German medicine is known far beyond the country's borders. Highly qualified specialists who annually train abroad work on modern equipment, which ensures the high efficiency of treatment. However, is this the only issue? It would be logical to assume that the salaries of doctors in Germany are the “carrot” that spurs them on much better than the Russian “stick”.
Some international medical statistics
It is a generally accepted fact that the profession of an anesthesiologist is the most prestigious and highly paid. In some regions of the world, the average salary of this specialist exceeds 160 thousand euros per year. Gynecologists are in second place, followed by surgeons, and then dentists.
Why do doctors working in Germany complain about their salaries? And they don’t just babble among themselves, but are openly indignant, running to work in Switzerland, the UK and the Netherlands. It turns out that it is the Federal Republic that is the weak link in international medical and economic statistics? It turns out that the salaries of doctors in Germany are an order of magnitude lower than in other European countries? Is it really?

What is net profit?
Just the other day, all German media unanimously declared that the “net” (not average) salary of a doctor in Germany fluctuates around 5,500 euros per month. Is it a lot or a little? It is clear that for a Russian specialist this is a cosmic sum. But how are things going with the German medical luminaries?
To understand how well a doctor earns in Germany, you should compare two concepts: net profit and the net income of the average German family, excluding benefits. Using simple mathematical calculations, it can be calculated that the salary of an ordinary German family is almost 2,900 euros, which is half the income of a medical worker.
It is impossible to say that these statistics are reliable. After all, the income of a person with a secondary education is taken into account and compared with the income of a person who has a prestigious higher education. To understand what the salaries of doctors are in Germany, it is necessary to compare the incomes of specialists in related professions.
Dependence of income on specialty
Profession is the main criterion for the level of remuneration.
Higher education in Germany does not guarantee a high salary. But in general, compared to other groups of workers, on average, university graduates earn more.
If German students chose their future profession solely based on income, the choice would be obvious - engineer, doctor or lawyer.

Doctors in Germany earn more than 5,700 per month
Statistics do not allow one to get an accurate picture of income above 5,700 €, since they are collected based on the amount of pension contributions, which grow only up to a certain limit, and then remain fixed.
In addition to the above professions, company managers and other managers could get to the top positions, but there the connection with the specialty in the diploma is not so obvious.
Linguists and sociologists earn worse than other holders of higher education in Germany. The problem for linguists is the large number of applicants: for every open vacancy there are 25 unemployed.
The size of wages does not always determine supply and demand. Yes, in the industrial sector the lack of specialists has a positive impact on workers’ incomes, but in the civil service the situation is different.
For example, the situation with social workers. They can often only find a position in the civil service, with an average salary of €3,750 gross. At the same time, due to the influx of refugees in Germany, for every 100 unemployed people with a degree in social sciences, there are 92 vacancies.
Professions that do not require higher education
To receive a decent salary in Germany, it is not at all necessary to have a university diploma. Statistics show that among professions that require secondary education, there are enough that allow you to earn at the level of higher education holders.
And here there are clear leaders - this applies primarily to aviation.
A clerk in a bank or a manager for working with important clients in a German trading company receives an average bachelor's degree in the first 3 years after graduation.

