5 best and 5 worst cities for raising children in Russia

Novorossiysk

It would seem that the sea and mountains are within walking distance.
But no, we'll tell you. The city looks as uncomfortable as possible: shabby buildings, port cranes, cargo boxes with all sorts of rubbish from Turkey and an unbearably dirty bay, where only seagulls will dare to swim, littering the rocky shore. It's not so bad. Firstly, there are regular interruptions in water supply and electricity - dozens of complaints from embittered residents who are tired of sitting in the dark and without water, like in wartime, appear daily on the city’s social networks and on the chapter’s page. Secondly, in winter the town is turned upside down by the nor'easters, icy sea winds of incredible strength that overturn trucks. In February it is better to barricade yourself at home. Thirdly, there is not enough entertainment here: the city has one shopping center, a planetarium and a bunch of museums and monuments to the military glory of Novorossiysk, which was liberated from the Nazis in 1943. The entire school curriculum and children's entertainment will be built around this.

If you want to turn a child into a military man, this is an excellent plan, especially since the living conditions here are Spartan. If not, then it’s better to move 40 km east, to Kabardinka or Gelendzhik - at least your children will grow up in an atmosphere of calm.

What was my move to Sochi like?

The house where I live now / photo by the author
I did not transport all my things, since there was still housing in Novokuznetsk. I decided not to sell it so that I would have somewhere to return in case of emergency. But I still had to take a lot with me.

Since I was traveling by train, I managed to take 5 huge bags with children's things with me. I wanted to send the rest of my things by freight. I found out their prices and suddenly changed my mind.

Delivery of things from Novokuznetsk to Sochi by gazelle in 2021 cost 45,000 rubles, and shipping over 10 tons by car cost 90,000 rubles.

Having selected what I needed for the first time, I decided to contact the PEC transport company. When I ran my business, I often had to work with her. The cargo was picked up, packed and sent to Sochi. In total, I got 350 kg of things.

I’ll say that I took: a slow cooker, a TV, a hairdryer, an iron, a synthesizer (the child plays music), a laptop, 2 bicycles, 2 scooters, 5 boxes of clothes, 2 boxes of bed linen and towels, 3 boxes of toys, a bag of shoes, 2 boxes with dishes (pots, frying pans, kettles).

I paid 15,000 rubles for delivery. I paid for everything upon arrival in Sochi. It took about 10 days for my things to be transported.

Having sent my things, the next day I boarded the train with the children and went to Sochi. Tickets from Novokuznetsk cost 12,000 rubles (compartment), the oldest child received a 50% discount, the youngest traveled for free without a seat.

This was my move to Sochi.

Volgograd

Another city that has been uninhabitable since 1943, it seems. Outwardly, it looks like Novorossiysk: shabby, dirty, with poor infrastructure, but filled to the brim with patriotic pathos. Among cities with a population of over a million, Volgograd has been confidently among the worst cities in Russia for many years: there is a high level of unemployment, corruption and crime, poor quality of roads, an oppressive atmosphere and eternal problems with infrastructure. Letting children go for walks in some areas is downright dangerous. Visiting Mamayev Kurgan with your family is a good idea. Living near him is obviously bad.

High salaries

The photo shows the city of Novosibirsk.

In pursuit of financial happiness, it is still worth going to Moscow. Here the highest level of earnings in the country, as before. But the work is not limited to Moscow. Moreover, Krasnodar is now considered one of the most promising cities in Russia - it is favorable for organizing your own business. The capital of the Urals ranks 3rd among cities with the highest income. Next are Krasnodar and Novosibirsk. Experts from the Avito-work website compiled their own top cities and found out the average income of the highest paid people in the country in 2021.

  • Moscow - 50.9 thousand rubles.
  • St. Petersburg - 43.5 thousand rubles.
  • Ekaterinburg - 35.4 thousand rubles
  • Krasnodar - 34.3 thousand rubles.
  • Novosibirsk - 33.6 thousand rubles.

Chelyabinsk

The city of metallurgists and asthmatics. The place is on the verge of an environmental disaster: in winter, the children's hospital in the AMZ area is covered with black snow from factory emissions. The city is extremely dirty - and not only because of industries: local residents often complain about public services. There is a developed infrastructure, reputable universities and, in principle, a decent standard of living - but there is absolutely nothing to breathe. Children born in Chelyabinsk suffer from chronic diseases of the respiratory tract, skin, vision and mucous membranes. It’s better to get out of here and somewhere far away.

