Modern Slovakia is a small state with a dynamically developing economy and the lowest crime rate in Europe. Eleven years ago, it joined the ranks of the European Union member states, becoming especially attractive for those who plan to start a new, more comfortable life as a European citizen.
Having long been hidden in the shadow of the industrial Czech Republic and having spent 15 years on market reforms, today's Slovakia finds itself in 36th place in the WGEO world ranking of living standards. And even if it is not yet the “brightest” among the EU countries, it is certainly no less prosperous and comfortable for life. Moreover, Slovakia is one of a small number of European countries that not only “meet halfway” to potential immigrants, but also try to save them money and time.
Immigration policy of Slovakia
Striving to grow to the level of the “European old-timers” - Austria, Germany - Slovakia is at the stage of actively attracting investments and qualified personnel. This means that the country’s leadership welcomes and creates the necessary conditions for potential immigrants who intend to legally work for the benefit of themselves and their new homeland. Therefore, for example, the costs of processing documents for immigration to Slovakia are the lowest among all EU states, and an ID card can be obtained in just 2 months.
Of course, Slovakia’s advantages are not limited to loyal immigration laws. In addition, holders of a residence permit or citizenship of Slovakia have a number of other advantages:
- Freedom of movement within the countries of the European Community;
- The fastest and most economical legalization scheme in Europe;
- There are no requirements for the length of stay in the country to renew a residence permit;
- There are still relatively few foreigners in Slovakia;
- Low level of bureaucracy;
- Low interest rates on loans and mortgages (as throughout Europe);
- Possibility of purchasing real estate (including land) for an individual;
- European education for children (although diplomas and certificates from Ukrainian and Russian schools and universities are recognized in Slovakia).
The first thing that gives access to these benefits on a long-term basis is a residence permit in Slovakia.

Residence permit in Slovakia
A residence permit in Slovakia is issued for a period of 1 year, with the possibility of further extension. After 5 years of permanent residence in the country with the status of a residence permit, you can apply for the first permanent residence, and subsequently for citizenship.
The grounds for obtaining a residence permit, according to § 21, paragraph 1 of Law No. 404/2011 Coll. laws of Slovakia dated October 21, 2011 about the stay of foreigners may be:
- entrepreneurial activity
(business registered in the Trade Register of Slovakia); - permanent or seasonal employment
; - full-time education
; - certain types of activities
- lecturing, sports, cultural, volunteer, providing medical care, internship, etc.; - research work
; - family reunification
; - belonging to ethnic Slovaks living abroad
; - based on the EU Blue Card
(usually issued to highly qualified specialists).
Note:
purchasing real estate in Slovakia is NOT grounds for obtaining residence permit status.
Citizenship by Investment
It should be said right away that this option of immigration to Slovakia is possible, but rather ambiguous. On the one hand, the legislation allows for the issuance of a local passport to foreign investors under a simplified scheme, but on the other hand, there is no clear position regarding the amount and nature of investments. As practice shows, to submit an application you need to have at least 1 million euros. The larger the deposit amount, the higher the chances of obtaining new citizenship. In this case, the applicant is exempt from the Slovak language test and residency requirement (although he will still have to initially obtain a residence permit).
As you can see, Slovakia provides a residence permit for investors. However, as of 2021, this issue cannot be called resolved. Therefore, it is much safer to become a citizen of this European power through business immigration.
Citizenship for businessmen
Business immigration to Slovakia is one of the most reliable ways to acquire local citizenship. To open your own business and obtain a residence permit, the following conditions must be met:
- absence of infectious diseases;
- no criminal record;
- having a clear business plan;
- the availability of funds in the current account, depending on the form of organization of the enterprise: if an LLC is formed, you will need to deposit at least 19 thousand euros into a Slovak bank account, an additional 2300 must be in your personal account; when opening a private business, the amounts are smaller: 3800 in a bank, 2300 in a personal account.
Along with the application for a residence permit, the following package of documents is submitted to the department of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic:
- document confirming the place of residence in the country of immigration;
- medical certificates;
- insurance policies;
- certificates of no criminal record;
- questionnaire;
- photos;
- photocopy of international passport;
- receipt of payment of the consular fee for processing documents - 232 euros for each adult family member.
All documents must be translated into Slovak and endorsed. They are only valid for 30 days.
A residence permit in Slovakia for businessmen allows you to obtain permanent residence after 5 years, and citizenship after 8 years.

Initially, an entrepreneurial residence permit can be issued for a maximum period of 3 years. However, in practice, most often a residence permit is granted for 1.5 years. Extension of a residence permit is possible for 3 years, but for this it is necessary to fulfill certain financial tasks. Namely: the net profit after taxes from the company’s activities can provide for the businessman himself and his family. In this case, the amount of security must exceed the subsistence level (about 189 euros) by 60 times for an LLC, and 20 times for a private entrepreneur.
From this position, running a business is more profitable than participating in an LLC. However, the entrepreneur’s obligation to make monthly contributions still makes opening an LLC more attractive. Especially if there are several owners.
There is an option without registering a company - buying an existing business. The country has a lot of ready-made options for wallets of various levels, from second-hand stores to cafes in the center of the capital. First of all, you should pay attention to companies with introduced innovative technologies.
Citizenship for real estate
Real estate in Slovakia is inexpensive - mid-level housing can be purchased for up to 50 thousand euros. At the same time, any foreigner can register it personally in his name; a businessman has the right to register ownership of a company. In the second case, profit from the rental of commercial property can be recorded as profit. In addition, Slovak real estate is quite liquid, especially in Bratislava and resort towns. Therefore, there should be no problems with the sale of property. Housing prices are growing little by little, but growing every year. This guarantees receiving good dividends.
However, obtaining a residence permit in Slovakia is not issued when purchasing real estate. Slovak property is only an additional factor that contributes to the issuance and renewal of a residence permit.
In Slovakia, quite favorable, one might say, homely living conditions have been created for Russians. Partly for this reason, but mainly because of the favorable business conditions and access to the Schengen zone, many compatriots dream of going to live in this small but promising country for business. Business immigration is the most accessible and feasible way for residence permit and citizenship.
Procedure for obtaining a residence permit in Slovakia
- Providing a package of documents to the consular department of the Slovak Embassy (or the local immigration police department) in accordance with the current grounds for obtaining a residence permit;
- Reviewing the documents provided and making a decision on issuing residence permit status;
- Registration of an ID card (on average takes 1-2 months).
Of course, immigration to Slovakia is one of the best options for those who plan to achieve legalization in the EU in a relatively short time. But along with loyal immigration laws, here, as in any European country, there are a number of requirements, failure to comply with which may result in denial of residence permit status. If you want to protect yourself and your future from risks, then it is better to entrust the procedure for obtaining a residence permit in Slovakia to professionals.
