Visa to Lithuania: registration, documents, deadlines and reasons for refusals

Lithuania joins Schengen

  • Last minute tours
    around the world

Lithuania, as well as the other Baltic countries, is not as convenient for visits by Russian tourists as it could be - Russian citizens need a visa to enter. You can submit documents for its registration at the consular department of the Lithuanian Embassy in Moscow, visa centers in the capital and 13 cities of Russia and the Consulates General of Lithuania in cities of the Russian Federation. The requirements for the package of documents are the usual “general Schengen” ones; the visa application form must be filled out online. A pleasant moment is the opportunity to visit other Schengen countries with a single visa.

Types of visas

  • A Schengen visa is received by all citizens of the Russian Federation who are going to Lithuania for a short period of time: on a tourist trip, for work, for an internship, to visit friends, at the invitation of relatives. And also when transiting through the territory of Lithuania.
  • National visa “D” - for long-term stay in Lithuania (up to 1 year). Only official representative offices - embassies and consulates - are authorized to issue it. Students and specialists working under a contract are usually issued a multiple-entry visa, but there are also single-entry visas for Russians temporarily or permanently residing in Lithuania.
  • Simplified transit document (STD) - issued to citizens of the Russian Federation who need to get to the Kaliningrad region and back to Russia through the territory of Lithuania. The document can only be issued at the embassy, its validity period does not exceed 24 hours, and the number of border crossings is unlimited. To obtain it, you need to provide justification for regular trips: papers confirming the presence of relatives or property in the Kaliningrad region, as well as economic or social ties with the region.

UPTD-Railway is a permit that allows you to travel through Lithuania on a transit train connecting the Russian Federation and Kaliningrad.

Decide on the type of visa to Lithuania

Before collecting documentation and contacting the authorized body, decide on the purpose of the trip and, accordingly, the type of permit. Tourists have a number of options at their disposal:

  • Schengen visa to Lithuania . A common type intended for Russians planning a trip to the country for a short period of time. The purpose of a short-term trip can be anything - work, internship, tourism, guests, inviting relatives, etc. Also, a type C permit plays the role of a transit visa through Lithuania when the final destination is another state.
  • National visa (D) . A long-term permit is issued when visiting the country for longer periods (up to a year). Only Embassies and Consulates handle issuance. Depending on the number of border crossings, single and multiple entry visas are issued. Russians who live or study in the country often apply for the document.
  • Simplified transit visa to Lithuania (STV) . Provided to Russian citizens who wish to visit the Kaliningrad region and return home through Lithuanian territory. The permit is issued exclusively at the Embassy, and its validity period is limited to 24 hours. The number of border crossings is not limited. Obtaining such a visa for travel through Lithuania is possible upon justification of the trip. Papers indicating the presence of relatives in the Kaliningrad region or other areas close to it can be used as supporting documentation.
  • UPTD-ZhD . Many people ask whether a visa to Lithuania is needed when traveling through the country by train. The answer is Yes. In this case, a special document is issued that allows you to cross the border in this way. At the same time, the train should connect the Russian Federation and Kaliningrad.

With this in mind, it is clear that Russians have a large selection of permits for traveling to Lithuanian territory or passing through the state. It remains to decide on the appropriate option.

Applying for a visa yourself

Most Lithuanian Schengen applicants come to the visa center - it’s more convenient, faster, and the service fee is small. But no one canceled the opportunity to contact the embassy or consulate directly, especially if the attempt to obtain the coveted stamp through an intermediary failed.

Whatever method the applicant for Lithuanian Schengen chooses, he needs to collect the necessary documents in advance. At the visa center they can make copies of passports, photographs, and issue a policy (representatives of several insurance companies are always present in the hall). The embassy and consulates do not provide these services.

Pre-registration is required at the official representative offices of Lithuania and the Moscow visa center. In regional offices located in Irkutsk, Ufa, Omsk, Saratov, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Krasnodar, Saratov, Yekaterinburg, Perm, Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Vladivostok, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Nizhny Novgorod, applications are submitted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The official time frame for obtaining a Lithuanian Schengen visa is about two weeks, but in reality it takes 5-9 days.

