Autobiography for civil service: writing sample for 2021

Why do you need an autobiography?

First of all, let’s figure out what the concept of “autobiography” means.

Translated from Greek, the compound from the words “author” and “biography” means a description of one’s life in chronological order.

Analysis of your life history will allow, without knowing you personally, to form an idea of your character, inner world, level of education and business acumen. It will make it clear whether there is a desire for career growth and how responsible the attitude is towards completing work and other assignments.

As such, the law does not establish mandatory requirements when applying for a job to present an autobiography along with identification documents confirming the presence of a sufficient level of education, qualifications to perform the job or a work record.

At the same time, the employer has the right to ask a candidate for a vacancy to write an autobiography in order, for example, to make the right choice from several applicants as to who is best suited for a given position.

However, the law also establishes those cases when an autobiography is submitted along with other mandatory documents.

Often the concept of “autobiography” is associated with a detailed description of a person’s life, starting from the day of his birth and who his parents were, an analysis of the successes achieved or a haunting series of failures, an understanding of the changes taking place and personal experiences.

In this case, autobiography is most often a literary genre, when the author, from the height of his past years, strives to comprehend his life as a whole, to leave his story to his descendants, so that his grandchildren and great-grandchildren know about their ancestors.

As a rule, questions about the necessity and correctness of drawing up an autobiography arise when it comes to a document for official use that remains in a person’s personal file.

Depending on the purpose of the information, you should focus on certain moments of life.

A laconic, well-written autobiography will help you make a first impression about a person, find out whether he knows how to express thoughts, how interesting he is as a person.

Here are some of the situations when a person needs to reliably give information about the events of his life:

  • upon admission to higher education institutions;
  • at the request of the employer during employment;
  • joining the ranks of a political party;
  • to nominate oneself for an elective position;
  • if you wish, take part in various competitions;
  • for registration of guardianship, trusteeship or adoption of children.

Rules for writing an autobiography

The document may be needed when you get a job, go to school, and also for the personnel department of an enterprise, as a document that must be included in your personal file. And if in the personnel department of the enterprise where you already work, this document will be looked at as a formality, then in a commercial structure, whether you will be offered a job or not depends on its competent preparation. Everyone should know how to write an autobiography and how to do it correctly.

There are no legal requirements for the preparation of this type of document; therefore, you must be guided by the rules of office work. In the case of an autobiography, this is a rule for composing business letters.

  • The biography should form a clear idea of the compiler’s life path and main biographical events. It is written in any form in the first person directly by the compiler, on an A4 sheet, by hand or in printed form. It should begin with the words “I, last name, middle name...”.
  • The autobiographical document should not be too large in volume. When presenting events and facts, try to be brief. Its volume should not exceed 1-2 sheets. Experience shows that a long autobiography does not achieve the result for which it was created, but gives the exact opposite effect.
  • The manner of presentation should correspond to business style. When reading your biography, attention will be paid not only to its content, but also to its design, style of speech, and of course, the absence of grammatical, stylistic and punctuation errors in it. All this will give you additional bonuses.
  • It is important in compiling this document to maintain chronological order. You need to present all the events of your life in order, without jumping from one event to another and without skipping anything.
  • The information you present in your autobiography must be accurate. By including erroneous or unreliable information about yourself in a document, you can ruin your business reputation, which will prevent you from getting the job you are looking for or achieving another goal you have set.

Difference from resume

In European countries and the United States, when applying for a job, it is common practice to consider a candidate’s resume, where, unlike an autobiography, attention is focused on information regarding qualifications, education, and achievements in the professional field.

Although similar in purpose as a document, an autobiography and a resume are still not at all the same thing.

A resume acts as a shortened version of an autobiography. Provides an opportunity to understand how valuable work experience and knowledge can be for a company’s activities in order to consider an applicant as a potential employee.

An autobiography will allow, when selecting candidates, to take into account the psychological characteristics, which are compiled according to the style of presentation and the identified priorities. In terms of volume, the content of a resume is usually much smaller than an autobiography of the same person.

The main emphasis when drawing up a resume is on the availability of education that allows you to apply for a specific position, advanced training, work experience in this field of activity, achievements and merits. A person's social background or participation in social events does not matter.

To make the differences clearer, let us summarize the goals and order of presentation of information, and other criteria of these two documents in a table.

