Swiss resorts are fashionable and interesting. One of the documents that you will need to visit a country that is attractive in terms of tourism and relocation is a visa application form for Switzerland. It is a lengthy questionnaire that should be filled out very carefully. One mistake can cost you lost time and money to pay the consular fee.
Visa categories
- Tourist. The permit is issued on the basis of a trip to the country, air tickets and hotel reservations. Often, agencies independently issue this type of visa for the entire group traveling to Switzerland on vacation or a weekend. A tourist visa is one of the most common options.
- Business. This type is provided to businessmen and entrepreneurs who travel to Switzerland to negotiate or conclude contracts with foreign partners.
- Workers. Visas of this category are needed for specialists in in-demand professions who travel to Switzerland for paid work. Before registering the document, the employer must obtain permission from the Ministry of Labor to hire foreigners.
- Guests. The document is issued to migrants who travel to the country to visit relatives. A prerequisite for obtaining this permit is the presence of an invitation with personal data from the Swiss side. A visa to Switzerland by invitation is needed for those who wish to marry a citizen of this country.
- Transit. Short-term document for traveling to a third country through Switzerland.
- Student. Anyone who is enrolled in a university in the country can obtain such a visa. The validity period of the document depends on the duration of the training contract.
Entry rules
Foreigners, including Russians, have two options for crossing the Swiss border:
- on the basis of a Schengen visa with a current validity period;
- having received a Swiss visa in accordance with the established procedure.
In the first case, both a tourist and a category D visa from any country included in the Schengen area are suitable. Having a Schengen visa, its holder can either move around the country for the purpose of transit to third countries, or stay there for the period established by the Schengen agreement.
Entry on the basis of Visa Schengen is possible subject to the following rules:
- the visa was redeemed by first visiting the country that issued it;
- visiting the Alpine country is limited to a period of up to 3 months (depending on the corridor indicated in the visa stamp affixed to the passport).

List of documents
You can enter Switzerland with a Schengen visa only by submitting the following documents for consideration:

- A health insurance policy covering at least thirty thousand euros of expenses and valid in all Schengen countries.

Students and schoolchildren must attach certificates from their place of study.
Is it possible to enter Switzerland by private transport? Yes, but you must provide a route plan. The embassy will also be interested in the applicant's car certificates and driver's license.
Filling rules
The application form for a visa to Switzerland must be completed electronically in English, Swiss, or transliterated. Once completed, select a submission time and print a copy for yourself.
If a child (under 18 years of age) travels to Switzerland, the parents must fill out the form on his behalf (if the minor does not have a foreign passport).
Children with such a document are required to fill out even an electronic form themselves. But parents and guardians are not deprived of the right to control whether their child fills out the application for a visa to Switzerland correctly.
What other documents may be needed for a visa?
In addition to the above documents, accompanying documents are also attached to the application for a visa to England. These documents help the visa officer to better understand the applicant's situation and ultimately make the right choice. There is no single list of accompanying documents. The situation of each applicant is special in some way, each one attaches their own separate documents
Particular attention should be paid to selecting the optimal list of accompanying documents for a UK visa. Often the outcome of applying for a visa depends on them
Below is a list of documents that you should pay special attention to.
1 – Old foreign passports.
For British people, visa history is not the most important argument in deciding on a visa. Most often, a visa will be issued without any problems, even if you have not been abroad (provided that your financial documents are convincing). But the abundance of foreign trips demonstrates your financial wealth and ability to comply with visa regimes of other countries. If after each trip the applicant returns to Russia, then there is a high probability that this trip will also be only temporary.
2 – Marriage/Children Certificates.
If you are married or have minor children in your care, take copies of supporting documents. We need the most ordinary photocopies of the marriage/birth certificate. Copies of certificates do not need to be notarized. Documents stating that you have elderly parents as dependents do not play any role for the British: a different mentality. By the way, if you are married, you can provide a certificate from your spouse’s work, even if you are traveling alone.

3 – Documents from the place of study. If you are a student, it is advisable to attach documents from your educational institution to your visa application. The certificate is taken from the dean’s office and compiled according to the standard form of the university. You can attach a copy of your student ID and grade book to the certificate (subject to good academic performance - to show that there is no point in dropping out of school)
Please note that in 2021, the Embassy has a negative attitude towards long trips for students during their studies. In such situations, you should obtain a certificate stating that the trip has been approved by the university.
