Bilateral communications
Russia and Germany are the largest countries in Europe in terms of population.
Appropriate importance is attached to their bilateral connections. After an era of bloody conflicts and political contradictions, today they meet as equal partners in a merging Europe. The starting point for this fundamental change in bilateral relations is the joint contribution of the two states to ending the East-West conflict in 1989 and 1990. In Germany, they did not forget that the then leadership of the Soviet Union, led by Mikhail Gorbachev, did not interfere with the unification of Germany, but contributed to it.
Since then, despite differences in views and interests on certain issues, there has been broad fundamental agreement between the political, economic and cultural goals of the two countries. They both claim to share common core values and principles.
For both of them, security and stability in a united Europe, economic development within the framework of a market economy, freedom and prosperity for their citizens and intensive cultural exchange are important.
Russia is one of the few countries with which the German Federal Government regularly holds so-called “interstate high-level consultations,” i.e., ministerial-level meetings jointly chaired by the Federal Chancellor of Germany and the President of Russia.
Cost, validity and production of a German visa
The visa processing time will depend on its category. A Schengen visa is issued within 10 calendar days. A national visa application can be processed within 6-8 weeks. In this case, German authorities take part in the procedure. As for the validity period and cost of a stamp permitting entry and stay in the country, a more precise answer can be given here.
Please note that the cost of a German visa in 2021 is formed from the cost of visa center services and consular fees. If there is one tariff for Schengen in all EU countries, then the fee for a national visa depends on the specific state.
Document type | Cost (consular fee) in rubles | Validity periods |
Schengen type C | 2 480 | 6 months |
Schengen type C (urgent consideration) | 4 960
Schengen type C for children under 6 years old | For free
National type D | 4 250 | 12 months |
National type D for persons under 18 years of age | 2 130 |
It is noteworthy that the validity period of the document should be distinguished from the number of days of permitted stay. With a Schengen visa you can stay in Germany for no more than 90 days, but a type D document may allow you not to leave the country for 180 days.
Although, in addition to standard deadlines, there are also individual situations.
You will find detailed information about this in the article “Visa validity period”.

How to apply for a national visa
A national visa is an entry visa for the purpose of long-term stay within the framework of a specific purpose of stay provided for by law.
As a rule, its validity period is limited; in certain cases it is issued for one year. Depending on the purpose of your stay, after entry you will usually need to apply for an internal residence permit.
The German Embassy in Kyiv is authorized to issue visas for applicants living in Crimea. The German Embassy in Tbilisi is authorized to issue visas for applicants residing in Abkhazia (Georgia) and South Ossetia (Georgia).
Please rely exclusively on information from German foreign missions. Contacting third party visa agencies is not a requirement for a successful application.
Collection of documents
If you plan to stay in Germany for a long time, you should start by collecting documents. The duration of the entire visa application process can vary greatly - from several working days to several months.
The procedure involves mandatory payment of a consular fee for a visa. Application forms and instructions are provided free of charge. No intermediary is required.
Filling out a visa application and collecting documents
To successfully submit your visa application, you must provide a complete set of documents during your first visit. Please prepare a visa application, passport photographs, your foreign passport, documents relevant to the purpose of your stay and funds to pay the consular fee.
The documents provided must be genuine and have proper content. Fake or false documents will result in visa denial. Misleading the consulate about the purpose of your stay also leads to a refusal to issue a visa.
Submitting documents does not guarantee the issuance of a visa. In some cases, additional documents may be required. Please do not send any documents to the Visa Section of the Embassy on your own initiative, especially before submitting your application.
These documents cannot be stored and/or processed by the Visa Office. Please provide a complete set of all required documents at the time of application. When subsequently submitting the required documents, please indicate the case number (the so-called barcode, which will be communicated to you when submitting documents), the surname and first name of the applicant.

Most Russian tourists choose the visa center in Yekaterinburg because of the pleasant atmosphere and the absence of a long wait in line (the applicant must arrive at a previously determined time), but the total cost of the visa will be higher due to an additional fee from the center.
The appointed time must be taken seriously. If the applicant is 10 minutes or more late, he will not be able to submit documents that day. Then you will need to repeat the procedure and a new time will be assigned.
Make an appointment
A pre-registration for submitting documents at the Visa Department of the relevant foreign mission at your place of usual residence can be made online through RK-Termin. Each applicant must make a separate appointment (for example, three appointments are required for a family of three).
German foreign missions in the Russian Federation are divided geographically into consular districts. The area of authority is determined solely according to the actual place of residence of the applicant. Information on consular districts and the respective consulates can be found in our general notes.
Registration
You must register to submit documents online in advance. You can submit documents for a Schengen visa directly to the German consulate in EKB or to one of the visa service offices in Germany: in Yekaterinburg, Ufa or Perm. But if we are talking about a national visa, then you need to apply exclusively to the consular office.
So, to register at the German consulate in Yekaterinburg, you need to follow the link and follow further instructions from the service.
Submitting an application
At a reception at a German foreign mission, personal attendance is required. Important information: It is prohibited to take mobile phones, computers, tablets, cameras, luggage, weapons, sharp and cutting objects, and liquids into the building of the Embassy and Consulate General.
Processing at the German foreign representation
The German foreign mission reviews and makes a decision on your case. Based on the submitted documents, the compliance of each case with legal grounds is verified.
Depending on the purpose of stay, the duration of this check can vary from several working days to several months, if the competent authorities for foreigners in Germany and/or the Federal Employment Agency are involved in it.
The processing period may also be extended if a more detailed check is necessary, or additional information is requested about the applicant or about his actual purpose of stay.
Please understand that inquiries regarding the status of your case cannot generally be answered within the first eight to twelve weeks of processing. The German foreign mission will contact you as soon as a decision on your case has been made.
For clarification: Based on data protection regulations, detailed information can only be provided to the applicant, his legal representative or an authorized person with a written power of attorney. Replies to requests from third parties, unfortunately, cannot be provided.
Visa refusal, appeal procedure
In response to the decision to refuse a visa, the applicant may file an appeal in writing, i.e. appeal against this decision.
The application for appeal must be drawn up in German, or an appropriate translation must be attached to the application in Russian.
