Some time ago, Russians had to work hard to obtain a visa to Mongolia, but recently new rules have been introduced - now For travel lasting less than 30 days, a visa to Mongolia is no longer required. If the visit lasts longer, then you need to obtain a document in advance from the Mongolian Embassy in Moscow or one of its Consulates located in the cities of the Russian Federation: Ulaanbaatar, Kyzyl, Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk.
Now Russian tourists do not need a visa for 30-day trips to Mongolia.
Who needs a visa
The answer to the question of whether a visa is needed to travel to Mongolia is simple - yes, it is necessary for all categories of Russian travelers whose stay will exceed a period of 30 days. These could be tourists, business travelers, students, people coming to visit their relatives, as well as other categories of citizens. The corresponding entry document is issued on the basis of a pre-assembled package of necessary papers, which are submitted to the Mongolian Embassy in Moscow or to one of the state Consulates located in Russia.
Entering Mongolia by car
To enter Mongolia by car, the driver must have an international driving license.
To travel to Mongolia by car, a tourist takes an international license. If the trip is carried out in someone else’s car, a power of attorney signed by a notary must be drawn up for it.
You are allowed to travel within the state territory without problems (with the exception of 30 km from the borders). When driving through these zones, take special permits with you.
Crossing the border occurs without any additional problems if the tourist has all the required documents.
Visa-free entry
A visa to Mongolia for Russians in 2021 is not needed only if the plans are for a trip lasting no more than one month, and the purpose of the visit can be any. Visa-free entry is valid for all modes of transport by which the traveler enters the country. The rules of the visa-free regime are such that when crossing the border, a Russian citizen’s international passport is simply affixed with an entry stamp indicating the number of days of permitted stay in the state.
Mark in the passport about crossing the border of Mongolia
You can enter the state only if you have a valid passport, which is valid for at least another six months from the date of departure from the state.
Conditions for visiting Mongolia without a visa
When traveling to a neighboring state, Russians have the right:
- enter and leave the republic;
- take transit;
- to be on the territory of an East Asian power for a certain period of time.
Visa-free stay in Mongolia is limited to 30 days.
You cannot stay there longer than 1 month without a visa. But you can stay in the country continuously for 30 days. One more point should be taken into account. For each 180-day period, the total period of stay under a “visa-free” visa must not exceed 3 months. 180 days are counted from the date of first entry.
Types of Mongolian visas
For all other situations, when the purpose of travel requires a long stay of a Russian in Mongolia, a properly issued Mongolian visa is required, which will be a permit to enter this state. There are several types of documents; they are issued by the consular service staff of the Mongolian Embassy, depending on the actual purpose of the visit.

conclusions
Since November 2014, for trips lasting less than 30 days, a Mongolian visa is no longer required, visa legislation has been simplified in order to attract more tourists and other interested parties from Russia. Moreover, they took this step because a simplified visa regime with the border regions of the Russian Federation has been in effect for a long time.
When going on a trip, you must remember that you cannot violate the visa regime, otherwise entry may be denied in the future. After thirty days, you will need to have time to cross the border in the opposite direction and leave the country.