4 – Property documents.
Contrary to popular belief, property documents do not play a big role in issuing a visa. However, if any property is registered in your name, we recommend attaching supporting documents. For an apartment this is: a certificate of state registration of ownership or an extract of ownership from the Unified State Register of Real Estate; for a car: vehicle registration certificate. If nothing is registered against you, there is no need to worry about it. The deed to the property can be from your parents or spouse.
5 – Travel sponsor documents.
If you feel that your financial documents are not convincing enough, it is worth submitting documents from someone who can act as a sponsor. The sponsor can be a close relative: parents, spouse (including common-law). In addition to financial documents, a sponsorship letter from this person must be attached. Financial documents include a certificate of employment and an account statement. Note: civil marriage is recognized by the British, and it can be confirmed by joint trips abroad.
6 – Consent to travel from parents.
If a visa is issued for a minor child, then consent to leave Russia from the parents must be attached. If a child is traveling with one parent, permission from the other parent is required. If a child travels without parents, consent of both parents accompanied by a third party. Consent is provided in the form of a copy, the original remains with you. There is no need to notarize the copy. No other documents, including copies of parents’ passports, are attached to the consent.
7 – Covering letter. As you know, there is no interview to obtain a UK visa.
It is therefore important that the applicant's situation is made very clear. In case of any inaccuracies, the visa officer most likely will not call to clarify the information, but will prefer to simply refuse the visa
If you are concerned that the documents do not provide an accurate picture of your situation, it makes sense to include a short cover letter explaining certain aspects of the application. The letter is written in English.
Sample form
Let's start filling out the questionnaire.
- Sample of filling out a Schengen application form for Switzerland
- Official Schengen application form for Switzerland
paragraphs 1 and 3 in strict accordance with the foreign passport. There is no need to indicate a middle name.
Point 2 , as a rule, applies to girls who changed their last name upon marriage. Simply put, here you need to indicate all your previous surnames. If you have never changed your last name, we do not indicate anything (do not put dashes, the words “no” or “N/A”, etc.)
Point 4 . We indicate the date of birth in the “day-month-year” format.
Point 5 . We indicate the place of birth in strict accordance with the corresponding column of the foreign passport. If it is written, for example, “Moscow region,” you can write either “Moscow region” in Latin in full, or “Moscow region” in English - it doesn’t matter.
Point 6. We also look at the international passport. If it says USSR, then we write USSR.
Point 7. “Citizenship at the present time” - everything is clear here. “Citizenship at birth, if different” - for all those born before December 25, 1991, feel free to write “USSR.” If you were born after this date, then the item is completed. If you were born in a country other than the USSR or Russia, write your country of birth.
Step 8. Mark the gender.
- Männlich – male
- Weiblich – female
Item 9. Please indicate your marital status.
- Ledig – not married
- Verheiratet – married
- Getrennt – I am married, but live separately from my spouse
- Geschieden – divorced
- Verwitwet – widow (widower)
- Sonstiges (bitte nähere Angaben) – your own version
Item No. 10 must be completed only for minor children. Write down the details of the child’s legal representative; you also need to write the address of the legal representative if it differs from the minor’s place of residence.
Item 11. Residents of Russia do not fill in, since identification numbers are not assigned in our country.
Clause 12 . Please mark the passport you are traveling with.
- Normaler Pass - normal passport
- Diplomatenpass - diplomatic passport
- Dienstpass – service passport
- Amtlicher Pass - official passport
- Sonderpass – special passport
- Sonstiges Reisedokument (bitte nähere Angaben) – your own version
Clause 17 . We indicate the address of actual residence. This is the address where you live right now. This especially applies to those who are registered in another region of Russia, but rent an apartment in Moscow or the Moscow region.
Point 18. Non-Russians write the details of the document providing them with legal stay on the territory of the Russian Federation, Russians put “NEIN”.
Clause 19. Occupation, for example, “STUDENT” or “PENSIONER”.
Point 20. Indicate the name of the company you work for, as well as its contacts. Pensioners, unemployed people, students and children leave the column blank. The abbreviations LLC, OAO, ZAO are not translated, they are written like this: OOO, OAO, ZAO.
Item 21 - "SWITZERLAND".
Clause 23. The state of first entry is indicated. It is advisable that you have a reason to indicate Swiss territory.