The best cities for permanent residence (5-15 km from the Moscow Ring Road)

At a distance of about 10 km from Moscow, real estate prices are more attractive, it is quieter, and the journey to the metropolis does not take much time.

Odintsovo

This city is not inferior to the capital in terms of the quality of amenities and is considered one of the cleanest and most comfortable to live in the Moscow region. It has everything a modern person needs: schools and gardens, many shops, restaurants, fitness clubs, a developed beauty industry. In addition, the ecology is excellent - the town is literally surrounded by green spaces, and there are many sanatoriums nearby. The situation with transport is also good here - the settlement is crossed by the Mozhaiskoye Highway, and in the south there is the M-1 highway. The houses here are dominated by comfort-class high-rises, which are attractive despite their considerable cost. Jobs can be found quickly, and the monthly salary is generally 45-48 thousand rubles, which is slightly higher than in other cities in the region.

A one-room apartment in Odintsovo can be bought for an average of 4-6 million. rubles

Shcherbinka

Shcherbinka is located in the south of the Moscow region, 6 km from the Moscow Ring Road. In ancient times, it was a small village, named after its owner, the boyar Shcherba. Since 1975, the village was awarded the title of city. Today Shcherbinka is known for its developed infrastructure, comfortable living and environmental cleanliness. You can get to the capital from here by bus, train or car in just 10-15 minutes. There are a large number of enterprises in the textile, fireproofing, metalworking and construction industries operating in the city. In Shcherbinka there are several schools, kindergartens, a theater college and a music school, a branch of VEGU, and a children's and youth sports school. Like other communities in the Moscow region, infrastructure is developed here. There are shops, beauty salons, pharmacies, restaurants and cafes, and a huge number of entertainment venues. Thanks to a well-developed infrastructure, there are jobs in the city, and the average salary is 44-48 thousand rubles.

Property prices here are also not too high. The average cost per square meter is 110-130 thousand rubles.

Balashikha

Balashikha is one of the largest cities in terms of population in the Moscow region. Someone might say that this is the best settlement in the Moscow region. Because of this, residents often face traffic jams and a large flow of people on public transport. The city has many green spaces, walking areas and attractions. The attractiveness of Balashikha is not only its proximity to Moscow, but also its inexpensive real estate. At the same time, the city has a huge number of industrial enterprises that provide citizens with work. The average salary in Balashikha is 38-46 thousand rubles.

The average price per square meter starts from 95 thousand rubles.

Vorkuta

If you want to turn your family's life into an icy horror, then this is the place for you. By the 15th year of being in maximum security Vorkuta, your children will most likely have learned to drink chifir, build mines using a school ruler, fight deer to the death, and survive in a snowdrift the height of a three-story building for a week.

But seriously, there is literally no place for children here - even adults have a hard time surviving in Vorkuta. All the products necessary for a healthy diet - vegetables, fruits and herbs - cost a fortune, the polar night lasts endlessly, and the short northern summer does not allow you to enjoy warm days, because in 10 seconds of being outdoors your body turns into a pincushion, but instead of needles there are mosquitoes and midges. The level of melancholy and depression per square meter in Vorkuta is off the charts.

Kazan

If you like to eat delicious food, drive on well-maintained roads and walk along cozy streets on weekends, then Kazan is an ideal place to live.
There are quite high salaries, good infrastructure, all the opportunities for getting a quality education and active self-development (which is important for both children and adults). The Tatars are a people who have inhabited Russia for a very long time, and they, in fact, have little in common with the Chechens, Uzbeks and other outwardly similar ethnic groups. Except that the love for meat and tea cannot be taken away. Be prepared for the fact that the residents of Kazan are a little arrogant and look at visitors with the same skepticism as Muscovites and St. Petersburg residents. But in any case, Kazan and the entire Republic of Tatarstan as a whole is an excellent place to start a family and raise children.

Austria

This country automatically counts the registration of children into the total cost of all investments. But to obtain citizenship in this country, you must have a large deposit amount - from 6 million euros. The passport will be ready after a year of residence. Despite the huge sums, parents and children will receive a high standard of living, excellent education and the best medical services. There are many more positive aspects. After all the formalities, the acquired business can be transferred to children who will already be residents of Austria.

