What you need to know about a visa to the Czech Republic for study purposes

It is important to make a decision about studying in the Czech Republic in advance, since the process of obtaining a long-term student visa is lengthy.

In this material, we will talk in detail about a study visa to the Czech Republic - processing times, registration procedures, issuance statistics, required documents, risks, as well as the responsibilities of visa holders and its further extension.

The main recommendation: start registration a year before the start of training

Most foreign students begin their studies in the Czech Republic with a one-year Czech language course and preparation for admission. We have always recommended starting registration for the course as early as possible - ideally a year in advance. You will save on training (if you register early, there are discounts or other promotions), and most importantly, you will have enough time to complete the documents and confidence in obtaining a visa before the start of classes.

Now the recommendation to register for courses in advance is especially relevant. Over the past two years, interest in studying in the Czech Republic has increased significantly (almost 50%). In this regard, the situation with obtaining a long-term visa to the Czech Republic for the purpose of study has become more complicated. There are long queues at Czech consulates for appointments to apply for a long-term visa. Some consulates make appointments 4-5 months in advance. Therefore, now it is especially important to make a decision as early as possible, register for the course and begin visa processing.

Who is eligible for a student visa?

A long-term student visa to the Czech Republic allows you to legally reside in the state. Another bonus is that you can travel to other Schengen countries if necessary. After 10 years of stay in a European state, the applicant can apply for permanent residence.

Applicants aged 16-30 who have already enrolled in local secondary or higher educational institutions can count on obtaining a type D visa to the Czech Republic. These must be accredited universities.

Taking language courses also requires a student visa. Many people choose Czech language courses, since knowledge of it will be needed in the future for studying at university.

Most public universities accept applications until the end of February. This point is worth taking into account in order to be on time.

Children are also allowed to go to the Czech Republic to study. But applicants who are still 14 years old cannot be in the country alone. To receive education, they must have parents (one of them) or guardians with them. Visiting by an organized group is also allowed.

Sometimes Schengen Category C is opened for short-term courses. This permit gives foreign guests the right to stay in the country for 90 days over a six-month period from the date of entry. The maximum validity period of a Schengen visa is 5 years.

Short-term passes are divided into single and multiple passes. Single-entry visas give the right to cross the border once - during the period specified in the visa. Multiple passes allow you to enter a state more than once while they remain valid. With multiple Schengen it is very convenient to visit other European countries that are part of the Schengen area.

You need a long-term Czech visa

It is important to immediately understand: to come to study in the Czech Republic, you need a targeted long-term Czech visa. You will not be able to come to study in the Czech Republic on a long-term tourist visa to the Schengen countries or on a visa to any other European country. By law, with such visas you can stay in the Czech Republic for no more than 3 months.

You should not come to study in the Czech Republic on short-term visas while waiting for consideration of a long-term visa. This may be interpreted by migration authorities as a violation of the visa regime.

In the letter itself you need to write the following:

1. The applicant’s first and last name in Latin letters according to the foreign passport;

2. Date of birth;

3. Foreign passport number;

4. Applicant's email address;

5. Applicant's telephone number;

6. Purpose of application: Long-term visa.

A separate application, which must contain a scanned copy of the page with the data and photograph of the foreign passport, the page with the registration of the civil passport and a scanned copy of the document confirming the purpose of stay (confirmation of study). Documents in the application must be in PDF format. An application that does not contain all required data will be considered invalid and will not be processed. Within a couple of days you will receive a response email with the appointed date. And now we get to the most important thing.

Where do students live?

We offer our students to choose accommodation options from those available on the market.
Students can use our help in booking a dormitory or decide on renting a room in a dormitory or apartment on their own. The situation with hostels in Prague and Brno at the moment is such that student demand for hostels greatly exceeds supply. We make advance reservations for our students to ensure they have accommodation options. That is, we guarantee places for our students. As a rule, it is almost impossible to rent a hostel on your own, since there are simply no places.