Average, minimum and maximum living standards in Germany
The average salary of citizens of the Federal Republic is 2,800 euros (as of 2021). This applies to general indicators, excluding tax deductions and other mandatory payments. It is important to consider here that German taxes are an extremely delicate thing. The percentage of income tax directly depends on the amount of income, social status, marital status and some other points. It is for this reason that many qualified professionals complain that taxes often eat up half of their earnings. Needless to say, this takes a toll on the family budget.
On average, Germans pay the state about 20-25% of their income monthly. It is clear that not everyone is forced to pay high taxes. For example, the average salary of a hairdresser is just over 1,000 euros. Accordingly, he pays less tax.
A salary exceeding 6 thousand euros is considered high and prestigious. People with such earnings are considered to be the elite. Since 2021, a single minimum wage of 1,500 euros has been in effect throughout the state.
ENT doctor salary – Place 9
The income of a private ENT praxis is about 35.333 € per month
In addition to consulting patients, the ENT doctor conducts allergy tests, audiometry and other diagnostic methods in his parataxis. Some ENT specialists specialize in one thing. For example, in phoniatrics. Depending on the specialization, the income of lors varies.
The average income of a doctor-owner is 12,300€ ; ≈7,134€ remains after deducting taxes and mandatory social contributions
What determines the salaries of doctors in Germany?
The amount of monthly earnings may vary depending on the region, location of the clinic and its profile. For example, specialists in rehabilitation centers earn an order of magnitude less than their colleagues working in the medical field. A young specialist with no work experience can count on a salary of just over 4,000 euros. Of this, 25-30% will have to be given to the state, another 10-15% to pay for utilities and other mandatory payments. Taking into account all deductions, the young specialist remains “net” 2,500 euros. But that’s not all.
As a rule, wages are raised annually in Germany. A medical specialist who has just received his education cannot claim a high income. However, after 6 years of practice, his qualifications are equivalent to the highest category. Accordingly, the income level increases to 9,000 euros.
It is difficult to answer the question of what the average salary of doctors in Germany is, since much also depends on the doctor’s specialization.
Salaries of ordinary medical specialists (German: Facharzt) in Germany in 2021:
Attention! Experience is calculated from the moment you receive the Facharzt certificate
- Basic tariff - 6196.32 Euros before taxes (approximately 3593 € in hand)
- 1 year of experience - 6715.85 Euros before taxes (approximately 3894 € in hand)
- 2 years of experience - 7172.03 Euros before taxes (approximately 4160€ in hand)
- 3 years of experience - 7438.15 Euros before taxes (approximately 4314 € in hand)
- 4 years of experience - 7697.88 Euros before taxes (approximately 4465 € in hand)
- 5 years or more - 7957.64 Euros before taxes (approximately 4615 € in hand)
Just like for medical assistants, there are payments for duty, but most often they are not high, because medical specialists are usually on duty by telephone. This means that they can come to the clinic in the shortest possible time if the assistant doctors cannot cope on their own. For example, if it is necessary to perform an emergency operation.
Salary of a doctor with administrative function (German: Oberarzt)
Doctors with administrative functions are not chief doctors or heads of departments. There is no exact alternative to such doctors in Russia. For example, if the cardiac surgery department has a cardiac surgeon who specializes in coronary artery bypass grafting, he may be assigned to Oberarzt for bypass surgery. Oberarztom can also be appointed as responsible for outpatient appointments. There can be a large number of directions and specializations. If a department has 20 doctors, approximately 5 of them will be Oberarzt in some area. Management often appoints doctors who are highly qualified specialists to this position in order to keep these doctors in the clinic.
The salary of a doctor with an administrative function (Oberarzt) in a German clinic can be set according to a tariff, or maybe by agreement. Most often, doctors at this level, when working in the same clinic, but in different specialties, have the same salary.
A German Oberarzt, as a doctor with an administrative function, earns on average 8,500 euros, of which he receives approximately 5,000 euros after deducting taxes and mandatory social payments
How much does a doctor head of a department earn in Germany?
The salary of a department manager (German: Chefarzt) varies greatly in Germany. It depends on the number of beds in the clinic, the level of the clinic, and the economic indicators of the department. For Chefarzt, the standard salary is considered to be a base part and a bonus depending on performance indicators. Although calculating salaries is difficult, we can provide average values.
The manager's salary ranges from 11,250 to 37,500 euros per month. Eminent professors at university hospitals can earn even more. However, do not forget that of these amounts you need to pay about 42% of deductions and taxes.
Interesting fact
The average salary of a department manager (German: Chefarzt) in Germany is 20,560 Euros, which after taxes is approximately 11,800 Euros.
The chart above shows the average salary of a Chefarzt (per year) with 5 to 10 years of experience in this position, as well as the upper and lower quartels. This means that 25% of managers receive less than 177,437 euros, and another 25% receive more than 339,964 euros per year of work.
How much does a chief physician earn in Germany?
In German clinics, the chief physician (German: Ärztlicher Direktor) is not the head of the entire clinic. The Russian equivalent of the German chief physician is the head of the medical department. This is the highest medical position in the clinic. Administrative issues are handled by the brilliant director of the clinic. CEO is not a doctor's position. The director's salary is usually 15-20% lower than the chief physician.
The salary of the chief physician (German: Ärztlicher Direktor) in a large clinic is only slightly higher or the same as the salary of the head of department (German: Chefarzt). In small medical centers, where there is a position of chief physician, but there are no heads of departments, the chief physician pays about 8,000 euros, which is comparable to the salary of a doctor with administrative functions (German: Oberarzt)
How much does a German doctor earn in private practice (Praxis)?
Doctors who work in their own clinic are not only doctors, but also entrepreneurs. This means that their income can vary greatly and depend on many factors. However, most doctors from private practices receive money from health insurance, an analogue of the Russian compulsory medical insurance. At the same time, insurance companies set their own limits of deductions and quotas, thereby regulating the flow of money to the clinic. Such income regulations allow us to obtain average incomes in each specialty. In this case, we are talking about the income of the doctor-owner of the paraxis, and not of hired specialists.
We have prepared the TOP 12 medical specialties for earning money in private practice.

