Category M opens automatically when passing any other category

Category M appeared on driver's licenses in 2013. It gives the right, upon reaching 16 years of age, to drive a moped and a light ATV.

To obtain a driver's license you must:

• sign up for training at a driving school;

• pass the traffic police exam.

Types and meanings of marks in the license of the new model

The designations are written in letters of the Latin alphabet and are deciphered as follows:

1. The first and most common license mark is AT. This means that the driver can only drive cars with an automatic transmission. If the mark is in column 12, it will only apply to the vehicle category opposite which it is indicated. If it is in line 14, it will apply to all open categories at the same time. A driver with this mark is not allowed to drive a car with a manual transmission. Most often this is due to medical contraindications.
2. MS – motorcycle seat. It is entered in the line with category B1 and allows you to drive tricycles or quadricycles with a motorcycle seat design or the presence of a motorcycle handlebar.
3. AS – car landing. Placed in the line with category B1. The mark prohibits the driver from driving tricycles and quadricycles with a motorcycle seat or motorcycle handlebars.
4. The ML mark indicates that driving mopeds is prohibited. Located in the category M column. Putting this mark means that the driver has diseases, the presence of which is contraindicated in driving mopeds and scooters.
5. MC – manual control. Always indicated in column 14. It means that the driver has medical indications for manual control of the vehicle. This mark applies to people with disabilities.
6. APS - you are allowed to drive only those vehicles that have a parking sensor system.
7. The GCL mark indicates that the driver must wear vision correction devices. These could be glasses or contact lenses.
8. HA/CF means that the vehicle driver must use instruments to correct hearing loss.
9. The “Duplicate” mark does not have any significance for driving the vehicle, but is affixed in the case when this certificate was issued as a duplicate document replacing or stolen rights.
10. “A medical certificate is required.” A note is made in the rights of a person with medical disabilities. In this case, you can drive a car only if you have a valid medical certificate.

Which vehicles belong to category M

The new column appeared as a consequence of constant violations of the rules by minors driving light motor vehicles. Now such drivers have become full participants in the movement with all the attendant responsibilities.

Having category M you can drive a vehicle with an engine of no more than 50 cc. cm and a power of no more than 4 kW. The maximum speed of such vehicles does not reach 60 km/h. These parameters fit:

• scooters;
• minibikes;
• mopeds;
• small quad bikes.

AT - automatic

The special AT mark allows you to drive only vehicles with an automatic gearbox.

This mark can be placed either in column 12 (in this case it refers to one category or subcategory) or in column 14 (applies to all categories simultaneously).

If the “automatic” mark is marked, the driver can drive vehicles of the selected category only with an automatic gearbox and does not have the right to drive cars with a manual transmission.

MS – motorcycle seat

The MS special mark can only apply to subcategory B1. It allows you to control only quadricycles and tricycles that have a motorcycle seat or motorcycle handlebars.

AS – car landing

The AS mark in 2021 is the most common because... it is assigned to most drivers during a planned replacement of a category B license. In this regard, questions arise about what the inscription AS means next to subcategory B1.

It's quite simple. The AS mark has the opposite meaning to the MS mark. It allows you to control quadricycles and tricycles that do not have a motorcycle seat and motorcycle handlebars.

It does not impose any restrictions on driving category B vehicles.

ML – prohibition of driving mopeds

MS – manual control

What does the ML mark mean and in what cases is it placed?

Before applying for a license, the candidate must undergo a medical examination. Based on the results of the check, an ML mark may be placed on driving documents. The mark means a ban on driving this type of transport for medical reasons. This may mean the person has a disease that is incompatible with driving a moped.

Also, the mark may appear due to the absence of a category in the medical certificate provided when replacing the certificate. This can happen if, when passing the medical commission, you did not inform the doctors that you also want to drive a category M vehicle.

Who gets the ML stamp on their license?

The ML mark is relevant for drivers who received or replaced their license after April 2021: then the “M” category appeared as a separate line on the driver’s license. ML can also be given if the medical certificate does not indicate the ability to drive a category “M” vehicle. In October 2015, Order No. 365 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia dated May 13, 2009 “On the implementation of a driver’s license” was edited.
