Applying for a multiple-entry Schengen visa to Germany in 2021

What is a multiple visa (Schengen) to Germany

Since Germany is part of the Schengen zone, a single EU visa (type C) is issued for a short stay on its territory. These permits are obtained for the purpose of tourism, private and business visits, for treatment and short-term training, for participation in various events, and so on, but not for permanent residence or employment.

According to the rules, a Schengen visa must be issued by the country in which the tourist plans to spend the most time, but it can also be used to travel to other countries of the Agreement. This rule must be strictly observed so that there are no problems with obtaining permits in the future.

For example, entry into Germany with a Greek multiple entry visa is possible, but you may not stay there for long. And punctual Germans will definitely ask what you intend to do in their country.

By the way, if you do not have sufficient grounds to visit Germany (or they thought so) or you seemed to them a suspicious person, then you may not be allowed into the country. A visa does not guarantee successful border crossing, but it’s still impossible without it.

The maximum number of days that a tourist can spend in Europe in any six months is indicated on the visa stamp. However, the number of days of stay cannot exceed 90.

If a visa is intended for multiple trips, it is called a multiple visa. Such a multiple-entry permit can be issued for any period of up to 5 years ( there is no minimum validity period for multiple visas! ).

What is a multivisa

Such a mysterious word “multi-visa” must necessarily mean something very pleasant. This is actually true. The lucky holders of this mark in their international passport have the right to visit any country that has signed the Schengen Agreement multiple times, and there are no less than 26 such countries. Germany is one of them.

Important: a Schengen visa gives the right to visit all countries of the agreement, but it is issued by the country in which you plan to spend the longest period.

Thus, an Italian multivisa gives the right to a short visit to Germany, but if insufficient information is provided about the purpose of the visit or representatives of regulatory authorities have doubts about the sincerity of the tourist, he may be refused.

Important: a multiple visa gives the right, but does not guarantee permission to enter all countries of the agreement.

Multiple visa to Germany on your own

Let us remind you: a multiple visa to Germany is a permit document valid for all Schengen countries. It limits the maximum length of stay of a tourist in the Schengen area, but does not have a limit on the number of trips there.

Such a visa can have a corridor of up to 5 years, but even an annual multiple visa to Germany is a welcome catch for any tourist who independently applies to the consulate or CC.

Obtaining a multiple visa to Germany is possible only with an invitation from a resident of this country.

In the vast majority of cases, the inviting party is required to undertake obligations to support the guest during their stay in Germany.

Please note that when applying for a permit yourself, you will have to face a number of difficulties!

  • There are several German representative offices in the Russian Federation (in Moscow, Yekaterinburg, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Novosibirsk) and all of them have special requirements for documents. Reception at consulates is carried out only by appointment (online or by phone).
  • VCs in Germany accept documents without prior appointment. They must be issued in accordance with the internal rules of the supervising consulates. If you apply to the German CC, the visa processing time increases significantly.
  • All accompanying documents must be folded in the prescribed order. Without the complete set, the visa application cannot be started.
  • When applying to all German missions, except the consulate in Novosibirsk, you are required to fill out a visa application online.
  • If a multiple visa to Germany is requested for a year, the applicant must provide evidence of the need for regular trips to this country, as well as an impeccable package of documents. Just for the purpose of tourism, German multiple-entry visas are issued extremely rarely!
  • Only applicants who have several correctly used visas from the Agreement countries over the past 2 years can count on the issuance of a “multi-Schengen” visa from Germany.

A multiple visa (Schengen) to Germany is an extremely rare document. The Germans, unlike, for example, the Greeks or the Spaniards, are not so generous when issuing these permits.

They are known for their punctuality and caution, and the economy of this country is quite firmly on its feet to capture short-term benefits from the visits of dubious tourists. Therefore, they issue visas after a detailed verification of the applicant’s identity.

In addition, having a visa does not guarantee successful crossing of the Schengen zone.

The final decision is made by border control officers on site. So, entering Germany with a Schengen multiple entry visa from another state is quite problematic.

Documentation

To begin with, it should be noted that to obtain a multiple-entry visa, you will need to provide all the same documents that are needed for a regular one. In addition to them, you will have to provide an invitation from a university, company or relative. The visa center and consulate put forward a number of requirements for these invitations.

The company or educational institution must have state-recognized status. And an invitation from relatives or friends must be formalized. In addition, you will have to confirm the relationship with some documents. Friendship can be confirmed by photographs.

Most often, this state issues multiple-entry visas at the invitation of individuals and legal entities. In addition, property owners in Germany, car drivers, Russians participating in a German legal entity, and some other categories of persons can count on multiple-entry visas.

  • A multi-visa visitor visa is usually issued at the invitation of a relative permanently residing in Germany. This may be a citizen of this state or a holder of a residence permit in this country. The invitation is issued in German and contains information about the applicant, the inviter and the upcoming trips. A copy of the inviting person’s passport or other document certifying the legality of his residence in Germany must be attached. It is also better to attach a Verpflichtungserklarung - a document of commitment - to the letter.
  • Business multivisa. Germans most often issue business multivisas on the basis of an invitation from a German company or organization with which the invitee has established business ties. The invitation is drawn up on company letterhead and certified by the signature of the responsible person and seal. It is accompanied by an extract from the Trade Register and documentation confirming the existence of business contacts.

Validity period for a multi-visa to Germany

Schengen multiple-entry visas are issued for different periods. Contrary to popular misconception, a multiple entry visa is not long-term. Long-term permits only apply to national visas.

Moreover, there are cases where a multiple-entry visa was issued to an applicant for only a week, while single-entry permits are often issued for six months.

But most often, multiple-entry visas in EU countries are issued for a period of six months to 2 years (during this time the traveler is provided with a so-called “visa corridor”): during this time you can travel to the Schengen zone as often as you like, but the total period of stay in the EU should not exceed that indicated in the document.

For example, a multiple visa (Schengen) to Germany for a period of 90/180 means that you can stay in this country for exactly 90 days within six months. And how many times you go there, 2 or 10, doesn’t matter.

Germany is not one of the states that show a very loyal attitude towards Russian citizens, therefore multiple-entry visas are issued to our compatriots selectively, and their validity periods are quite short. The most common option is a multi-visa for a year to Germany.

Validity

A distinctive feature of a multiple visa is its long validity period, during which it is possible to cross the border multiple times. So how long does a visa to Germany last?

This visa differs in the length of the period for which it is given to the traveler. The maximum period of its validity is 5 years; there is no minimum period as such, and, as a rule, it is 2 years. Such a long-term visa to Germany, of course, does not give the right to continuously stay on its territory for all 2 years; rather, this is the period of time when the Germans are ready to let a tourist into their territory. The duration of a single stay is also limited by the visa issued, usually 90 days.