The most in-demand professions
Today, Germany is in dire need of medical specialists. Private and public clinics are looking for qualified employees. The Federal Republic is doing everything possible to attract as many foreign specialists as possible. Thus, graduates of Russian and Belarusian universities are valued. It is clear that these are real graduates, and not those who acquired their diploma during the transition.
Among the variety of medical profiles, specialists in the following areas are most likely to get a job in Germany:
- anesthesiologists;
- therapists;
- gynecologists;
- family doctors;
- psychiatrists;
- neurologists.
If you consider that the salary of a gynecologist in Germany is much higher than what our domestic specialist receives, then you shouldn’t be surprised why the highest minds are flowing to Europe.
How to get a job?
You will have to go through a number of bureaucratic procedures. Whether it is worth it or not is a personal matter. But as migration practice shows, not many are eager to return to Russia. One diploma will not be enough. You need to obtain another similar document, only of an international standard. It is advisable to study a foreign language at this stage. And not superficially, but in depth - with the involvement of a tutor and speaking practice.
In addition, you need to obtain a visa with the right to further employment. Register with the government departments of the Federal Republic, as well as find a potential employer who will agree to hire a foreign specialist, taking into account the time required for internship.
If everything is done promptly and punctures are eliminated at each stage, then in one and a half to two years you can admire the view of the Rhine from the window of your own office in a prestigious clinic.
Advantages and prospects
Many who are thinking about international medical practice and working abroad know that the salary of a surgeon in Germany is much higher than that of a domestic specialist. However, income level is not the only positive side. Besides:
- decent standard of living;
- the opportunity to move with the whole family;
- equal powers with other German specialists;
- the opportunity to gain invaluable medical experience and internship outside Germany;
- social guarantees.
You've probably wondered why the Federal Republic is trying to attract as many qualified specialists as possible by any means possible. The fact is that Germany is one of the “aging” countries. More than 40% of medical specialists have crossed the age of 50. That is why good medical education and work experience are so valued in the country.
Average salaries in Germany for the most in-demand professions
Since March 2021, the Law on Immigration of Skilled Workers has been in force; its development was initiated by the German Government to improve the labor market. Due to the reduced activity of native Germans, the goal was voiced to fill vacant positions with specialists from developing countries, and thereby resolve pressing issues with legal immigration.
Priority is given to specialists from Brazil, India, Asia, in addition, Germany is always open to Russians and Ukrainians. This law not only states that the European state is ready to accept professionals from non-CIS countries, but also simplifies the conditions. Strict selection criteria for diploma recognition and German language level are removed, and there are no barriers to the visa in the form of competitors from the EU. This is a great opportunity for potential immigrants. At the same time, it is worth finding out in advance by profession how much they will pay.

Doctor's salary
The list of the most in-demand professions includes doctors, dentists, nursing home nurses, and nursing home nurses. German healthcare is one of the best; it is financed from the state budget by €288 billion per year, with €3,500 per citizen.
Working in the medical industry is very prestigious; the equivalent of good qualifications is a high salary. Middle-skilled workers receive a median income of €5,110-16,500 per month, the highest income for specialized doctors is €18,000 and above. Well, the highest salaries are for surgeons, they can reach up to €52,600 per month.

Average engineer salary
Over the course of a decade, the specialty of an engineer has been included in the top world professions. Designers, builders, and estimators are needed everywhere. German employers are on the same list, they are willing to pay decent salaries to good workers in this field. Even the state contributes - it opens more and more technical faculties, increases the number of students in engineering specialties, and attracts women to study.
The lowest salaries for engineers range from €4,000, the average for specialists at large factories is from €10,000-14,000. In 2021 and 2021, the most common professions include:
Engineer: | Before tax | After tax | ||