Additional information in the autobiography

An autobiography compiled by a job seeker is usually called a resume. The only distinguishing feature of this document from the example of writing an autobiography discussed above is that in the resume there is no need to disclose information about the husband, parents and other family members in such detail. This issue can be touched upon very briefly. Otherwise, these two documents do not differ. The main task of a resume is not to reveal all aspects of your life, but to focus specifically on your work qualities and previous work career, which will enable the employer to evaluate you as a future potential employee.

Nowadays there is a fashion to supplement your resume with your photos. There are no special requirements for photography, but the style of clothing in which you are photographed and your hairstyle must be businesslike. And the background should be neutral. Palm trees and the sea, of course, will not do.

A good addition to your resume would be testimonials and recommendations from your previous job. As a rule, such documents are drawn up by the head of the enterprise. This can be an additional bonus when hiring you. Such documents are especially useful for workers in the humanitarian professions and workers with a narrow specialization.

In the autobiographical document, it is advisable to mention military service for men, maternity leave and the birth of a child for women. At the end of the autobiography, the signature of the person who compiled the document and the date of its compilation are placed. Please indicate your passport details and exact postal address. Now you know how to write an autobiography for work.

What to write correctly and what to indicate

There are no special uniform forms to fill out when compiling an autobiography.

You can print out the document, but most often they ask for a handwritten text, which provides additional information about the person.

Illegible handwriting and grammatical errors can be detrimental because the reader will notice it.

In free form, observing chronological sequence, they describe all stages of their life, starting with the date and place of birth, information about their parents.

In addition to personal data, date of birth, they usually indicate the place of birth, where they studied, worked, information about their marital status, and the presence of children.

Despite the absence of mandatory requirements, we highlight the basic rules if we consider a written life history from the point of view of a document:

  • There is no need to mention the smallest details of events that have occurred over all the years of life; it is important to focus on the main thing; voluminous essays are tiring, it is unlikely to be interesting at all.
  • Competent speech and brevity will allow you to evaluate your ability to convey information without unnecessary emotions and earn “extra points.”
  • The chronology of the events described must follow a logical sequence.

The most important thing to remember is that an autobiography is not a literary plot; there should be no embellishment or distortion of facts.

For example, if you entered college and did not graduate, there is no need to talk about having a higher education to get the job you want. False information will only create a bad reputation.

If you have changed several jobs, indicate the reasons. We do not recommend giving your assessments to previous employers.

For information! The narration is in the first person as the author describes events related to his life.

When the names of institutions, organizations, settlements, and educational institutions are mentioned in the text, indicate what they were officially called at the time of the events described. If there was a renaming, you can add a new option next to it.

What it is?

An autobiography is not a resume, although it is very similar to it. This document is intended to present the main points from the life of the compiler, but strictly within certain limits.

What does an autobiography consist of?

If everything is reflected briefly and succinctly in a resume, then in an autobiography there is room to expand. The peculiarity of an autobiography is that a person writes about himself, independently decides what will be reflected in it in more detail or concisely, which points can be completely omitted.

Filling plan

Since there is no standard sample autobiography, you can draw up a rough plan yourself.

Here are the main points that need to be covered:

  • your details – last name, first name and patronymic;
  • date and place of birth with clarification of the name of the locality, territorial affiliation to a constituent entity of the Russian Federation or countries of the near and far abroad;
  • information about parents, what they do;
  • social status - study or work, are a government employee or are engaged in business, have a confirmed unemployed status or are a pensioner;
  • list which educational institutions you graduated from, detailing the chronology of periods of study, specialties received, qualifications, it is worth mentioning special awards if they were received during the period of study;
  • when you started working, where you worked during all this time, indicating the dates of hiring and dismissal, names of organizations, positions held, if you continue to work - your current place of work;
  • marital status, details of the spouse and children, if any - last name, first name, patronymic, full date of birth;
  • residential address and contact telephone number, possibly an email address;
  • end any business letter by indicating the date of composition and the personal signature of the originator, deciphering next to the surname, initials of the name, patronymic.

Autobiography for work.

The general principle of drawing up a document when applying for a job is standard. But here the following points should be emphasized:

  • Write down the personal qualities that are required for the job you are applying for - this will not only save time when processing the document, but will also allow you to be assessed as objectively as possible as a candidate.
  • Pay attention to the projects you have worked on - this will show your ability to work in a team.
  • Describe your education, but focus on your professional success.
  • Reflect your wishes for work: the form of work (for example, if you like to work independently, write about it), the desired salary, the possibility of business trips, etc.

Autobiography examples.