Applying for a visa to Lithuania yourself

It is worth taking care of obtaining a visa in advance. You can independently obtain a visa to Lithuania using two methods. The first is to submit documents to the Consulate at the Embassy, the second is to contact the regional Visa Center. CCs are located not only in Moscow, but also in several more remote regions of the country, for example, in Khabarovsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Vladivostok, St. Petersburg and other large cities.

Before visiting the CC or the Embassy, it is recommended to check the working hours and hours when documents are accepted.

Through the Embassy

A visa to Lithuania through the Embassy is required if the applicant requests a national permit. For a short-term Schengen visa, submitting documents directly, bypassing the VC, speeds up the process and reduces costs, since there is no need to pay a service fee. To get Lithuanian Schengen, you need to follow this algorithm:

  1. Make a pre-registration through the website via the Internet or by telephone;
  2. Fill out the electronic version of the form, which must subsequently be printed and certified with a personal signature;
  3. Attach a photograph to the electronic application prepared in advance;
  4. Appear at the Embassy at the specified time and date;
  5. Submit the necessary documents, pay for the visa service, and if you need to answer questions;
  6. Wait for the request to be considered. You can control the process on the website;
  7. Come and get a passport with a visa.

All required documents must be submitted in original or certified copy. Papers other than international passports cannot be returned.

Contacting the Lithuania Visa Application Center

A visa to Lithuania can also be ordered through the Visa Application Center. The only type of permits not issued through the CC is category D. A short-term Schengen visa to Lithuania is issued through the center at the request of a person planning a trip to this Baltic country. An applicant applying to the Visa Center must act in the following order:

  1. Pre-entry;
  2. Preparation of a package of documents, filling out an application;
  3. Submitting the application form and its attachments personally or through a representative;
  4. Waiting for the request to be processed;
  5. Receiving ready documents.

Documents for a visa to Lithuania can be submitted by:

  • The applicant personally;
  • Parents for minor children;
  • A close relative who needs to confirm the relationship;
  • Attorney-in-fact.

Based on the introduction of a new procedure for submitting fingerprints, it is necessary to personally visit the Visa Application Center or Embassy to obtain data. This is not necessary if a similar procedure has already been carried out within the last five years . The data is stored in a single Schengen database for five years.

To submit documents to the embassy, a travel company needs a power of attorney from the tourist.

How to apply for a visa to Lithuania: instructions

Many travelers decide to independently obtain a visa to Lithuania in Moscow or another city. In this case, it is important to adhere to the following algorithm:

  • Select the appropriate type of permit to travel to the country.
  • Download and enter the data in the fields of the application form. This work can be done on paper or online. When contacting the Consulate/Embassy, only electronic versions are accepted.
  • Make an appointment at the CC or the Embassy. This condition is mandatory.
  • Pay the fees (service, visa). The price of a visa to Lithuania was announced above. Payment is made in a convenient way - by bank card or cash. When contacting the Consulate/Embassy, money is issued only in EU currency (Euro).
  • Submit a package of documents for consideration. If fingerprinting is required, have it done in person.
  • Monitor the readiness status of the permit through the website (online). As soon as the documents are ready, an SMS is sent to your phone.
  • Take your stamped passport. To do this, you can come yourself or send a third party (if you have a power of attorney). If the document was issued at the Consulate/Embassy, you need to come in person. In the case of the CC, there is an option for delivery to the apartment at a price of 1000 rubles (the tariff depends on the locality).

As you can see, it is possible to apply for a visa to Lithuania on your own, but it involves a lot of hassle and requires attention from the traveler. Small errors in documents, false information or other shortcomings may lead to a negative answer. But more on that below.

