Rules for entry into Armenia for citizens of the Russian Federation
Since citizens of the Russian Federation do not need to obtain a visa in advance to travel to Armenia, they must present a foreign or internal passport at the border.
It is important to know! If you enter with a foreign passport, then the validity of the document should not expire during the entire trip.
The maximum period of stay on the territory of the state is 180 days. When crossing the border, customs control officers may require:
- a document allowing you to travel outside the Russian Federation;
- a passport of a resident of the Russian Federation or an identity card valid temporarily in case of loss of an official notification;
- a foreign passport for children under 14 years of age; a birth certificate cannot be used for these purposes;
- diplomatic or service passport (for those traveling to the state for work).
At the airport or when traveling by car, a customs officer will definitely ask about the purpose of travel and the approximate time of stay in the country. Since entry into Armenia with a Russian passport is carried out quickly, similar documents will be required to leave the state.
Features of entry using an internal passport
If a Russian is going to visit Armenia for tourism purposes, then when crossing the border he will only need to present a passport.
The arrival point must be the air terminal in Gyumri (“Shirak”) or in Yerevan (“Zvartnots”).
At other airports in Armenia, a Russian who does not have a foreign passport can be sent back.

Passport requirements
The internal passport must be valid for the entire trip plus 3 months after returning home.
Do not damage its cover or pages containing important information.

Additional papers
Additionally, with an internal passport when crossing the border, you can provide:
- diplomatic passport;
- a document confirming that the person intends to return to his homeland;
- service passport.
The tourist must have return air tickets and a hotel room reservation. But this is not a mandatory requirement. Usually Russians are not asked to provide additional documents.
Traveling with children
Children under 14 years of age can enter Armenia only with a foreign passport. It is not possible to enter the country using a birth certificate.
Persons over 14 can cross the border using an internal passport. Like adults, they can only do this if they travel by plane.
If the child is accompanied only by his father or mother, in addition to his passport, to cross the border, he will need a notarized power of attorney from one of the parents.
What can you import to Armenia?
When traveling, you should follow the rules of entry into Armenia for Russians.
There are no restrictions on the export and import of foreign currency, but it is mandatory to fill out a special declaration, which is issued at customs. This document must be kept with you during the entire trip.
It is prohibited to transport cash in excess of $10,000 within the country. The national currency of Armenia is not prohibited for import or export.
It is not allowed to transport items belonging to antiques and other valuables without special notification.
It is important to know! Experienced tourists recommend declaring an amount of $2,000, since customs officers may have additional questions when entering with such an amount. If the cash equivalent is declared, such problems will not arise.
Country available for holidays
Almost 2 million tourists visited Armenia in 2021. 45% of them are guests from Russia. This is stated in the Tourism Department of the Transcaucasian state. Representatives of the department claim that for our compatriots the republic is in the top three most accessible territories for travel.
In 2015, the decline in outbound tourism from the Russian Federation decreased by a third. At the same time, in Armenia it decreased by only 6%. Russians began to go on holiday to the former Soviet republic not only in summer and autumn, but also in winter - for the New Year holidays. And in 2021, tourist flows from Russia increased by 20%.
No visa or passport required
In 2015, Yerevan published an updated list of states whose citizens are exempt from the need to obtain a visa. This list also includes the Russian Federation. And as of 2021, an agreement was signed under which a foreign passport is no longer required. Russian travelers only need to have their internal passport with them. However, visitors from the Russian Federation are required to comply with the rules mandatory for foreigners coming to Armenia.
Crossing the border of Armenia by car
Citizens of the Russian Federation can come to Armenia even by their own transport. But this can only be done from Georgia or Iran. Customs points from Azerbaijan and Turkey are not working.
To cross the border in this way, in addition to the stationary package of documents, you also need to prepare:
- driver's license of international standard;
- notification that the vehicle is officially registered.
If the car is borrowed from a relative or friend, you should take a document confirming the legality of its use.
Each driver traveling in his own car is required to pay tolls and fees for using Armenian roads. This amount is 2000 Armenian drams or about 250 rubles.
Border crossing
More often, Russians get to Armenia by plane, less often by other means of transport (car, bus). Each method has its own characteristics in terms of the list of documents and other nuances.
Documents for crossing the border
Russian citizens have the right to provide the following identification documents when crossing the border:
- internal Russian passport;
- international passport;
- official, diplomatic passport;
- seaman's certificate complete with the ship's role or an extract from it.
There are countries where a mandatory visa requirement is to have a health insurance policy. Armenia is not one of them. However, going on a tour without health insurance is, at a minimum, not responsible. And we are talking not only about saving money, but about receiving timely help if health problems arise while staying in a foreign country.
If you have a health insurance policy, you just need to call an assistance company in Armenia, and not look for a medical institution yourself, pay for services, etc. You can find an acceptable insurance option on the Cherehapa online insurance website. To do this, just follow a few simple steps: write the country and time of travel, select an insurance company from the list provided, click “buy” and fill out your personal information, pay, receive the finished document by email and print it.
The Cherehapa online service is a modern, fast, reliable and convenient way to get health insurance for traveling abroad. The electronic policy is valid in all countries of the world.
Documents for children
The child must have a foreign passport with him (an ordinary passport is also possible if the border will be crossed at the airport).
If a minor travels without parents, accompanied by a third party, then there must be a document certified by a notary indicating parental permission to take the child abroad. If the trip is carried out with one of the parents, then a similar document is needed from the second.
Documents for travelers by private car
To successfully pass the checkpoint, you should prepare the following documents:
- driver's license valid abroad;
- document confirming the official registration of the vehicle;
- power of attorney for the right to use, certified by a notary, if the driver is not the owner of the car.
Attention! You can enter from Georgia, but not from Azerbaijan and Turkey.
And since Georgians will not be allowed to cross the border with an internal Russian passport, they also need a foreign passport.
You should also be prepared to pay some fees. The road tax for the temporary import of a car with Russian license plates for 15 days is approximately 14 thousand drams, for 30 days – 20 thousand drams.
Due to the fact that Armenia is not a member country of the Green Card auto insurance system, and Russian compulsory motor liability insurance is not valid on the territory of the Armenian state, it is necessary to take out local compulsory motor liability insurance directly at the checkpoint. Its cost depends on the power of the car’s engine, the period for which the registration is carried out and ranges from 4-6 thousand drams.
Customs regulations
Armenia is part of the EAEU Customs Union (Eurasian Economic Union), therefore customs rules coincide with the uniform requirements for the import and export of goods for all countries participating in the Agreement. In addition, customs control at the airport does not apply to Russians, since Russia is also a member of the Customs Union.
Without additional costs for customs duties, you can freely transport:
- personal belongings, the total weight of which does not exceed 50 kg, and their value does not exceed 500 USD; 2 liters of alcohol, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars;
- medications for personal use;
- currency in the amount of 2000 USD (above this amount must be declared);
- hunting rifle and cartridges with permission from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia;
- copies of fine art with a limitation period of no more than 50 years, cultural objects - no more than 75 years. If the item is older, then a special permit is required from the Agency for the Preservation of Cultural Property of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia.
It is prohibited to import currency in the amount of more than 10,000 USD; in this case, it is recommended to use a bank money transfer service.
Prohibited categories also include: drugs, explosives, weapons, ammunition.
Entry denied
Residents of Russia are almost never denied entry to Armenia. However, for obvious reasons, this can happen if:
- no passport for travelers by land;
- the travel document is expired;
- the Russian is on the blacklist;
- the visitor is trying to smuggle prohibited goods across the border.