By German standards, engineers' fees are average, but when compared with Russian ones, they are quite high. It is worth mentioning here that the requirements are not simple; engineering education, work experience, and, in addition, advanced training certificates are important. Foreigners are required to know the German language, at least at a basic level. According to the data in the previous table, tariffs can be calculated:
Criteria: | At one o'clock | In Week | Per month | In year |
Average salary of a specialist | €60 | €2 918 | €11 675 | €140 100 |
Teacher's salary
The salary of a teacher depends on length of service, gender, and location. In large cities: Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, the salaries of primary and high school teachers reach 7,000 euros or 12,000 euros. In smaller cities the median is between 3600 and 5500 euros. If we take the sum of teachers in the country, then almost half of them receive average, and the same part is slightly higher.
School education is strictly controlled by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. First of all, strict rules are established for both teachers and students; any absence without official certificates faces fines of €500-1500. The costs are quite high for parents, which is why German children are raised very strictly.
University teachers have the highest salaries, and this is evidenced by the following data in the table:
Teacher: | At one o'clock | In Week | Per month | In year |
– in business administration | €58 | €2 800 | €11 200 | €134 400 |
– in economics | €100 | €4 800 | €19 200 | €230 400 |

Driver salary
International and domestic transportation is one of the main directions of the German economy. There are many freight forwarding companies open on its territory that regularly require drivers. Many Russians find work as truck drivers, delivery drivers, and couriers. Their rewards depend primarily on the distance of delivery; the further the customer, the more the trucker receives. The average size ranges from €7870-11600. Drivers making deliveries across regions receive less, around €5,050. The most important factor for a high income is experience and a driver's license of the required category.
Bus drivers can expect an average salary in the range of €4,500-10,300, with a minimum of €2,990. It depends on the region and route. Since public transport is well developed in the country, city and intercity buses, school and service buses operate. The size of the salary is influenced by experience; at the level of 10-15 years, tariffs are 22% higher than for persons with 5 years of experience.
In large German cities, taxi drivers earn well; they are usually on the staff of a transport company; their income can reach €8,000-9,000. The smallest salaries are set in the range of €2710-5580. Also, a large number of business partners regularly come to Germany and escorts are assigned for their meetings. Drivers with good knowledge of the international language are hired, for whom the highest remunerations are set.
If the gross salary of drivers is in the range of €4500-11600, then the net salary is €2700-6500, almost half less, which means paying taxes in the range of 30-45%.
Welder salary in Germany
There are a large number of factories in Germany that require welders, gas cutters, milling operators, riveters, soldering operators, pipe installation and metal processing workers. The rate for one hour of such specialists is 12.70-15.99 euros - in rubles 1027-1294. The average monthly salary of experienced workers ranges from 2950-6420 euros, of which 34% will go to taxes.
Russian specialists quite often leave to work in German, Polish, and Czech cities. Employers post vacancy announcements on special forums or websites. If one of them is interested, the company issues the appropriate permit, and a work visa is issued according to it. The main requirements for candidates are confirmation of qualifications and work experience.
Average programmer salary
Today it is impossible to imagine an unemployed programmer, because this profession is so in demand. Of course, supply is also growing in response to demand; more and more graduates are enrolled in the Faculty of Computer Science, who become system administrators, work as programmers in the office, or receive offers from leading corporations. Accordingly, the income range is highly unpredictable. To understand how much German programmers are paid per month, consider the average salaries in the table:

How to properly compose a folder of documents for employment in Germany
As paradoxical as it may sound, a doctor, while looking for a job, offers himself, his knowledge and qualifications as a “product” for one of the suitable clinics. And despite the fact that these criteria are fundamental, you must be able to correctly present information about yourself. According to statistics, most of the refusals during interviews were received precisely because of careless preparation of employment papers.
The package of necessary documents includes:
- summary;
- a written application for employment;
- a reliable list of doctoral skills;
- translation of diplomas;
- copy and translation of certificates, if any.
You can design a folder simply, or you can show your imagination and do everything beautifully and correctly, not forgetting to put a high-quality photo in it. It is worth noting that several people can apply for the same place, which is why you should take care of providing documents, paying enough attention to this issue. The next step after a suitable vacancy has been found in the job advertisement is to send an electronic application.
As a rule, documents are accepted in the HR department by people who do not always understand medicine.
This is precisely the reason why they do not have the right to make their own decisions regarding the employment of a particular specialist. They sort folders with applications by age category and specialty area and forward the documents to the head physician for review.
To move to Germany, you need to collect a complete package of necessary documents.
Video about how to get a job as a doctor in Germany.
There are no clear deadlines allocated for reviewing documents. As a rule, you have to wait two weeks for results, or a month at most. However, if a request remains unanswered for a long time, then the chances of getting a job are basically zero. In this case, it is better to be patient and wait for an answer, and if there is no answer, then you can remind yourself about yourself in about a month.