Entry by car

For Russian road travelers, the road to Lithuania runs through Belarus, where there are international checkpoints: Benyakoni - Shalchininkai, Kamenny Log - Medininkai, Kotlovka - Lavorishkes, Privalka - Raigardas. The exception is residents of the Kaliningrad region, who through the border crossings Morskoye - Nida, Sovetsk - Panemune, Chernyshevskoye - Kybartai, Pogranichny - Ramonishkiai immediately enter the Republic of Lithuania.

In addition to a valid Schengen visa, the driver must have:

  • car insurance “Green Card” (it is also needed to travel through the territory of Belarus);
  • international law;
  • medical insurance;
  • if necessary, a power of attorney to drive the car.

Lithuanian border guards often additionally ask for a vehicle diagnostic card. Hotel reservations, a description of the travel route, certificates of financial solvency and other “visa” documents usually do not need to be shown, but it is better to have them with you.

Documentation

The next thing you need to do is prepare the necessary documents. Please read the list provided by the Consulate carefully:

  1. A foreign passport, which must be valid for another 90 days after your return.
  2. Internal passport and copies of all its pages.
  3. 2 photos.
  4. A certificate issued by the company where you work, indicating your position and salary. If you are a private entrepreneur, then you will need documents to register your business.
  5. Certificate of health insurance with coverage of at least 30 thousand euros.
  6. Financial documents confirming that you have the means to travel. If there are none, then you need to provide a sponsorship letter from the person who is paying for your trip. The amount in your account or your sponsor's account must correspond to the calculation of 60 euros for each day of travel.
  7. Questionnaire.
  8. Hotel reservation.
  9. Flights.

Do not forget that for pensioners an appropriate certificate is required, and for students and schoolchildren - a student or student card and a certificate from the educational institution confirming the fact of study.

Visa for children

A citizen under 18 years of age traveling separately from parents/guardians or with one of the parents/guardians must have the appropriate permission obtained from the child’s legal representatives and issued in the name of the accompanying person (the trip is not possible without an escort).

To obtain Schengen to Lithuania, a minor must provide a general package of documents and additionally a birth certificate with a copy. The form is signed by parents/guardians. If the child's visa application is processed separately, a copy of the accompanying person's visa is required.

Unofficially, it is believed that it is more difficult to obtain a visa to Lithuania than, for example, to Spain or France. Indeed, Lithuanian visa officers are sometimes overzealous when checking documents. Also at the border they often require you to present copies of your hotel reservation, return ticket and explain in detail the purpose of the trip.

Visas to Lithuania

Only an electronically completed application form, printed on paper with a photograph attached and a signature, will be accepted

check the readiness of the visa after personally submitting a set of collected papers using the VC website.

A visa to Lithuania can be of several categories, having the following letter designation:

  • A, B - intended for transit trips, but they are now being replaced by the next category with the appropriate mark.
  • C – allows you to stay in the country for up to 90 days every six months, suitable for tourism, business, educational and other trips. It differs in the number of entry permits.
  • D – when receiving a visa of this category, you can stay in Lithuania for more than 90 days, but not more than one year. You can stay in other member states of the Schengen agreement for up to 90 days, it is divided into a single entry visa, which allows citizens of other countries to be in Lithuania for permanent and temporary residence, and a multiple visa, which can be obtained by subjects crossing the Lithuanian border for the purpose of work, study, professional trips or for a long stay.

Transit with a simplified procedure:

For citizens of the Russian Federation, the specified procedure is provided for staying on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania within one day when traveling to or from Kaliningrad, but visiting other Schengen countries with a simplified transit document (hereinafter referred to as FTD) is not possible.

UTD is intended for travel by car; for such travel by train, UTD-ZhD is provided.

Once you have received the UPTD-Railway, you can be in Lithuania within 6 hours; such a document remains valid for up to 90 days; in order to purchase it, you need to pay for the travel document at the ticket office of the railway station 28 or more hours before departure. When you receive your ticket, you should tell the cashier about permission to move the border, because such official paper must be in hand at the time of boarding the train.

