Brief information
Germany is a European country visited by a significant number of tourists. Regardless of the purpose of travel (tourism, guests, festival, treatment, education, moving to permanent residence), you must apply for a visa by collecting a certain list of documents for this.
Since Germany is one of the countries of the Schengen zone, to enter the country you need to apply for a Schengen visa. For several years, the rules for obtaining a German visa have not changed.
There are several options for obtaining such a permit, but we recommend applying for a German visa through visa centers (in the Russian Federation they are located in several large cities). Germany also has a national visa, which can be obtained at the Consulate General or at the Moscow Embassy of the country in the Russian Federation.
How can a Russian citizen apply for a visa to Germany on his own in 2021?
You can apply for a visa to Germany through:
- visa centers are legal intermediaries whose cooperation with German embassy and consular offices has long been established;
- German diplomatic missions in the Russian Federation;
- our company.
Since 2015, when applying for a visa to Germany, you need to be fingerprinted and photographed with a special camera. To do this, the visa applicant must come to the visa center or diplomatic mission in person.
Biometric data is submitted once every 5 years. Children under 12 years of age are exempt from this procedure. If less than 5 years have passed since your biometric data was collected for a Schengen visa, then you do not need to come in person to submit documents - this can be done through legal representatives.
Applying for a visa to Germany through visa centers
Most often, Russian citizens receive German Schengen visas through visa centers. The sequence of actions in this case is as follows:
- Determine the type of visa you need depending on the duration and purpose of your trip.
- Study the instructions for submitting documents on the website of the visa center of your choice.
- Collect all documents from the list on the website.
- Make an appointment through the visa center website.
- Arrive at the visa center at the specified time.
- Submit biometric data.
- Pay the consular fee and attach a document confirming its payment to the package of documents.
- Submit the package of documents you have prepared. The coupon that you will be given will indicate when you can receive your passport with a visa to Germany.
To receive a passport with a visa, you do not need to make another appointment through the visa center website. Such German visa centers, operated by Visa Facilitation Services Global, which serves diplomatic missions around the world, are located in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Saratov, Samara, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod and other large Russian cities. You can track the readiness of your visa directly on the visa center website using your application number, which must be entered in a special window. During business hours, you will have to come to this office, present a coupon and receive your passport.
Applying for a visa through German diplomatic missions
If you need a national D visa, you need to apply for it at one of the German Consulates General in Russia, which are located in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk. A Schengen visa can also be obtained through diplomatic missions (this is most often done by those who were refused a visa when submitting documents through a visa center).
You must make an appointment at the Consulate General through the visa center. In this case, you will need to choose a time convenient for you from the available options. You can't be late.
Applying for a visa through our company
You can apply for a Schengen visa to Germany with the help of our company. This is done as follows:

Entering Germany with a visa from another country
village in Germany
There is no need to apply for a German visa for travelers who have a stamp in their passport indicating that they have received a Schengen visa from another country.
According to existing rules, such travelers have the right to free movement throughout the European Union.
There are certain nuances regarding visiting with a Schengen visa issued by another country. First you need to visit the country that issued the entry permit, spend a certain number of days on its territory, and only then go to Germany.
Visa options
Depending on the purpose of the trip (business trip, trip to friends or relatives, tourism, conference, shopping, symposium, etc.), you must apply for one of the options for a German visa.
You can do this yourself by contacting one of the twenty visa centers (there are similar institutions in twenty major Russian cities).
In Germany, there is a clear division into consular districts, so the package of documents is submitted at the visa center closest to the place of registration of the applicant. For example, if a citizen is registered in the Leningrad region, and he does not have temporary registration in another locality of the Russian Federation, he submits documents in St. Petersburg.
Currently, there are two types of German entry documents:
- Schengen German visa category C (it is suitable for short-term visits to the country - no more than three months);
- national visa D (allows the holder to stay in the country for a longer period). The citizen carries out its registration independently by contacting German diplomatic missions in Russia
What is a German work visa and do I need one?
