Belgium

Diplomatic relations between the USSR and the Kingdom of Belgium were established on July 12, 1935.

After the invasion of fascist German troops in Belgium and in connection with the note of the German Foreign Ministry dated June 29, 1940 on the liquidation of diplomatic missions in countries occupied by Germany by July 15, the USSR mission in Brussels was closed.

On August 7, 1941, an agreement was reached between the Soviet government and the Belgian government located in London to exchange diplomatic missions, which were converted into embassies in early 1943.

The consent of the Soviet side to the opening of a general consulate of Belgium in Leningrad, recorded in the Protocol between the Government of the USSR and the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium on the establishment of consulates (clause 2), signed in Brussels on October 4, 1976, was not implemented.

On October 28, 1994, in response to a note from the Belgian Embassy in Moscow dated September 12, 1994, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation announced the consent of the Russian side to open a branch of the Belgian Embassy in St. Petersburg, which operated for two years.

The issue of the Belgian consulate in St. Petersburg was reopened in 2007. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation sent a note to the Belgian Embassy in Moscow on January 28, 2008 regarding the consent of the Government of the Russian Federation to the establishment of a Consulate General of Belgium in St. Petersburg.

The Consulate General is located in Saperny Lane, building No. 11, lit. A.

This lane (formerly Grafsky Lane) is located in one of the oldest parts of the city - the Liteiny part, which took its name from the Liteiny Dvor that existed in this area, founded by order of Peter I in 1711.

On the site of the current Saperny Lane there used to be barracks and training grounds. The Sapper Life Guards Battalion, which was formed in 1812 from officers and lower ranks of engineering troops who distinguished themselves in the Patriotic War of 1812, was stationed here for a long time. The name of Saperny Lane comes from this military unit.

In the first half of the 19th century, there were mainly wooden buildings on this site. On the site where house No. 11 is now located, there was a one-story house with a mezzanine, which belonged to the heirs of the titular councilor Ya.Ya. Kononov. In 1859, the merchant P.S. Stepanov acquired the plot, and at his request, architects A.A. Kulakov and E.G. Yurgens designed a courtyard stone three-story residential outbuilding. Then, in 1861, according to the project of A.I. Dolotov, who had the right to erect civil buildings, the stables that existed at the house were converted into living quarters.

In 1886, the plot was acquired by merchant A.F. Lobek. According to the project submitted to the St. Petersburg City Government in the same year, prepared by the architect I.V. Wolf, the construction of a two-story stone residential building was approved. A.F. Lobek owned this house until 1917.

In 1970-1971, the house was completely renovated while maintaining its façade. The converted premises of the house once housed the consulates of Iran and then Mongolia.

In 2008, the building was provided to the Consulate General of Belgium. It underwent renovations over the course of two years, ending in February 2010. The official opening of the Consulate General, which was attended by the Secretary General of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dier Achten, took place on May 5, 2010.

From November 28, 2021, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Belgium in St. Petersburg is located at: 191186, St. Petersburg, emb. Moika River, 42, lit. A, office 38-N.
