an entry permit for the purpose of employment in the country or a business trip, then he submits an invitation from the company.

Guest visit

An invitation letter is also submitted to the diplomatic mission if a guest visa is issued. But in the case of a visitor visa, the inviting party is an individual, and not a legal entity as for a work or business visa.

In addition to the invitation letter, the inviting party must provide a letter of guarantee, which is certified by the municipality. They also provide documents confirming the relationship between the applicant and the inviting person. But this document is submitted only if there is a blood connection between them.

Transit permit

To obtain a transit permit, the applicant must bring to the consulate the following documents:

  1. Original and photocopy of a ticket to the country he plans to visit after the Netherlands.
  2. A document confirming the reservation of a hotel room in this kingdom.
  3. An extract from a financial institution indicating the balance of funds in the current account.
  4. A photocopy of the visa permit to the country where the applicant intends to go after Holland. If a visa to a given state is not required, then simply provide an invitation letter or a housing reservation document.

student visa

If an entry permit to the Kingdom of the Netherlands is issued for the purpose of further training, then it is worth submitting:

  1. Invitation letter issued by an educational institution in the Netherlands.
  2. A document confirming the availability of sufficient financial resources to live in this country for the entire period of study.

We advise you to look at how education works in Holland.

What is the point of a sponsorship letter for a Schengen visa in 2021

To obtain a Schengen visa, you must provide a certificate from the bank with the required amount of funds in your account. To travel to Europe, you must have enough money on your card with an approximate calculation of 50 euros (the exact amount can be found on the website of the country's embassy) for each day spent in an EU country.

And if in the case of a working tourist everything is clear - you need a certificate from work indicating the salary, then for students, pensioners and the unemployed a written guarantee is required. The sponsorship letter confirms the legality of the applicant’s funds.

How to properly draw up a document

  • Served in free form.
  • Information must be truthful and reliable. If the embassy suspects a lie, the visa will be denied.
  • One written letter can be distributed to a group of people or to an entire family.
  • The sponsorship letter can be typed on a computer, printed and signed.
  • If you have doubts about the need to draw up such a letter, check this point with the embassy or consulate.

What additional documents need to be attached?

First of all, this is:

  • Copies of pages of the guarantor’s passport (domestic and foreign).
  • An official document from the guarantor's employment regarding his salary. This certificate must contain statements of accrual of money for 3-6 months, the signature of an accountant and the details of the organization.

Example of a certificate of employment for sponsorship

The guarantor's payment must be at least 25 thousand rubles. For each day of stay, the sponsored person is allocated at least 50 euros.

  • If the sponsor works privately, then a certificate of tax accounting and company registration must be attached.
  • Data on the financial position of the guarantor must be presented in the form of a salary certificate (valid for one month), as well as recent cash flows. In addition, there must be information about how much money is in the account during a given period.

Who needs a sponsorship letter?

Sometimes it is not necessary to write a sponsorship letter to apply for Schengen. In other cases, it is easier to provide a bank statement or a document confirming an open line of credit. But there are situations when, without a sponsorship letter, you will be denied a visa over and over again. Consider these cases:

  • Non-working pensioners. In some cases, non-working pensioners who do not have sufficient savings (the amount of expenses per day is set individually by each eurozone country, but the average value is 50 euros per day per person) only needs to present a certificate of the amount of their pension. But if the pension cannot cover expenses in the host country, then you will most likely be denied a visa. In this case, it is better to play it safe and draw up a sponsorship letter in which the person traveling with the pensioner assumes all financial obligations.
  • Disabled citizens. In this case, a sponsorship letter will almost certainly be required.
  • Unemployed students. It all depends on how much your route is planned. If you are going as an organized group to a ski resort, you can document that you are expected there, then perhaps there will be no need for a sponsorship letter. To clarify your individual case, contact the consulate of your host country for advice.
  • Temporarily unemployed citizens. In this case, a sponsorship letter will almost certainly be required.
  • Child over 14 years old. In this case, almost no consulate of the Schengen countries requires a sponsorship letter if the child is traveling with his parents or one of them. Just keep in mind that it may be required and check with the consulate staff about its need.

How to format a letter correctly if a child is traveling

Certain nuances need to be taken into account:

  • Only direct relatives - parents or grandparents - can act as guarantors. Brothers or sisters with uncles and aunts are not suitable.
  • If the child’s last name does not match the parent’s, then you need to attach a document confirming their relationship - a certificate of divorce and new marriage, data on the child’s birth, etc.

  • If the sponsor and the sponsored have different surnames, then it is necessary to attach a document confirming the change of surname.
  • A copy of the sponsor's passport with personal data.

Schengen countries on the map

Greece, Czech Republic, Spain:

  • No relationship required.

To obtain a visa to visit the territory of the Czech Republic, you need to provide not only a certificate of the amount of funds in your bank account, but also data on their movement over the last 3 months.

United Kingdom:

  • English translation required.
  • It does not need to be certified by a notary office. If the sponsor is not a relative, then the letter must explain in detail why the sponsorship is being provided.

Writing a sponsorship letter

There is no clearly established template for writing a sponsorship letter. But, nevertheless, there are certain rules that should be followed when compiling it:

  • If the sponsorship letter is written by a relative, then it is necessary to provide a link to the corresponding document establishing the relationship. A copy of this document must be attached to the letter. For example, if you undertake to financially support your retired parent on a trip, you must refer to the birth certificate, which indicates you as a child, and the person whose sponsor you are as your parent. A copy of the birth certificate must be attached to the letter.
  • Indicate in the letter the dates of arrival and departure from the country.
  • Please fill out the letter in English. This will reduce the chance of visa refusal.
  • It’s better to play it safe and have the sponsorship letter notarized.

Of course, if a close relative assumes financial obligations, then notarization is not necessary. It’s another matter if the obligations are assumed by a person who is not your relative. Such a letter must be certified by a notary, otherwise your visa will be denied. So, you can download samples of sponsorship letters in both languages using the links below.

Please note that the documents must provide information relevant to your case. To ensure you don't miss anything, replace or delete (if not necessary) the text in underlined italics.