The German work visa is based on a residence permit system with different conditions depending on the specific application and situation. If you are a non-EU citizen (or from Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), you will need permission to live and work in Germany in the form of a work visa. This does not automatically allow you to travel and work in the rest of the EU.
Typically you need to apply before coming to Germany and wait a few months until everything is processed. You can read the general summary here.
The German Office for Foreigners, called Ausländerbehörde, distinguishes between general and specialized employment, as well as temporary employment (visiting scientist, au pair, internship), job search, freelance work and self-employment. Let's look at the first two categories in this post.
Schengen visa category C
This is the most popular option for permits to enter Germany. The holder of such a visa receives the right to stay in the country for up to three months. The document is suitable for tourist travel, as well as for visits to countries at the invitation of organizations, individuals, for treatment in one of the German clinics, for short-term training.
How to get a German C visa on your own? The package of documents required to obtain this permit has not changed for several years; it is regulated by EU directives and agreements.
Tourist visa
Many Russian citizens want to obtain a tourist visa in order to legally travel to interesting places in Germany. There are no difficulties in the algorithm of actions for opening a German tourist visa. Registration is carried out according to the same scheme as obtaining a permit for tourism purposes.
Visa centers located in Russia have built a simple and clear algorithm, so there is no point in spending additional material resources on the services of intermediary companies; it is quite possible to obtain a permit to enter Germany on your own. In addition to individual visas, visa centers issue permission to visit German cities in collective groups.
Transit visa
No citizen has the right to travel through German territory without a special transit visa. Even in cases where only a transit connection is intended at a German airport, passengers must show customs officials a valid entry permit to the country of final destination.
When transferring on German territory to a country with a visa-free regime, a transit visa is also required, since it involves moving from one terminal to another, that is, leaving the international zone.
National visa D
This entry permit varies in duration. The applicant is responsible for completing it independently. The package of documents is submitted to the Consulate General of the country or the German Embassy.
The document provides the owner with excellent opportunities:
- admission and study in German educational institutions;
- employment;
- moving to relatives for a long period;
- marriage
To become a national visa holder, you need to collect an impressive package of documents.
List of documents for visa
documents
The package depends on the purpose of travel to Germany. There is a division of all documents required to obtain permission to enter the country into two types:
- basic;
- additional
Documents of the first group are collected and submitted by all applicants, regardless of the purpose of the planned trip.
Additional documents are submitted in certain situations, depending on the purpose of the planned trip.
The main package of documents for obtaining a German visa:
- a visa application form filled out in accordance with all recommendations (you can fill it out on the visa center website, then simply print it out);
- original of a valid foreign passport (its expiration date must not be less than 90 days after leaving Germany);
- two color photographs (dimensions 35 mm by 45 mm);
- a photocopy of the double page of a foreign passport with personal information and photograph;
- a photocopy of all pages of the civil passport that contain any entries;
- booking tickets (or tickets) for one of several types of transport, which indicate the date of entry and date of departure from Germany;
- confirmation of hotel reservation or private accommodation with dates;
- an international insurance policy with a minimum amount of insurance coverage of 30,000 euros (insurance must be valid throughout the Schengen territory);
- original payment document confirming payment of the consular fee;
- documents that confirm the financial support of the applicant (an extract from a personal account, a certificate of salary from the place of work, a document confirming the availability of property, a letter from the sponsor who has taken over the financial support of the trip)
Documents for obtaining a work visa to Germany
One of the main stages of registration involves collecting a package of documents necessary to obtain a German employment visa. It includes:
- Application form. It is recommended to fill out in German. English is acceptable, but subject to translation and compliance with the requirements mentioned above.
- Notification with a signature about the study of the Law of the Federal Republic of Germany (paragraphs 53 and 54) on the presence of foreign citizens in the country.
- Photos (three). Must be done according to general visa rules. Two photographs are used for application forms, and the third is submitted separately.
- International passport and copies of pages with records.
- Internal passport. All pages with records are made, and if you have a residence permit in Russia, you need a copy of this document.