Item 24. How many times do you expect to enter the country with the permit you receive? If there is a lot, oh, if twice - “Zweimalige”, once - “Einmalige”.
Clause 25. The number of days you plan to spend in Switzerland. Even if you stay in the country for just one minute during the day, it counts as a whole day.
Clause 26. Presence or absence of visas that were valid for the past 3 years. If there were none, indicate “NEIN”; if there were, indicate “JA”. In the second case, a fully completed item indicating the countries and dates of their visit is required. To avoid making mistakes, stick to the template.
Point 27. Has biometrics been successfully completed before?
Item 28. Fill in only if your goal is transit. The presence or absence of permission to visit the destination state is reported.
Point 29. Day, month, year when you enter the country.
Clause 30. When requesting a single-entry visa, indicate the departure date on the ticket.
When requesting a double or multiple entry visa, we strictly indicate the desired expiration date of the visa. In our case, we become impudent and ask for a visa for 5 years (this is the maximum for a Schengen visa). It is not forbidden to be impudent, however, there is no guarantee that we will be given a long-term Schengen visa. We decided to try our luck and requested a maximum visa - for 5 years.
Paragraph 31 . To be completed when requesting a tourist, visitor or transit visa. In this case, paragraph 32 does not need to be filled out. We indicate the hotel details: name, address, phone number. When requesting a guest visa, we indicate the name of the inviting person, address and telephone number.
Item 32. Fill in this column if an organization invites you to Switzerland. Indicate its name, address, telephone number, as well as the first and last name of the person responsible.
Clause 33. Data on the source of covering expenses. If it is the applicant himself, the first part is completed, if the sponsor is the second part. Study the sample form and mark everything that is relevant to you.
Item 34. To be completed by those who have relatives in the European Union.
Clause 35. Degree of relationship (continuation of clause 34).
Clause 36. Where documents are submitted and date of submission.
Clause 37. Signature of an adult applicant or parent (guardian) for minors.

Procedure for applying for a visa
Registration on the visa center website
Before directly submitting documents for a Swiss visa, you must go to the TLScontact Visa Center website. select a consular district, and then register an account on the website (personal account). Only under this condition can you fill out an application online, select the date and time of visiting the visa center or visa department of the Swiss Embassy in Moscow, or, in the case of sending documents by mail, pay the visa and service fees.
Rules for filling out the form online
Before starting work, you must select the type of visa in accordance with the main purpose of the trip (tourism, transit, visit to relatives, business visit, etc.). The visa application must only be completed online in English, German, French or Italian. After all fields are filled out, the form must be printed. If members of his family (parents, spouses, children) are traveling with the applicant, it is necessary to register them all in one group (that is, there is no need to create a separate account for each). The same applies to groups of people. traveling on the same route, but not related.
After the application is fully completed, the system will prompt you to select the date and time of your visit to the visa center or embassy. After this, a checklist is automatically generated indicating the necessary documents in accordance with the purpose of the visit and the age (criteria for children) of the applicant, as well as confirmation of the appointment time. These documents contain a barcode and must be printed and attached to the general package of documents.
If the applicant has chosen the option of sending documents by mail, after filling out the application form, forms for payment of fees via PayPal will be automatically generated. In order to make a payment, you must first link your bank card to PayPal, and then enter the necessary details in your account on the visa center website.
Methods for submitting documents
The visa department of the Swiss Embassy in Moscow accepts applications for long-term visas category D and residence permits. The Consulate General of Switzerland in St. Petersburg has stopped accepting documents for all types of visas, including long-term ones (they should only be applied for at the embassy in Moscow). At the same time, documents are accepted strictly by appointment, which can be done online, through an account on the Visa Center website or through a call center by phone: 8 (800) 100-6319.
At the moment, it is also possible to register in person directly at the visa department from Monday to Friday, from 11.15 to 11.45 or by fax (in this case, the applicant’s last and first name, number of people, telephone number and email address are indicated).
Applications for all types of category C visas must be submitted through TlScontact visa centers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don and Yekaterinburg.
The applicant can come to these centers in person and submit documents for a visa, and pay the visa and service fees there. Documents can be submitted independently, or through an authorized representative or an accredited travel agency (in this case, a notarized power of attorney from the passport holder and a copy of the page of his passport with personal data, the original and a copy of the courier’s passport are required). For close relatives (parents for minor children, spouses), documents can be submitted by family members if they have documents confirming the relationship.