Student visa to the Czech Republic: work and leisure

For those who, in addition to studying, also want to work and travel, there is good news! A Czech study visa allows you to do all this.

Job

A student visa to the Czech Republic allows its holder to officially work, but, of course, not full-time, because study should remain in first place, but within 150 working hours per year. This is quite a bit, but it will allow you to earn extra money during the summer holidays, for example, in cafes or hotels. The Czech Republic is a very popular tourist destination. There is always a lot of work in this sector, especially in the summer.

When applying for such a temporary job, the student will need to conclude with the employer:

  • or a work contract (for work with a total duration of no more than 100 hours)
  • or an employment contract (for work with a total duration of more than 100 hours).

In the first case, the employer does not pay taxes for the temporary worker. In the second, contributions will be 4.5-8% of the salary. We strongly recommend entering into such formal agreements. This will help avoid possible unpleasant situations and disputes with the employer.

Trips

A student visa to the Czech Republic allows you to relax in addition to work. With this type of document you can travel freely throughout all Schengen countries. The Czech Republic is located in the very center of Europe, so you can travel often and inexpensively. You will be able to travel to other 25 European countries with the right to stay for up to 90 days.

Visa documents that students obtain themselves

First of all, students should order a police clearance certificate , as this document has to wait a long time. For example, in Russia the issuance period is a month.

A certificate of good conduct must be obtained from the internal affairs authorities of your country. Students who have lived for more than 6 months in another country over the past three years must provide a police clearance certificate from that country as well.

  • Citizens of Russia must obtain a certificate of no criminal record from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. Certificates issued by the Unified Information Center are not suitable.
  • Citizens of Ukraine must provide a certificate of no criminal record in the POVNA version.
  • Citizens of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan must have an apostille on the certificate.

Next, students applying for a visa must receive a certificate from the bank confirming the availability of funds in the account and the bank card issued for the account.

If you are requesting a visa to the Czech Republic for a year, you must have at least CZK 81,400 in your account (it is advisable to show the amount higher). You must have an international bank card (VISA or MASTERCARD) for this account.

A bank account can be opened in the name of the student or in the name of one of the student’s parents (in this case, an additional international plastic card must be issued in addition to this account in the name of the student).

From the bank you need to obtain a certificate with the following content: “In the name of ... an account has been opened for which a plastic card has been issued ... (number such and such) ... of an international standard in the name of ... The balance of funds as of (date) is ... Equivalent in euros ....”

It is important that the funds remain in the account for the entire period of visa consideration, since it is likely that during the visa consideration process you will be asked to additionally provide a certificate with information about the movement of funds in the account.

At the consulate you will need not only to provide a certificate of availability of funds, but also to show your bank card and provide a copy of its front side.

  • If you are translating documents in Russia, you must first contact a translator from Russian into Czech, and then be sure to certify the correctness of the translation from a notary at the Czech Consulate.
  • Students from Ukraine must contact a court (sworn) translator into Czech - he will perform both translation and certification of documents.
  • Students from Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan must first contact a translator from Russian into Czech, and then have the translation certified by any notary.

  • Receipt of payment of the visa fee, which, depending on the urgency of the application, ranges from 35 to 70 euros;
  • Document of financial support for residence in the Republic or other Schengen countries. You must receive it no more than three months before submitting documents. Financial support for travelers ranges from 1,010 to 38,380 Czech crowns, depending on the length of stay in the country.

    • bank account statement in bank form with a balance of at least the specified amount;
    • a certificate from the place of work about wages or a certificate of form 2 personal income tax;

    It is officially possible to present one of the required documents, however, the more evidence of your solvency you attach to your application, the higher your chance of visa approval. If your trip is paid for by someone else, then you need to provide, along with the above documents, a sponsorship letter and a copy of the passport of the person paying the expenses.

    This package is basic and is suitable for obtaining a single-entry Schengen visa to the Czech Republic.