There is no need to worry about moving to another country with your children. The positive aspects of changing your place of residence will be much greater than the negative ones. The positive outcome of the move will depend only on the wishes of the parents and their actions. To do this, choose the most suitable option, and also ask for help from specialists. If you invest correctly in temporary residence status, you can provide your children with a prestigious future.

Krasnodar

The city where Muscovites who are tired of Moscow go. There is NO sea here, it’s time to remember this - it is 170 kilometers to the south. However, this does not spoil Krasnodar at all: according to statistics, people here are happier than in other regions of Russia (especially when compared with Vorkuta, yes).

Krasnodar is sunny, cheap vegetables and fruits are available, the whole family has the opportunity to eat healthy and play sports - all conditions have been created for this, including workout areas on the streets. The city is very green, the central streets are washed daily by special machines. A huge drawback is traffic jams, but recently many residents have switched to electric scooters - it’s more environmentally friendly and faster. So if you are not bothered by the nightly 9 points in Yandex.Navigator and the abundance of Cossack patrols on the streets, then feel free to get across - before the city bursts with visitors.

Tyumen

For those who cannot stand the southern sun, the Siberian hospitality of Tyumen awaits. Oddly enough, residents are comfortable in this cold city: there is high-quality medicine, there are no problems with work, and a dynamically developing infrastructure. What is the secret of Tyumen's success? Hint: it is called the oil and gas capital. Now it is clear? Big money is concentrated here, and you have every chance to make a brilliant career and provide your family with a decent life. In addition, in the Tyumen region you can get a good education.

Copenhagen

The fifth place in the ranking of the best city to move to is Copenhagen in Denmark. The city is great for developing a business, raising children and receiving additional education.

Novosibirsk

A very unexpected option for moving, but there are compelling arguments for this. Firstly, the scale of the metropolis. There really is everything here: for work, for leisure, for education and treatment. Secondly, this is an ideal place to make your child a world-famous scientist: you can get a more than decent education in Novosibirsk. And thirdly, the average salary is from 30,000 rubles, which is, in general, a good indicator for Russia. Cons: climate, and this is obvious. But again: like in Vorkuta, it won’t be noticeable for sure.

Hungary

In the modern world, this is one of the most accessible countries in Europe, which allows you to obtain temporary residence under a simplified program for the whole family. In order to move by immigration or if you choose where to emigrate from Russia with a child within 3 weeks, you will need to have an investment deposit in the amount of 300,000 euros, but also plus 60,000 euros for processing all documents.

The quality of education in this country is at a high level, which is not inferior to the average European level. Diplomas help you get a job in prestigious companies in Europe. After six months, the family will be able to obtain permanent residence status.

Kaliningrad

If your soul is drawn to Europe, but you still don’t have enough money, then it’s better to move to Kaliningrad with your family. Firstly, there will be time to get used to the geographical distance from your native expanses and your beloved grandmother, and secondly, proximity to European culture will leave an imprint on the mentality and upbringing of children, there will be an incentive to learn languages, get acquainted with the culture and art of the Old World. The city provides opportunities for doing business and getting a good education. An important aspect: quality medicine. Kaliningrad is definitely worth considering as an option for permanent residence.

Emigrate from Russia with children

It may be interesting: We apply for Schengen on our own - how can everyone get a Schengen visa?

Immigration is the process by which people enter a country to live there permanently. That is, this term always has the preposition “in”. For example, immigration to Europe. Emigration is the act of leaving one's country of residence with the intention of settling elsewhere. That is why emigration is always “out”. For example, emigration from Russia.

What EU countries offer:

  • Stability
  • High salary level
  • Employment Opportunities

This is why people decide to move to these countries in order to guarantee their children a bright future with the best quality of medical care and education, as well as excellent treatment for emigrants from Russia and the CIS countries.

Primary considerations should include quality medical care, social guarantees, and the level of science and education. In fact, European education has been recognized as one of the best in the world! EU countries also offer well-developed infrastructure, political stability, high salaries and the opportunity to start a business.

Important! All these benefits are factors that provide the necessary support to residents. Europe is known for its high unemployment benefits, but it should be noted that not everyone receives them.

Europe is also famous for its low housing prices and programs to support young families. It is also important to note the high level of safety standards in EU countries, including not only crime rate statistics, but also the feeling of safety among all residents. Emigrating from Russia with children is much better than emigrating to America because there are more opportunities to visit family and friends in Russia. In addition, the climate in Europe is similar to Russia, and no problems with acclimatization should arise.
