Law on citizenship of the Republic of Belarus

For a long stay, a residence permit or citizenship is issued. How to obtain status literally immediately is described in the next subsection “peculiarities of citizenship.” In other cases, only after 7 years of living in Belarus there are grounds for acquiring citizenship.

The application is submitted to the Department of Citizenship and Migration, which is located in the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus or to the Population Register Office. Features of obtaining Belarusian citizenship for a citizen of the Russian Federation

Due to the fact that an international agreement on a simplified procedure for acquiring citizenship was signed between Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, special conditions are established for residents of these countries. According to them, the following rules apply:

Citizens of partner countries can move with the right to obtain citizenship to their closest relatives who permanently reside in Belarus. These include: parents, spouses, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren.
If a candidate for obtaining Belarusian citizenship lived in one of the partner states in the format of the USSR, RSFSR and at the same time was registered in the USSR, was also born or lived on the territory of Belarus until December 21, 1991, then simple conditions for citizenship also apply to him.

For registration, you will need a minimum package of documents: an application, a passport, notarized copies of a marriage and birth certificate, a certificate confirming one of the above options for obtaining a temporary residence permit or citizenship of Belarus.
Until a decision is made, a citizen of the Russian Federation is not deprived of his existing citizenship. After a positive answer, the authorities may still ask for a refusal of the Russian passport.
Registration for citizenship is completed within three months, but no more. The internal affairs bodies of Belarus are responsible for meeting deadlines.

You can receive a Belarusian passport upon reaching your 14th birthday, or earlier if you wish. The cost is set according to the basic value. There is no state fee for children who have received automatic citizenship. For those who do not fall into this category, 1 basic value is established. In 2021, it is equal to 27 Belarusian rubles (Br), which at the current exchange rate is 800 Russian rubles (₽).

A different amount is provided for the procedure for expedited issuance of a Belarusian passport, the amount of which is 54 Br or 1600 ₽. The standard delivery time is within a month. In case of expedited passport issuance – 7-15 days.

Obtaining citizenship through marriage

The Republic of Belarus is home to 9.4 million people, of which about 800 thousand are Russians, 300 thousand Poles and 160 thousand Ukrainians, so mixed marriages are not uncommon here. The majority of ethnic groups have remained living in Belarus since the times of the USSR, but still often Belarusians and local Russians marry Russian citizens.