    Additional requirements for documents for double and multiple entry (multiple) visas:

    • To obtain a double-entry visa, the amount of the medical policy must cover both entries;
    • for a multiple visa, you need to put one more signature - on the fourth page of the application form, in the section on health insurance.

    Visa application for children

    When applying for a visa to the Czech Republic for children , you will need a number of additional papers:

    • a copy of the birth certificate;
    • a copy of the Schengen visa of the accompanying parent, if he already has one;
    • notarized consent of parents or legal guardians if the minor is traveling to the Czech Republic with one of the parents or accompanied by a third party.

    Also, from February 2021, children are required to submit a foreign passport, no more than five years have passed from the date of issue. If the photo in the passport does not match the appearance of the child, a visa may not be issued.

    Since children are not allowed to travel alone, you can arrange to be accompanied by an airline employee during the flight - in this case, parental consent will also be required. In addition, you need to provide a letter of guarantee, which confirms that they will bear all costs.

    Deadlines for obtaining a visa

    Registration of a visa to the Czech Republic takes from 5 working days. In some cases, the Consulate may extend the period to a month. There is an “express” regime for issuing a visa within three days, but the official authorities do not provide guarantees that the visa will be met within the specified period.

    With the help of intermediary companies, you can receive documents much faster. If there is a need for an emergency visa, then contacting an intermediary is a good option if you choose the right company.

    How much does a visa cost for Russians?

    The cost depends on which organization will issue the visa. Consulate

    - the most budget option, in which you pay 35 euros for regular processing times and 70 euros for express.

    Visa Center

    - an intermediate option, in addition to consular and service fees, money is charged for additional services - making photos, photocopying papers, filling out a form, delivery. The final amount with a full package of services can be comparable to the cost of contacting a professional company that will arrange everything at once, without waiting or running around.

    Travel agencies

    provide document processing services with a higher level of service - the bulk of the paperwork is filled out by specialists; obtaining a visa to the Czech Republic also occurs without the participation of applicants. Of the minuses: the cost will be significantly higher than at the Consulate, some companies work only with groups or only with those who have purchased a tour.

    Specialized companies

    usually offer a full range of services - filling out and submitting all documents without the presence of the client, delivery of a completed passport with a visa. Among the significant advantages - it is possible to obtain a visa even in a day, the probability of refusal is minimal, reliable companies provide guarantees. The cost can vary from 3 to 70 thousand rubles, depending on the urgency and duration of the visa, but the level of service here is the highest.

    Where to submit documents?

    Documents for a long-term visa to the Czech Republic for the purpose of study can only be submitted to consulates (long-term visas are not issued by visa centers). You can only submit your application in person, and admission is by appointment only. At the interview, you may be asked where you will study, what the exact name of the educational institution is and where it is located, where you will live, what the conditions are in the place of your future residence in the Czech Republic, whether you have seen it. If you have not been to the Czech Republic and have not seen either the university or the dormitory, it is advisable to say that you have seen the photographs and describe what you saw in them. You may also be asked why you actually need a student visa to the Czech Republic, why you need to study in the Czech Republic and what you are going to do after completing your studies. It is advisable to answer such questions that the Czech Republic has excellent education, so you want to study in this country, and after completing your studies you are going to return and work in your homeland.

    Remember that obtaining a visa, both student and any other, to the Czech Republic and beyond, is not your right. The embassy considers issuing you a visa as a “service” that their government provides to you. Refusals sometimes do not have objective reasons; they may depend on the mood of the interviewer at the consulate or the official responsible for receiving documents, on filling out the protocol based on your answers to the questions asked, and on the subjective impression you make during the interview at the embassy. Therefore, before applying for a long-term student visa to the Czech Republic, we recommend that you prepare well for the interview at the embassy and think about how you will answer possible questions. During the interview, be polite and have a positive attitude.

    We wish you success in submitting your documents and speedy receipt of your long-awaited student visa to the Czech Republic and keep your fingers crossed!
