List of countries by the number of international migrants (immigrants) according to UN published in the collection “Trends in International Migrant Stock The 2017 Revision” and the International Migration Report 2021 (International migration report 2021: Highlights). Additionally, data from the World Bank .

An international migrant is considered a citizen who has arrived for permanent residence from abroad, as well as a citizen who does not live in the country where he was born. At the same time, migrants are not considered people who move within the territory of one country, as well as people who became citizens of another country as a result of the unification/disunion of countries. As can be seen from the statistics, the absolute number of migrant citizens lives most in the United States. At the same time, there are not as many of them in the total population as it seems. In terms of the share of migrants in the total share of the population, the UAE (United Arab Emirates) is ahead of the planet. Thus, a simple logic can be followed: most migrants (quantitatively) live in large and economically developed countries. It is also known that India and Mexico are the countries that have the largest number of their citizens living abroad. At the same time, San Marino is the country whose citizens are least willing to leave their homeland. Due to the complexity and duration of counting migrating citizens, the ranking of countries in the world by the number of migrants is updated with a delay of several years. The latest report reflects the situation in the world at the end 2017 .

How many migrants are there in the world?

According to the International Organization for Migration, a migrant is a person who is moving or has already moved across an international border or within a State and has left his place of usual residence, regardless of the legal status of the person, the voluntary or involuntary nature of the movement, the reasons for the movement or the duration of stay.

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs conducts research on the number and structure of international migrants at regular intervals. According to UN methodology, census data and national representative studies are used to determine the number of such migrants.

The UN noted that international migrants in some countries include those citizens who have never lived abroad, but received foreign citizenship due to the citizenship of their parents. In other countries, on the contrary, having been born abroad, returning and acquiring citizenship in their homeland, a person is not included in the list of international migrants. Despite all these differences in different countries, the UN takes the country of citizenship as the basis for determining migrant status in its studies. In the absence of information about the country of birth, a citizenship different from the country of permanent residence is used to identify migrants. The number of migrants in the world in mid-2021, according to the UN, has increased significantly - to 272 million from 153 million people in 1990. The share of international migrants this year was 3.5% of the world's total population.

There are slightly fewer women than men in the total number of migrants around the world. This year the “female” share was 47.9%.

International migrants are mostly quite young people. According to the UN, almost 75% of all migrants in the world, which is 202 million people, were of working age in mid-2021 - from 20 to 64 years. Under 20 years of age – 38 million people, or 14% of the total number of migrants.
