According to Rosstat, in 2021 the average salary in St. Petersburg is 61.5 thousand rubles, which is 33.5% higher than the national value. The greatest income is received by those citizens who work in the field of mining, information and communications, as well as finance and insurance. However, a significant number of St. Petersburg residents work in the service sector, where the salary is below the average level.

Minimum salary in St. Petersburg

In the Russian Federation, the minimum wage - minimum wage - is established at the legislative level and is used to regulate the amount of wages. Employers do not have the right to assign their employees a salary below the critical value. The minimum wage is higher than the subsistence level, thus the state protects its citizens from unfair actions of employers.

Employers who violate this rule will pay a fine (Clause 6, Article 5.27 of the Administrative Code):

  • 1-5 thousand rubles for businessmen without forming a legal entity;
  • 10-20 thousand rubles for officials;
  • 30-50 thousand rubles for legal entities.

In St. Petersburg in 2021, there is a minimum salary of 18 thousand rubles, with the base value for Russia being 11,280 rubles. Organizations located in St. Petersburg and financed from the federal treasury are based on the all-Russian indicator, not the regional one.

Due to the crisis, St. Petersburg residents began to eat less

The experts chose the calculation method themselves: some were based on statistical data on the income of the population in St. Petersburg, others analyzed the rate of price growth, and some added up the costs of goods and services that cannot be avoided. As it turned out, the idea of a “good salary” is very ambiguous, but those surveyed agreed on one thing: for the same money in 2021 you can afford much less than in the past.

If we “spread out” all the annual expenses, including car depreciation, insurance, taxes, utilities and other obligatory payments, then in St. Petersburg each owner of a small separate apartment and an economy class car will have to pay at least 12 thousand rubles per month (150 euros) ). To this we add the need to replace seasonal clothing and shoes (5 thousand - 60 euros), medicines (2 thousand - 15 euros), minimal savings for a rainy day (from 5 thousand - 60 euros), expenses for gifts and holidays (from 5 thousand - 60 euros), then the total amount will be almost 350 euros. And you also need to somehow eat (from 8 thousand rubles, at least 100 euros). Total - 450 euros, if there is no need to pay a mortgage or other debts and do not allow yourself anything other than to ensure your livelihood.

According to Petrostat, over the past year, St. Petersburg residents have spent about 66.8% of their monthly income on necessary goods and services, including food and utility bills. Taking into account the average monthly salary in the city of 43.6 thousand rubles, this amounts to about 29 thousand rubles. On average, about half of the salary, about 17-19 thousand rubles, is spent on food, and food prices have increased in the city by about 34% in the last year alone. Since we are talking not only about survival, but about living for pleasure, taking into account delicacies and food in the city, the amount can be considered at 23 thousand rubles.

Recently, people are increasingly saving on non-essential goods in favor of food, leaving about 10-11 thousand for vacation and shopping; for a relatively comfortable life, this figure can be taken into account at the level of 15 thousand rubles. About 14.7% of St. Petersburg residents' income goes to mandatory payments and contributions: this share has increased from pre-crisis times by less than 10%, when the figure, due to lower prices and more affordable interest rates, was less than 13%. Taking into account the current level of wages, the average amount of payments is about 6.4 thousand rubles. When talking about a comfortable standard of living, one cannot ignore the maintenance of a personal car: on average, about 6.5 thousand rubles are spent by a car owner on gasoline.

However, maintenance and insurance for relatively new cars, taking into account keeping them in good condition, require large investments: in 2014, this figure averaged about 7.5 thousand rubles. Nowadays, not the newest foreign car can cost its owner an average of 10 thousand rubles in monthly format, if one-time annual costs are taken into account. As for housing, in a situation where a person prefers to rent an apartment, it can cost him an average of 20-24 thousand, if we talk about a one-room or small two-room apartment. Mortgage payments on medium-term loans remain at approximately the same level. Living in abundance presupposes the ability to save money for the future, and also, speaking of an employed person, for vacation. The amount of about 6.1 thousand rubles that the average St. Petersburg resident is now saving can be considered precisely as a “bonus” to vacation pay, if we are talking about holidays abroad, while savings for the future for a feeling of internal comfort and security can be taken at a level close to to 10 thousand rubles monthly.

In total, based on the totality of required expenses, a comfortable salary level can be estimated at approximately 98 thousand rubles. If we exclude the need to pay a mortgage or for rented housing, the amount is approximately 76 thousand rubles.

If we talk about the size of a comfortable salary for a metropolis resident, first of all we need to start not from the consumer basket (it can vary dramatically), but from the cost of living. In particular, in world and Russian practice, it is generally accepted that a comfortable level of expenses for rent or a mortgage is one that does not exceed 25-30% of the salary. In St. Petersburg, the average cost of renting an equipped and furnished one-room apartment is 20-25 thousand rubles per month. Mortgage payments on it will be, accordingly, somewhere around 30-35 thousand rubles per month. Thus, a comfortable level of income for living in a metropolis is in the range of 80-120 thousand rubles.

