What number in your passport shows how many people are like you?

A civil passport, which is issued in Russia from the age of 14, is the main document confirming the identity of its owner. Additional seals and stamps are placed on its pages if the life situation changes. For example, it indicates the place of registration (registration), military registration and enlistment office marks for military service, TIN, blood type, presence of children and marital status (marriage and divorce). And, of course, each passport contains a number and series, which are unique identifiers of the document.

Passport registration

The passport is issued according to three schemes:

  1. Through the IEC. Perhaps this is the most convenient option.
  2. In the Main Department of Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Traditional way.
  3. Government services. In this case, the application is filled out there, but in the end you will receive a referral to your Police department, which is responsible for issuing and processing documents.

If all documents have been collected correctly, you will receive your ID. The passport number and series are indicated on all pages of your red document. The series is the first 4 digits, the number is the remaining 6 digits, which are located along the edge of the page.

What the series and passport number look like

When wondering what the passport number and series are, look at the outermost area of the document pages. In the upper borders of the second and third pages, the numbers are applied using high-tech printing techniques. From pages five to twenty, the numbers are located at the bottom. They are applied using laser perforation. If you don't know how to determine the passport series, take a look at the numbering. A number consisting of the first four digits is a series.

So, how many numbers are there in the passport series? There are 4 of them. At the same time, they are divided into two identical groups. The first of them is the regional code, the second is the year in which the document was received. The six digits that follow are the registration number of the form. There is one for each “little book”.

Another question that the ID holder faces concerns how to find out the department code in the passport. This refers to the unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation that issued the document. The numbers indicating this information are located on the second page of the document in the corresponding field.

Story

The first passports in Russia began to appear in 1906, and they contained all the information about the owner of the document. The original version of the document was replaced in 1932 and began to be issued at the age of 16. In 1937, a mandatory photograph was added to the simple form. By the way, the documents of rural residents and townspeople were very different from each other.

A unified form of passport appeared in the early 70s. The documents became indefinite; the corresponding photographs at 25 and 45 years old were simply added to them.

Until 1972, information about criminal records and life under occupation could be entered into the document.

How are things now?

In modern Russia, since 1997, a Presidential Decree and a Government Decree have been in force on the replacement of USSR passports. The appearance has been significantly changed, the indication of nationality and 4 pages have been removed. In addition, the words “series” and “number” disappeared. Now you need to determine them yourself, which is not at all difficult.

The meaning of the series and passport number

A unique passport number allows you to quickly identify a citizen. They are assigned in a certain way and certain information is encoded in them. The series number consists of 4 digits, the first ones indicate the region, as well as the year of issue of the identity document. For example, Moscow - 45, 65 - Sverdlovsk Region, 05 - Altai Territory, 87 - Komi Republic, 75 - Chelyabinsk Region and so on.

Series 65 07 - means the person belongs to the Sverdlovsk region, and the form itself was printed in 2007.

Series 46 14 - the passport was issued in the Moscow region, and its form was produced in 2014.

The Republic of Crimea, which joined the Russian Federation, was assigned the number - 39. There you can typically see the series:

  • 39 14,
  • 39 15,
  • 39 16.

And from the number itself, which consisted of 6 digits, it is impossible to calculate any information. They are simply issued in a strict order from 000101 to 999999. There is no need to be afraid that after 999999 documents are issued, their numbers will begin to repeat. This will not happen, because the passport series contains a variable value - the year the form was issued.

Therefore, very often, if it is necessary to identify a citizen, you may be asked for the series and number of your passport everywhere.

Machine readability

Passport data protection

Knowing your passport details, scammers can do quite a lot of things. For example, to issue microloans and other forms of loans for you. Or make you a guarantor for a loan that evil people did not even intend to repay.

In addition, companies used for cashing out – illegal financial transactions to evade taxes – can be registered on someone else’s passport.

The exceptions to whom you can give your passport include:

  • Notary,
  • Pension Fund,
  • Tax Service,
  • Human Resources Department.

By law, individuals cannot access another person's passport information without law enforcement. But, unfortunately, from time to time, information leaks occur, and the data of many people ends up on the Internet through the hands of scammers.

By the way, it is unacceptable to take your passport as collateral for some transaction, such as renting equipment.

What do the numbers in the passport series mean?

The first 2 characters correspond to the region in which the document was issued. Many people know about the codification system for motorists. It is taken from the numbering of subjects in the Constitution of the Russian Federation. However, this is not the only classification adopted at the state level.