Since there is no established form for drawing up a document, you can use the attached example as a sample. All other autobiographies can be written in a similar way, the only difference will be what to emphasize: everyone’s achievements and professional experience are different.

How to write an autobiography for a student?

The general rules for drawing up a document are the same as when applying for a job. But since there are no professional achievements in this case, emphasis should be placed on the knowledge accumulated during training (successful completion of internship, participation in seminars at different levels, completion of additional courses, knowledge of foreign languages, etc.).

How to write to a person who is looking for a job for the first time?

If you do not have professional experience, you need to put maximum emphasis on your personal qualities that are suitable for the job you want to get. It should be borne in mind that if you can present everything in a favorable light, this will characterize you in a special way and lack of experience will not be an obstacle to hiring.

Both a schoolchild and an adult may need to write a description of their life.

Despite the fact that there is no single standard, there is still a general template for drawing up a document that can be taken as a sample autobiography:

  • first, the title is written in the middle of the line;
  • proceed to the test part, starting with the presentation of their personal data - “I, Petrov Petrovich, was born in Moscow on January 1, 1980”;
  • it is typical to further clarify the study time with the name of educational institutions;
  • pay attention to work and service in the armed forces (if any);

When submitting your CV, do not forget that false or exaggerated information will only worsen the opinion of you, since all information is verified.

It is important to adhere to a business style of writing, to avoid deliberate negligence, using colloquial expressions and abbreviations.

Having achievements, it would be a good idea for a young man to reflect them when filling out the conscription form.

It is necessary to clarify whether he can do pull-ups and push-ups. If there are sports categories and personal awards, there is no need to remain silent about them.

Reading such an autobiography, it should be clear that taking responsibility for the life of a little person is a mature, balanced decision.

Reference! Both spouses wishing to foster a child must submit an autobiography.

Let us give as an example a sample autobiography for the guardianship and trusteeship authorities, written by a man:

For FMS

Instead of an afterword

As we have shown with examples, it is not particularly difficult to compose an autobiography if necessary.

You can, once you have gathered your thoughts, in a calm environment, write in detail the story of your life and, if necessary, make copies of the document, making significant changes.

The volume of an autobiography is not limited by any standards. Still, do not forget that brevity is the sister of talent.

A logically constructed sequence of events, literacy, and meaningful text about your achievements and business qualities are one of the guarantees of success.

Autobiography sample

An autobiography is a free-form description of life stages by the author. In most cases, this document is drawn up during the hiring process, as well as admission to service or study. It is necessary to inform the organization about the major milestones in the life of a potential employee or student. Most often, this document describes the entire period of life. But there are exceptions that involve describing a specific life stage that lasted several years.

Many people confuse an autobiographical certificate with a questionnaire. However, this documentation has significant differences. First of all, they concern information content. In autobiographies, it is customary to indicate more complete information about a person’s life. For example, this document may contain information about the reasons for leaving a previous job, justification for the desire to work in this particular company, etc.

Compiling a curriculum vitae is an integral part of the employment procedure.

Note! Before writing an autobiography, you need to know that this document does not have any regulated forms. It is filled out on a blank A4 sheet and does not contain any columns, questions or other prompts. However, when filling out this document, you must adhere to a number of rules.

What should be indicated to students and schoolchildren

People without much professional experience (schoolchildren or students) can also get a job by competently compiling a biography.

How to compose

It is sometimes difficult for such applicants. And the success of these endeavors depends on how to write an autobiography for a job (often the first).

The Internet is full of different funny examples of biographies. But even in serious companies, sometimes they ask non-standard questions like “where is the rear windshield of the car.”

In addition to general information, the place of study is indicated. Simply indicating the name of the university and the specialty you are receiving is not enough. In order for a candidate to seriously interest a company, it is necessary to describe in detail all educational achievements - olympiads, projects, conferences.

If at the time of writing you have already completed an internship, be sure to include it in the document, indicating the name of the company. An active life position is also worthy of inclusion.

And in practice itself, the question may arise of how to write an autobiography, providing accurate statements about yourself.

In the case of schoolchildren, everything is simplified. They usually have no practical experience, which is why the emphasis is on studying and attending various clubs. There is one more nuance - many high school students try to work part-time in large companies. Parents can help fill out the documents so that the young applicant does not have problems in the future.

If there are some concerns about this, get the child to sign the papers in your presence. This is a legal right.

As you can see, for these citizens the difference in document requirements is minimal. Let's see which autobiographies and writing samples are suitable for a schoolchild or student.
