Obtaining a visa to the Czech Republic may become almost impossible for Russians

Moscow expelled 20 Czech diplomats, leaving only five employees at the diplomatic mission. They will not physically be able to issue tourist visas to the same extent as before.

Russians will likely have difficulty obtaining a visa to the Czech Republic. The scandal surrounding the explosions at an ammunition depot in Vrbetice, Czech Republic, in 2014 could lead to such consequences.

In response to accusations of involvement in the incident and the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Prague, Russian authorities sharply reduced the number of the Czech diplomatic mission in Moscow. As reported in Prague, after the expulsion of 20 Czech diplomats from Russia, only five employees remained at the embassy.

Moreover, Moscow gave Czech diplomats only a day to leave the country and prohibited the embassy from hiring Russian citizens.

As a result, Russians may practically lose the opportunity to obtain a visa to the Czech Republic, notes Aleksan Mkrtchyan, member of the presidium of the Alliance of Travel Agencies and general director of the Pink Elephant travel network :

— The activities of the embassy will be paralyzed, because these five people who remained in the Czech embassy will perform purely technical functions. There is no longer any need to talk about any mass issuance of visas. Only those who urgently need to [leave] - for a funeral or to study - will receive visas. With the number of diplomatic workers being five people, you will have to forget about tourism to the Czech Republic for a long time.

— Will Russians be able to travel to the Czech Republic by applying for a visa to another state from the Schengen countries?

- This is always undesirable. Some countries turn a blind eye to this. We know of a case where people with a Portuguese visa entered Greece. And some countries, for example Germany, look extremely negatively when people with a Greek visa enter Germany - Greece is very far from Germany. Therefore, naturally, this is undesirable. It is clear that there are no borders and people will come to Austria, Germany or Poland - those countries that border the Czech Republic, and then come to the Czech Republic. But in any case, unfortunately, I don’t see anything good for the development of the exchange of tourists between us and the Czech Republic in the near future.

Other consequences of the scandal include the exclusion of Russia from the tender for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic. As stated in the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade, Rosatom will leave the list of participants in the competition in the coming days and will not be able to participate in the project as a subcontractor. The size of the tender for the construction of a new power unit at the Dukovany NPP is at least 6 billion euros. Initially, the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade itself advocated for a wide list of applicants in order to increase competition.

Does Rosatom have the opportunity to challenge the decision? Leading analyst of the National Energy Security Fund Igor Yushkov comments:

Igor Yushkov, a leading analyst at the Rosatom National Energy Security Foundation, of course, can still fight, file a lawsuit in the European courts, because de facto what the Czechs are doing is sanctions against both China and Russia. But formally, in general, Rosatom can fight through the antimonopoly legislation of the European Union: it guarantees access of any companies to the market, any companies to conduct such tenders. And you can take advantage of this and fight. Of course, there are not very many chances. Among the companies that remain: the American-Canadian Westinghouse, the French and the South Korean company, probably the American one is becoming the favorite.”

Amid the scandal, Prague authorities demanded that Russia return part of the Stromovka Park, which is occupied by the Russian embassy. As Novinky.cz writes, we are talking about half a hectare of land in Prague, where Soviet soldiers set up camp during the invasion of the Czech Republic by Warsaw Pact troops. After this, part of the park became de facto part of the embassy of first the Soviet Union and then Russia. As the mayor of the Prague 7 district, Jan Czyzinski, wrote on Twitter, the city authorities want to restore green spaces there.

An explosion at an ammunition depot in the village of Vrbetice occurred in 2014, killing two people. According to the Czech authorities, part of the contents of these warehouses belonged to the Bulgarian businessman Emelyan Gebrev, who was subsequently supposed to transfer weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. Two possible GRU employees have been put on the wanted list - Petrov and Boshirov, whom the UK accuses of poisoning the Skripals in Salisbury.

The day before, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic claimed that the government would disclose new data about the explosion, but today at the summit of EU foreign ministers, a representative of the republic denied this.