- Agreement with the employer or invitation. The following information is required: name, employer contacts, address, salary, time of employment, type of work, etc.
- Confirmation of language knowledge. This is not mandatory, but if you have it, the likelihood of obtaining a work visa to Germany increases.
- Confirmation of qualification level, indication of places of study, positions held with dates. Diplomas and certificates recognized in Germany are accepted. All documents must be translated, certified and apostilled. To ensure that your diploma is accepted in Germany, you can consult the ANABIN database. If a document does not have H++ status or does not have the Entspicht mark, an application must be submitted to ZAB for recognition of the paper.
- Insurance policy. It should work for at least the first three to four weeks. After this, the contract can be extended. Coverage amount from 30,000 €.
Additionally, consent to data processing, information about the availability of a place to stay, a receipt for payment of the full cost of a German work visa, etc. are required. The consulate has the right to expand the requirements for the package of documents. This nuance must be clarified in advance.
Trip by invitation
A visitor visa is issued in the following cases: traveling on a business trip, visiting relatives or friends.
First, invited citizens collect documents to obtain a main visa, and then several additional documents (depending on the purpose of travel by invitation).
The list of additional documents required to obtain a German visa upon invitation from a private individual includes:
- confirmation of place of residence (an original invitation from the guest is provided, which indicates the place of residence, as well as a copy of the invitation certified by a notary; a copy of the passport of the inviting German citizen, an official statement confirming the acceptance by the inviting person of obligations to financially support the trip);
- a photocopy of a document proving the legality of residence of the inviting party in Germany (identity document, copy of permit, residence permit)
For a work invitation, the original or a copy of the invitation from a German company is used as a mandatory additional document entitling the applicant to receive a German visa.
The document indicates the dates and purposes of the trip, and the person who will bear the financial expenses for the invited person. Without the signature of the responsible authorized person (manager) and the company seal, the document will be invalid.
A German visa by invitation for businessmen is issued only after the applicant proves his economic activity with the following documents:
- certificate in form 2NDFL/3NDFL;
- company registration certificate;
- bank statements
A German partner or company can act as the host for the visa. The full set of documents that will be required to obtain an entry permit can be viewed on the official website of the visa center.
- A national German visa category D will be required in order to legally reside in Germany for an extended period.
- The list of documents that need to be submitted to obtain a national visa depends on the purpose of the application. The holder of a national visa has the right to legal education, work, and residence with relatives.
- Even for short-term study or residence, a national document is required (the only exception is for programs that are agreed with the ZAV organization, for which it is possible to obtain a guest visa at the invitation of an educational organization).
To enroll in one of the higher educational institutions in Germany, Russian citizens also collect an impressive package of documents. In such situations, the questionnaire is filled out using a special form. Detailed information can be found on the website of German representative offices in the Russian Federation.
Question to the expert
Is it possible to enter Germany with a Schengen visa issued by another country?
Yes.
Carrying out self-employment activities
A visa for employment is issued only if there is a contract and a work permit from foreign migration authorities.
Unless the applicant has specific qualifications, their work visa will not be equivalent to a residence permit. Accordingly, it will have to be renewed every 6-12 months. Those who have previously worked in Germany are recommended to apply for a multiple work visa.
If two border crossings for entry and two for exit are sufficient to leave Germany for document renewal or personal purposes, this information must be indicated on the application form. This work visa is not considered a multiple-entry visa and is issued without unnecessary obstacles.

Photo requirements for a German visa
There are special requirements that must be fully met by the photograph pasted into the visa application form. The parameters that regulate these rules - ICAO:
- image size – 35 mm× 45 mm;
- the photograph must be taken against a light (almost white) background;
- the photograph shows only the applicant’s face, upper shoulders, and neck;

Applying for a German visa for a child
children
Often parents and children go on trips to the cities of Germany. There are situations when a child travels to a country without parents, accompanied by other persons (for example, with teachers on a tourist trip). What are the rules for obtaining a German visa for children?