Each region has its own number according to the OKATO system. Its first two digits are borrowed and inserted into the beginning of the passport series.

As an example, we list the codes of different cities:

  • If the passport was issued in Moscow, then the first 2 digits of the series are 45.
  • Residents of St. Petersburg will find number 40 in their document.
  • If you are from Kazan, then the numbers in your passport probably start with the number 92.
  • The first characters in the series for Volgograd residents are 18.

If a person born in a certain region moves and receives a new passport, then the first numbers will certainly change. For example, in Moscow it was 45, and in St. Petersburg it will become 40. However, if a citizen receives the next passport in the same locality, then all documents issued in his name will begin with the same numbers.

Change of passport and its details

If everything in a person’s life goes smoothly, he has to get his passport once and change it twice. In other cases, when the document is lost or severely damaged, you will also have to replace your passport. According to the schedule, this happens at 20 and 45 years. This is natural, since as a person lives, his appearance slowly and steadily changes.

In the new document you will have not only a new photograph, but also a different series and passport. You can find a note about your previous ID on page 19.

Also, the document changes upon marriage and a change of surname. Inside there is also a mark about marital status, and in the future marks about children. Depending on the reason for replacing your passport, you will have to pay a state fee from 300 to 1500 rubles.

In the event of the death of a citizen of the Russian Federation, his passport is confiscated and disposed of, and a death certificate is issued instead to the closest relative.

Do the series and numbers of passports change when they are replaced?

According to the law of the Russian Federation, every citizen must change his identity document several times throughout his life. The reason may be age, changes in surname due to marriage, loss of a document, changes in appearance beyond recognition, etc. If for some reason you received a new passport, its numerical code does not remain the same, but also changes.

In the serial code, only the first two digits can match if the document has always been issued in the same area. The next two digits can also be the same, but only in the situation if the passport was issued and then changed in the same year.

Use of passport data

For any serious transactions accompanied by the conclusion of an agreement, a passport and the inclusion of passport data of one or both parties in the agreement are usually required. The concept of “passport data” includes: last name, first name and patronymic, passport series and number, place and date of birth, date and department that issued the document.

If you want someone to use your passport data, you need to write out a power of attorney for that person.

It is practically impossible to find out by legal means what kind of person is behind a particular passport. The police and special services have access to the entirety of the data.

Meaning of series and number

The unique series and number of the Russian passport guarantee quick and inevitable identification of a Russian citizen. They are the number of the document form and are not repeated by anyone; they are assigned not arbitrarily, but according to a certain principle.

The serial number of the passport consists of the OKATO code of a certain region and the year of issue of the internal certificate form. In the all-Russian classifier, which was adopted in 1995, each territorial entity (republic, territory, region, federal city, autonomous district) is assigned its own code: 01 - Altai Territory, 45 - Moscow, 87 - Komi Republic.

The first pair of numbers in the series reflects this value. Examples:

Series 46 12 means that the passport was issued in the Moscow region, and its form was printed in 2012.

Series 76 14 - document received in the Trans-Baikal Territory, form dated 2014.

The Republic of Crimea, which became part of the Russian Federation, received code 39. This means that all Crimeans have a passport series starting with 39.

A passport number without a series, consisting of six digits, is a serial number. No additional information can be obtained from it. It starts with 000101, and as it is issued it reaches 999999. After which it returns to the starting number. This transition can occur at any time point in the year, not necessarily from the new year. Even if the numbers match, the series in which the year the form was printed will be different.

In new-style passports (since 2011), under the photograph there is a typewritten inscription containing the first three characters of the series and a number without spaces. The transliteration of the name, gender, date of birth, citizenship and other information about the owner is also printed on two lines.

It is the series and number of the fundamental Russian document that make it personal and unique. They are most often requested in online registration windows in a wide variety of cases.

Checking your passport for validity

You can check the validity of your passport on the website of the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the website of the State Services. At the same time, you will not see any personal data. The system will display one of these statuses:

ValidGenuine Passport
InvalidEither the passport has expired or it is a fake.
Invalid (replaced with a new one)The document lost its relevance and was replaced with a new one with a different series and number.
The Main Directorate for Migration of Russia does not currently appear in the electronic recordsAs a rule, this happens with newly issued passports, information about which has not yet managed to get into all the databases of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. If the passport is not new, then it is highly likely to be a fake.