In Vladivostok, Kazan, Krasnoyarsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Samara and Ufa, there are “drop-box” offices - branches of the DHL company that carry out courier delivery of documents to the main TLScontact visa center in Moscow. Employees of these offices do not accept payment for visas and do not check documents. Therefore, before submitting, you must pay all fees via PayPal online in your account on the Visa Application Center website.
Problems when working with the TLScontact visa center website and ways to solve them
If, after registering an account and activating it using a link sent to an email address, the applicant cannot access his personal account. The problem is that the page https://www2.tlscontact.com/ruMOW2ch/login.php states that in order to receive a list of documents and an appointment, you must click on the “submit” button. In fact, after clicking this button, the system automatically redirects the user to the new account registration form. In order to log into an already registered account, you must enter your email address and password in the form below (under the caption “I have already registered on the TLScontact visa center website and would like to track my application”).
Often the system does not allow you to log into your account using a password created and registered by the user. In this case, you must request a new password on the site. The automatically generated password should be saved and not changed - otherwise the system will again deny the applicant access to his personal account.
The online visa application system does not work if the applicant has browser versions earlier than Firefox 7.0, Google Chrome 15.0 or IE 7. The solution to this problem is to download the latest version of one of the specified browsers.
All information about visa fees is located in the “Frequently Asked Questions” section, subsection “General Questions”.
If the applicant has not found a clear answer to his question on the Visa Center website, he must contact the company’s call center by phone: 8 (800) 100-6319 from Monday to Friday, from 09.00 to 12.30 and from 13.30 to 18.00. This service is not available to all those who call from abroad or through Skype and similar programs. If the call center does not respond, a complaint about its work, as well as questions regarding documents and regulations of the Visa Center, can be submitted in your personal account by filling out the feedback form.
Visa processing time
The processing time for visa applications is 5 days, including the day of submission. Additionally, it may take 2-3 days to deliver documents to the consulate and back.
Visa validity period
A short-term single-entry visa of category C gives the right to stay in Schengen countries for up to 90 days, double-entry and multiple-entry visas - up to 90 days within every 180 days. In practice, the validity of the visa and the specific number of days of stay are determined in accordance with the dates specified in the invitation or confirmation of hotel reservation.
To correctly count days, you need to use the Schengen stay calculator (short-stay calculator) on the website of the EU Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Visa cost
The cost of a short-term visa consists of the visa fee and the visa center service fee.
The visa fee for all types of short-term Schengen visas for applicants over 6 years of age is 35 euros. Children under six years of age are exempt from paying the visa fee.
When submitting applications at Visa Centers, the fee is paid in rubles (1,760 rubles) at the center's cash desk. An additional service fee of 1115 rubles (22 euros at the exchange rate of the Swiss Embassy) is paid. Children under 6 years of age are also exempt from this fee. When submitting applications, visa fees are paid in rubles at the cash desks of visa centers; when submitting applications through drop-box offices, fees are paid through PayPal, to which you must “link” your bank card in advance. Payment is made through your personal account on the Visa Application Center website in accordance with automatic instructions. When submitting an application by mail, you must also pay for DHL services for delivering documents to the office in Moscow and back to the applicant.
In case of visa refusal, fees are non-refundable.
Valid visa in canceled passport
It is allowed to enter the country with a valid visa in a canceled international passport and a new international passport without a visa (provided that the data of the document holder completely coincides in the passports and visa) in the following cases:
– illness or death of a relative located in Switzerland
— the need for urgent treatment in Switzerland.
In all other cases, you need to apply for a new visa in a new passport or transfer a valid Swiss visa to a new passport.
Appealing a visa refusal
If a visa is refused, the applicant will receive a corresponding letter along with the passport indicating the reason for the refusal. Based on this, he has the right, within 30 days from the date of receipt, to submit a letter of appeal in German, French or Italian (or in Russian with a translation into one of these languages) to the visa department of the Embassy in Moscow and make a payment for consideration of the case in 150 CHF (
$169.5) - the fee is paid in rubles at the ticket office of the visa department. If necessary, documents proving the applicant’s position must be attached to the application. Appeals are reviewed by the Swiss Federal Office for Migration (BFM).