According to the rules when applying for a German visa for minors, the following documents are required:
- a photocopy of the birth certificate of the minor for whom the visa is being issued (the original of this document is not required);
- consent (notarized power of attorney) for the child to travel outside the Russian Federation (a similar document must be submitted from each parent or legal representative). If one of the parents (or one of the guardians) goes on a trip with the child, then there is no need to provide a power of attorney from the second person;
- if a visa is issued for a child in a different period (not at the same time as the parents), in this case, copies of the parents’ Schengen visas must be included in the package of documents (you must also provide confirmation of booking tickets or a hotel, where the child’s last and first name is entered)
How to apply for a German visa yourself
There are no particular problems with obtaining a visa to Germany on your own. There are legal intermediaries (visa centers) who help resolve all the questions an applicant may have quite quickly.
Similar organizations have been opened in many large cities of Russia (“million-plus cities”), and over several years of work they have already developed a clear algorithm of actions (features of the procedure). Not only individual citizens, but also travel agencies apply to visa centers.
According to the new requirements that have been in force since 2015, independent registration of a German visa is carried out according to a new procedure. The rules state that the applicant himself is obliged to come to the visa center (or to the German mission) in order to submit his fingerprints, as well as to take photographs with a special camera.
After the applicant submits a package of documents and submits biometrics, the visa application procedure begins (fingerprints are taken once every five years). After the data has been submitted, a visa to Germany is issued without the personal participation of the applicant.
Children under twelve years of age do not need to take biometrics.

Submitting documents through the visa center
submission of documents
Many Russians prefer to apply for a visa to Germany at the visa center. In order to submit documents, you must follow a certain algorithm:
- choose the type of German visa;
- go to the official website of the visa center, carefully study all the information related to obtaining permission to enter Germany (read the instructions and rules);
- collect a package of documents according to the list;
- select an appointment time in the electronic queue and sign up for a visit to the visa center;
- show up with the collected package of documents on the appointed day and time;
- undergo biometrics (take fingerprints);
- according to the receipt issued by the visa center employee, pay the consular fee and provide the original receipt;
- submit documents and take a coupon (on presentation of the coupon you can receive a passport with a ready-made visa stamp)

To receive completed documents, you do not need to register again at the electronic reception of the visa center. You can arrive during office hours with a coupon and a civil passport, and receive a passport with a visa.
Am I eligible for a general work visa?
This is for those who want to live and work in Germany and need a residence permit for the purpose of employment. To obtain a work visa in Germany, you generally need approval from the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Office) in addition to the Ausländerbehörde.
To increase your chances of getting approved, you will first need to find a job in Germany. Ideally, this position is whitelisted; There is a shortage of qualified people for this profession in Germany.
How to find out if a German visa is ready
If you are applying for a document to enter Germany through a visa center, you can track information about readiness using your foreign passport.
By entering the international passport number recorded in the system on a special page of the visa center website, you can obtain information about the stage at which the application is currently at. As soon as information about the readiness of the visa appears, you can go to the visa center with a coupon and a civil passport and receive documents.
What should you pay attention to when filling out the visa application?
All information provided in the questionnaire must be reliable.
Can a C visa be refused?
Refusal is possible if false information is provided or if the package of documents is incomplete

Seaman visa
Many citizens of Ukraine who get a job as a seaman or those who already work as one, but are going to cross the water borders of Germany, are often worried about the following questions:
- where do they issue Schengen visas for seafarers?
- what type of visa do seafarers get?
- what is the cost of such a visa;
- Does a sailor need a visa to Germany at all?
A sailor will have to obtain a visa if he and his crew are going to cross the water borders of Germany, not to mention permanent work in one of the German ports. Depending on the purpose of your visit and type of activity, you can open:
- short-term visa category C for travel through Germany;
- long-term visa category D, which will allow you to carry out your work activities.
To obtain a visa, seafarers need documents. In addition to the main ones (foreign passport, copy of the passport of a citizen of Ukraine, application form and photographs), you will also need additional documents that must be submitted to the German consulate specifically for obtaining this type of visa. Such documents include:
- original/photocopy of the seaman's passport;