Average salary in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is an important center of economic life in Russia, which is home to many large, medium and small enterprises, organizations, institutions, etc. It is home to 5.4 million people and has a very low unemployment rate of 1.4%. This city is famous for its developed industrial production, advanced infrastructure, progressive financial activities, high potential in science, tourism, etc.

Thanks to this, the average salary here is 33.5% higher than the all-Russian one, but 47.8% lower than the Moscow one. It is also inferior to those regions where oil and gas are produced. According to Rosstat, over the past five years, the average monthly income of St. Petersburg residents has increased by more than 17 thousand rubles.

When calculating the average salary, Rosstat employees use official information on the “white” income of the population. These are the amounts on which the employee and employer pay taxes and fees. Due to the fact that many people receive “dirty” wages, the real situation on the labor market is somewhat different.

Since the reporting period has not yet ended, it is impossible to judge what the real increase in income of the employed population will be in 2021. According to Rosstat, employers most actively increase salaries for their employees in October-December.

In 2021, the average salary in St. Petersburg exceeded the same figure in the Northwestern Federal District by 19.7%. This ratio was also observed in the period from 2015 to 2021.

What is the average salary enough for?

To assess the standard of living in a region, it is not enough to know the average salary; you must understand what the money received is enough for. According to basic data, the cost of a minimum set of food products in St. Petersburg in August is 5,065.2 rubles, which is 20% higher than in the Russian Federation. Based on this value, you can spend no more than 168.8 rubles on food per day.

The size of the consumer basket, which includes a certain amount of food and non-food products, basic services, is equal to 16,500 rubles. Monthly ticket - 2900 rubles. The cost of a basic VHI policy, if necessary, will cost 14,000 rubles. per month. For-profit healthcare providers charge high bills for services provided.

Official statistics show that 85% of income is spent on purchasing goods and paying for services. Thus, the average salary is only enough to satisfy basic human needs. For visitors, the cost of renting housing is added to the main expenses. After all the necessary expenses have been made, there is no extra money left. A family of two people with an average level of consumption without the cost of housing in St. Petersburg will need 52.8 thousand rubles.

Wages in the represented industries are growing rapidly. This is primarily due to the fact that there is high competition for employees in the labor market. In the struggle for talent, employers are buying up valuable specialists.

Top 3 lowest paying industries

According to Rosstat, the service sector and agriculture are the least profitable sectors of the economy for workers. Here, the salary level of employees is 50-60% of the average salary in St. Petersburg. It is also 20-30% lower than the national average.

Today in the labor market of St. Petersburg there is a high supply in low-paid industries. This is due to low demand for minimum wage jobs.

Salaries within an industry vary greatly. Its size is influenced by factors such as:

  • professionalism and work experience of the applicant for the vacant position;
  • scale and nationality of the organization;
  • position, etc.

For example, an experienced doctor has a salary of 100 thousand rubles, and an orderly - 18 thousand rubles. The average figure will be 59 thousand rubles.

Differences by profession

Persons wishing to live and work in St. Petersburg must carefully approach the issue of choosing a profession. It is important to understand which jobs today bring the maximum and minimum income.

Prospects for salary growth

Who can count on a salary increase in the future? The incomes of specialists in the field of IT and high technology are increasing most significantly. Moreover, this situation is typical not only for St. Petersburg, but also for the country as a whole.

Experts note that the income of IT specialists increased by an average of 10%, while for other industries it increased by only 4-7%. This is explained by the fact that the demand for such employees is increasing and has not yet reached its peak, therefore, employers interested in attracting professionals will use various tools, including material motivation.

In other areas, wage growth is slow. Experts highlight a trend such as point indexing - rewarding those employees who turned out to be the most effective and brought great benefit to the company.

For example, a group of specialists worked on a common project, but they will increase the salaries only of those whose contribution was the greatest. This does not take into account the professional affiliation or specialty of distinguished employees.

Salaries for employees with digital skills will also increase. If you are planning to master a new promising profession, pay attention to this area of activity.

According to analytical data provided by hh.ru, income for DevOps vacancies is 5.5 times higher than the average salary in Russia. According to experts in the field of recruiting, for specialties in the field of cloud technologies the proposed income is 5.3 times higher than the usual average salary in countries, for Big Data - 3.8 times, neural networks - 2.9 times, Blockchain and Machine Learning - 2.7, Artificial Intelligence - 2.5 times, Data Science - 2.4 times.

Experts believe that we should not expect major changes in the labor market in St. Petersburg this year. At the same time, the possibility of both improvement and deterioration of the situation cannot be excluded. It is planned to raise the level of wages for St. Petersburg residents involved in the public sector by 5% of their salary.