A set of required documents to obtain a FTD:

  • international passport;
  • civil passport and its photocopy;
  • a form filled out for a transit trip by land vehicle;
  • photo in color 3.5 x 4.5 centimeters;
  • receipt of payment for the consular fee;
  • documentary justification for the purpose of the visit (original and photocopy). Such a document can serve as evidence of residence in Kaliningrad and the region of persons with whom there are family ties, official papers confirming ownership of real estate objects issued no earlier than 1 year, and extracts from the register attached to them, as well as certificates of cooperation with some or legal entities in Kaliningrad.

    • Financial justification for travel expenses.
    • If the inviter has citizenship of any EU country, the tourist only needs proof of kinship.

    A visit to Lithuania is educational. Cultural or sporting event:

    • An application from the receiving institution or an order for inclusion in the number of students.
    • Document describing sources of sponsorship.

    Traveling to Lithuania with children:

    A separate visa is issued for each child, regardless of who he or she is traveling with. The set of documents provided is standard; the following official papers must also be attached:

    • Photocopy of birth certificate;
    • Consent of a parent or guardian (not leaving the country with the children) for the child to travel abroad, certified by a notary office;
    • A photocopy of the parents' Schengen visas;
    • A form that the parent must fill out.

    Time during which documents are reviewed:

    Processing of documents by the embassy takes no more than 5 working days.

    If the embassy makes a demand for additional information or you are called for a conversation, the period may increase to a month.

    In the regional VCs, the period for studying your certificates is 2-4 days longer, since the documentation package is sent to Moscow, and the answer will also come from there.

    The urgent regime reduces this period to 3 or less days, but the issuance of an urgent visa takes place exclusively in Moscow, but it will be necessary to justify the urgency or write a petition to the Embassy, attaching travel documents with the date set on them.

    Photo requirements

    The photo must be taken no earlier than six months ago. The face is located frontally, the height from the crown to the chin is 32-36 mm. The expression is neutral, without a smile. Apart from the face, neck and upper shoulders, there should be nothing else in the photo. Darkening of the image, red-eye effect, foreign objects in the frame, glasses with opaque lenses and massive frames are also not allowed.

    The length of the head from the chin to the crown is approximately 30 mm (70-80% of the area). The photo is taken from the front, the gaze is directed at the camera, there is no smile.

    Fingerprinting

    Every Schengen applicant must be fingerprinted and take a digital photo once every 5 years when receiving their next visa. Based on this data, identification is carried out at the border: the customs officer asks to put his hand on a special device, after which a comparison is made with the information in the system. Minors under 12 years of age and persons with finger injuries due to which the individual line pattern is damaged do not undergo fingerprinting. The procedure is carried out at visa centers and consulates equipped with special equipment.

    Consular fee – 35 €

    Tariffs for visas to Lithuania for Russians do not differ from prices in other member states of the Schengen area: 35 EUR for a regular procedure, 70 EUR for an urgent one. Only children under 6 years of age and citizens of the Russian Federation with disabilities and accompanying persons do not pay the consular fee. The visa center additionally charges a service fee of 20 EUR for each applicant for its services. Prices on the page are for September 2021.

    The visa center offers the following options: “Mobile biometrics” - accepting an application with documents, taking fingerprints and taking a photo with a digital camera at home (150 EUR for one application), “Home visa” - the same, but without without biometrics (100 EUR ), delivery of the finished passport to the address (from 1000 RUB depending on the city).

    Valid term of a visa

    There is a widespread belief among tourists that the Baltic countries often issue visas strictly based on travel dates. This unspoken rule applies primarily to citizens of the Russian Federation applying for Schengen for the first time. On the contrary, if your passport already has an entry stamp from one of the EU states, then the chance of getting a multiple visa for six months or a year increases. Holders of a Lithuanian Schengen visa issued earlier are sometimes lucky - the next one may be approved for 1-2 years. But it’s still worth getting ready for a one-time Schengen with a limited period of stay.

    Visa officers are most loyal to those who frequently visit Lithuania and have an impeccable visa history without violating the rules. Such applicants can quite easily obtain a long-term multiple visa.
